Cape Verde has one of the most unique histories I have ever come across. It was discovered by Portuguese/Genoese explorers in the 1450s, and prior to that the islands were uninhabited.
From there on the 10-island archipelago underwent an incredibly turbulent history of colonialism, seafaring, slavery, commerce, independence, and transformation. Yet the nuances of this history simply can’t be understood until you listen to the incredibly eclectic music of the country. This is what truly attracted me to the islands.
I remember first hearing about the islands when I was a Teacher Assistant for a class called the ‘Politics of Music’ at UC Berkeley. In the class, the professor spoke about the nostalgic notes of Morna’s loss and longing and how it had been influenced by and has influenced Portuguese Fado music (a form of reverse colonialism). This introduction made me want to learn more about the melancholy of Morna, the sensuality of Coladeria, the fast-paced protest music of Funana, and the rhythms of Bataque. These are just a few of the iconic musical genres of the islands, which were really underscored by the musical sensation, Cesaria Evora.
Make sure to check out this Part I of Cape Verde which takes us to the island of San Vicente to discover the country's Cultural Capital and how the musical traditions shaped the world’s imagination of this great island nation!
~ Stay Curious. And I look forward to seeing you on my next Final50 journey! ~

I’m a lawyer and entrepreneur but work remotely so it all works out!! Also I’m very careful to always get the most bang for the buck on trips so I can travel 6-7 times a year but still make it affordable :) check out some of my travel hack videos to get a better idea about traveling on a budget
