I actually kinda disagree - it's an amazing piece, and most definitely the equal of anything on the larger work. But I also think it stands alone incredibly well. It has its own feel - a rolling barrage that never lets up, just the ebbs & flows of the narrator. In some ways I think it was too 'grand' to sit amongst others, while still being an essential part of the same body of work. It definitely suits being considered on its very own terms; I can only ever really listen to it over & over again - once is rarely enough; I'd have to be really pressed for time to not do so! So many of her B-sides are like that in different ways, though I guess less distinctly so on more diverse albums. Not that LES is homogenous by any means.
Her B- sides are better than most artists best songs. Some of my favorites from her are B-sides- Long Time Coming, Lying In The Sun, Maniac, One Time Too Many, Sweeter Than Anything, Rebecca,Kick It To The Ground, The Faster I Breathe, The Further I Go, Goodnight, Naked Cousin. Amazing- best artist around today.
oh thank you for reminding me about "Sweeter Than Anything", another one that I just couldn't believe how good it was. It's possibly the only one that could distract me from just repeating this over & over again!
Repeated listenings suggest that this is just as brilliant as everything on the album - just as is 'The Nightingale'. What a shame they weren't on the album...
Shadows lengthening Ninety-five steps I'm taking With every step I'm longing For the luck to keep on living The drum calls me back again To my senses, filled with shame Oh, that this night Would never end And on No Man's Land The sun would not rise again There was laughing, and I could not laugh There was singing, and I could not sing The big guns called me back again The big guns called me back again The big guns called me back again I hear voices sing I hear the guns begin Far off, and far away I hear the guns again I hear the guns again I hear the guns again
Love this song and The Nightingale. Agree with those before me who have said they both should be album songs. Let England shake is an amazing compilation. She just can't write a b-side ;-) She was just in Fremantle WA and her show was amazing.
love this track! I only heard it first last night at the end of the full album of Let England Shake. i have the album but it's not on my copy. Thanks for posting, i love this song!
I don`t know what a big gun is, per se. But I don`t blame them for calling her back again, whatever they are. If melodicism were a sport for some reason, like figure skating somehow is, she would certainly have the most points. All of the points. It`s scientific.
Perhaps my favourite song from HER !!!!!!!!
Same!
Absolutely Beautiful - should've been included on the album.
Yeah the same is my thought
It's on Spotify with the rest of the album.

Let's not forget Sweeter than Anything......one of my favorite songs by her!
My third favourite song of all time.
Why am I crying?

such a good song. PJ is a master.
gives me goosebumps...as does the whole album...surreal
Shadows lengthening
Ninety-five steps I'm taking
With every step I'm longing
For the luck to keep on living
The drum calls me back again
To my senses, filled with shame
Oh, that this night
Would never end
And on No Man's Land
The sun would not rise again
There was laughing, and
I could not laugh
There was singing, and
I could not sing
The big guns called me back again
The big guns called me back again
The big guns called me back again
I hear voices sing
I hear the guns begin
Far off, and far away
I hear the guns again
I hear the guns again
I hear the guns again

none of her songs should be hidden, they are all very good

Wow her voice in this song
thank you hellspawn, the album itself was my favorite album of the year, a masterpiece, and this song is terrific.
wow...brilliant
a great evocative song!!!
Why was this not put on the her latest album?? As if this song would throw the central theme of album off. It's amazing!
@1roback you are so right.... heard it live and it was amazing
the drum calls me back, again. until my senses filled with shame

Should never have been a B Side
Yeah! In my opinion this song should be on album instead of "England"
This track left me shell shocked!
