That is my Dad Willis Kirk Jr on Drums. We lost him in 2016. Did not know there was footage of him with Hamp. We knew he toured with Hamp for one year. Proud discovery.
Hi Brian. Just watched you tonight in Bellingham. You guys were awesome! Looking forward to seeing you play again sometime. Thanks for letting me know about this video with your dad. What a great way to have him be remembered for future generations.
My brother that was a big Lionel Hampton fan just passed he loved this song that's what brought me here. He use to go to to his concerts at the Million Dollar Theatre in downtown L.A. My older sister told me that when they went to the concerts that Lionel use to dance down the aisles with the girls sitting on the aisle seats. RIP my brother Al and RIP Mr. Hampton.
He was one of the best.how I miss this kind of music being a professional drummer.the good old days.will be 85 this November 2018.thank goodness fot U Tube.keep up the good music.Bill Knight...
Hampton's composition is a beautiful woman and Mercer's lyrics are her lovely garments. What a happy meeting of words and music. The song is so wonderful that it's just as spell-binding here in its instrumental form.
Wonderful description of a classic. Hampton and Louis Armstrong were the brightest personalities in jazz - with Diz and Woody Herman right behind. All gifted. Lionel led the greatest romantic band of the era.
Great players in every chair. I’m a trombonist. And the trombone section in this band is so great: Jimmy Cleveland, Benny Powell, Al Grey, and Paul Lee Higaki.
i know it's part of the show biz act, but when Hamp played a ballad he looked like a little kid at a recital who was happy he didn't make any mistakes playing the melody. then on the second chorus, he lets loose with those dazzling improvisations of his. great showman, a great musician.
I'm watching the shmenges on SCTV and they mentioned that they are musically inspired by Lionel Hampton while they are being interviewed for the last polka
Incredible mixing with view of New York at night in black and white in the 50's (I suppose). Impressed me deeply. My favorite movie beginning from all movie beginnings. Actually even this little YT movie is quite cool, too.
Fun fact...the opening descending melody was lifted by Frank Zappa and slyly inserted into the Yellow Snow suite after introducing the listener to the fur trapper character! - from the album Apostrophe ('), 1974.

Hampton could jam! I just listened to a Paris concert he did and it was amazing. Where are the Hamptons and Cal Tjader's of today?

No one beats the Benny Goodman Quartet. Four masters of their craft no one better
So smooth and mellow!

Perfect observation!
l feel goosebumps all over. l love the late Mr. Hampton.
Mesmerizing melody that Mr. Mercer wrote brilliant words to. I particularly like the orchestration in Julie London's version.

#GreatSong!
This music turns a bad day into a good one.
I’m glad he lived a long life. Too many greats died too young.
Incredible talent!
A really swell clip of this magical work by Hampton.
Long time since I heard this! So beautiful.
I get teary eyed EVERYTIME I hear this..
l love the way he puts a little swerve in the midst of all that genius .....

Part of the soundtrack of the beautiful Bertolucci's movie "The Sheltering Sky"

Great movie too
demasiado bello, lionel master of masters
How does one describe transcendence? By the "Midnight Sun" of course!
@Jim Stark Your joking of course! Good one!
So good that Frank Zappa used it for his "Don't Eat the Yellow Snow" on his "Apostrophe'" album. Check it out.
More correctly, it's the Nanook Rubs It segment.
Nanook
I have a ? Who taught Mr Hampton the vibes
Gênio!
I can't believe Zappa clipped this riff!

Brian Kay Thanks for the tip. Can't wait to hear it.
