    Last guy I watched take an engine out of a vehicle unhooked everything, hooked it up to a hoist, then said something along the lines of "now it's time to test the tensile strength of everything I forgot to disconnect" 🤣

      Thankfully I do it that a lot less than I used to..

Oh boy... the language, such anger and in public!!).

    I once had the misfortune to work for a "fly by night" bus company years ago, and what they gave me to remove an 8V71 in a GMC Buffalo was a large steel plate with 3 big swivel casters welded on the bottom. then I rolled the plate under the engine and placed three bottle jacks on the plate which I used to support the engine; then I very carefully rolled it out from the bus. That was the most dangerous thing I've ever seen. After I got the plate with the engine supported only by the bottle jacks clear of the bus, then I picked the engine up with a chain hoist. it still scares me to think about it.

    Hey Scott, nice work with what you have! I apologise if my comments on the last video seemed to be picking on your abilities. It was definitely just to comment on the difficulty of using a tractor like a forklift. As you said it can be very frustrating with a tractor that is twitchy and doesn't like to feather. Especially on a larger tractor with limited visibility of the forks! Good luck putting the other one in. Love your videos and work ethic! Keyboard warriors be damned, get another set of eyes there to make life easier and don't show us anything until the last hanger bolts are being slid in! Save you from having to answer anymore tractor questions.. 😉

    @deadtruckressurection8454 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    You are so right about the tractor, it's good for what, it's good for, but it is not a precision work machine. When you use a modern fork lift , your hand rests on the control levers, and you lift/lower, tilt and shift as an extension of your hand, not even thinking consciously about it,while creeping smoothly forward. Having loaded air freight myself you have to be good or get good since putting even a tiny dent in the skin of a plane requires it be grounded until it is cleared by a qualified airframe specialist. I always look forward to watching you work on those Detroits.

    next purchase when the BGM Bus Barn is Built: a used forklift that has the capacity to lift a fully loaded engine cradle without overloading, and that has side shift for that fine control of installing an engine into a bus.

    • @peterg.8245
      @peterg.8245 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It’s not capacity it’s the design of the hydraulic system that prevents fine control. It’s much lower pressure and the valving doesn’t allow fine control which is fine for a cost optimized farm implement. It’s like using a black and decker drill with an on/off trigger when you’re used to your variable speed Milwaukee.
      Go watch aVe’s video on overclocking his tractor to understand the difference.

    • @paulmanson253
      @paulmanson253 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There are downsides. Before wheellift towtrucks were existing,I suppose 1983 or so would be about right,the only way to tow a nonrunning bus was to install a pair of shaped I beams between front wheels and tow truck. Called rails,an air suspension bus with no air in the lines has little room underneath. Telling the guy driving a tandem wrecker his next job is rails on a bus in the rain was guaranteed to wipe the smile off his face.
      Unitised body meant trying to lift off the bumper,the usual way,would wrinkle the roof and bend the body,all too often writing the vehicle off. And yes it has happened. Send a greenhorn out,bad things happen.
      Those buses had many decades of very bright engineers fine tuning the design. Most of the time,that was advantageous.
      Heavy wrecker drivers needed to have a phlegmatic and patient personality,with problem solving abilities. And spare clothes.

    You act as if you have pulled one of these before, or two or a dozen or lots more than that. I wonder, back in the day how many a Greyhound mechanic would change at one of the big terminal cities. On construction jobs we almost never had a forklift on the job unless the bricklayers had one, after about the mid 80s there might be a backhoe with a set of forks that attached to the bucket or in place of the bucket. It was exactly as you explained it. The guy running the backhoe could place the bucket on the digger end anywhere with precision but it was meant to dig not be a forklift. We were always glad to at least have a way to unload freight but machines that are purpose built for one thing are not generally great at anything else.

    I'm surprised that at 2:00 you didn't add a note to go to 27:26 to see exactly what you are referring to, it's my favorite clip in the BGM song's music video that you made. I smile and chuckle every time I see it.

    A suggestion re forklift: Buy a used electric one that "Needs new batteries" on eBay or the like. For just installing or removing a bus engine, "borrowing" 6 of your "Battle Born" batteries from your "home" for the time it takes to do so should be no problem, I believe that the max amp draw would be well within their limit (100 amps per battery) in a 36V series/parallel (3-2) wiring if you limit yourself to half speed (block of wood under the pedal?). I recommend selling the old batteries for scrap and filling the "Battery Box" with rocks/gravel/sand, as you need the weight. As they typically weight up to a ton, scrapping them before transporting it home could be a further savings, it will also allow you to store it outdoors in the winter without the danger of the batteries freezing, cracking and leaking acid. Make a simple wood rack hanging off the back for the lithium-ion batteries for their temporary use.

    Your next investment needs to be in purchasing a pressure washer with Diesel heater.

    Used forklifts are cheaper than you think. Mustie1 bought a used Yale forklift that kept dying and the owner couldn't find anyone to fix it. Turned out to be the solid state ignition inside the distributor was bad, $100 for a new one fixed it, 4 new tires new propane tank ( no crap added to propane like gasoline has ) no brakes, refill brake master cylinder, Mustie1 spent close to $2000 but reliable as the day is long was the result. Forklift does have side shift. He paid $500 for it. It would run for a while then die, took him two days to figure it out.
    Cheers!

      James ... recently had issues with my TMC fork lift and the local dealer wanted a week to schedule it, pu / delivery fee, loaner fee, etc. Obviously the idea is to keep your busy shop going. I spent an hour fooling with it to figure it needed a crank sensor the dealer didn't have in stock so I asked for the part # then called my local Nissan car dealer who DID have it in stock! (also fits a Nissan PU truck) Yeah, i stayed late that night but got it running the same day.

    Try putting the revs against the governor on that kubota maybe you’ll find more finess out of the controls. I know what you mean they’re herky jerky! Turning the revs full tilt seemed to help with the one I run.

    I waited and watched for the best price on my 4 ton HF jack, then before all the color options came out I got mine. With 6 vehicles and a schoolie, I abuse it regularly!

    Sounds like someone was a 2T2X1. Loading aircraft with forklifts or when they are bridged with K-Loaders so much you can do it second nature.

    I agree with so many others; you have an AKK... an Awesome Knowledgeable Kelly!! She's your right hand girl. I too am blessed with being married (now 40+ years!!) to an AAM..an Absolutely Awesome Marianne. Shortly after I met her, she rebuilt her second VW engine, since then, she became a nurse, has done stained glass professionally among other fine accomplishments. Now, she works with me on rehabbing old (& not so old) houses, building stud walls, hanging & finishing sheet rock etc. I can see Kelly with her hands right in there when you build the shop.

    Grab a couple of pallet jacks from harbor freight and make a stand to go between them and the engine cradle. then you should have the control to slide the engine in there. Use the tractor to set the engine on the pallet rig. good luck.

    The hydraulics on those tractors must be designed differently. I tried to use one with the backhoe attachment and it was miserable, it was not even close to a good mini-x or true backhoe.. I kinda figured it was something going on with the tractor, still made me cringe a little, I felt for you..

    I think there should be adjust in hydraulic valve so you could feather the tractor forks. Our old tractor had same issue, and that famous "some guy" fixed that.
    Another con using tractor instead of forklift is that tractor pushes forks forward as you lift them.
