    The tapwater discussion reminded me that if you're trying to raise bug-eating plants like Venus flytraps, you really do need to find a water source without any excess nitrogen in it. Most tapwater has too much nitrogen for them and they will die! So while many many plants will be happy on tapwater, it always helps to check the specs for the plant you're growing and the water you're using.

    I was always the typical outdoor gardener who couldn’t keep anything inside of my house alive, however, when my now husband proposed & we signed a lease for an apartment (with no balcony), I knew something had to change. It really is two different worlds and different mindsets, but I’m learning that house plants need indirect light, and consistent conditions. Otherwise, I just leave them alone! I don’t need to baby them like I do my veggie garden back at my parents house. Thanks for the video Kevin!! There were definitely some helpful tips in here!

    I have a plant at work that the leaves kept yellowing and browning, used Kevin's blog site with the macro and micro nutrients and wrote down everything that could have been the cause. Ended up just grabbing some charcoal from my fire pit, crushed it up, and buried it just below the surface. Some of the leaves are still a bit yellow, but they aren't yellow and veiny like it was a few weeks ago.

    I have an indoor plant biz at various offices such as Palomar system offices. I’ve kept plants alive for 20 years. There are only 7-8 types I use. Every week someone says what is that you’re using to check the plants? I have plants at home that look like this and they describe it with their hands, no name. Or you’ll have to come to my house and take care of my plants. I keep them clean I don’t overwater and grow some at home for replacements.

    Yeah, my plants are definitely not harming anybody or anything. I've got a handful of plants that have been with me for decades and 90% of the others I've acquired as cuttings from private people. I get plants to keep, not as decoration.
    However, there are folk that buy plants as decor and get rid of them once they no longer fit their "aesthetic" or they get bored of them. My peace lily was one of the plants bought from IKEA as decor, then ended up in the bio trash, because the owner bought another plant instead (she told me so herself). I pulled it out of the trash and have had it ever since (11 or 12 years now). It's grown ginormous and is currently flowering :)

    The tap water that we have in my city has caused problems for my plants even if it doesn't outright kill them. Aging the water helps.
    The houseplants that I have all have to share the same space in the kitchen. While they do not set on a shelf right next to the kitchen window, the window faces east. At first they protested; but, they have adapted. When we lived where the kitchen window faced north, the plants did really well. We do not have a north facing window any longer.
    I never really thought it was the music that the plants liked; but, mine seemed to thrive when Bill Haley and the Comets, Chuck Berry, and Little Richard were playing in the background. If you think about how a deaf person can still enjoy music through the beat and vibrations created when the music is played, I just figured that the vibrations caused by music was doing something for the plants.

    When it comes to tap water it also depends on your particular situation. If you live off of well water, that's a completely different kind of "tap water" than what you'd get from a city water treatment plant. Cities usually put things like Fluoride in which I can't imagine would be great for growing plants. It may not hurt the plant itself, but if it's something that fruits and that you expect to consume, that's something to consider.

    For your tip #3 I think you are partially wrong and partially correct. If you live where dew often collects in the morning you'll notice some plants are adapted to collect the dew and some aren't, there's a reason the one's who collect it do it. It's because they can absorb small amounts of the water from their leaves and feed off the minerals boosting their growth. The dew collecting plants will like it if you mist them in the morning as it's something they've adapted their dna to take advantage of, the other plants won't care as they have adapted differently.

    Bottom vs top watering. Top watering gets rid of old nutrients due to the fresh water consisting of both positive and negative charges from the hydrogen and oxygen and is easily able to attract the ions in the soil and rid them through runoff, increasing cation exchange and increased root efficiency. Bottom watering doesn't get rid of much and not having runoff lowers cec.

  • @orchidquest
    @orchidquest ปีที่แล้ว

    Watering indoor plants entirely depends on whether the plant is terrestrial or epiphetic. Orchids, for example, shouldn't get water on their leaves--it can cause leaf rot, crown rot, and stem rot. There isn't enough air circulation in a home to dry the leaves, and we grow them upright, but in nature, they grow off the side of trees. For terrestrial plants, though, I don't worry so much about water on the leaves, especially with an RO system.

    Watering wise I douse my plants in the bathtub with the shower hose, and then leave them with the plug in for 15 minutes, cleans them and makes sure they get a thorough watering, then I put the fan on to help the leaves dry off and they end up clean of dust from the shower hose

    I don't have great light in my apartment, so that narrows what I can grow. The other issue is I'm trying to avoid plants that are toxic to cats. I had tons of pathos, but let them all go in my last move because I was always worried that I wasn't keeping them away from my cats. I would love to try a monstrous, but they are toxic. In the apartment I am now, I have very little options for good light that are not also accessible to my cats.

      I purchased an LED Light Fixture so I could grow food in my closet(Tomatoes, PEppers, Cucumbers, Cilantro, etc). I knew of LED Technology a number of years ago(2016ish) when I was into Aquariums, and knew that one of the companies was getting into Horticulture, but seeing all the choices now, from various companies, is insane! My LED Fixture is about 360W Max power and they say it should cover a 5x3 space at 16". There are also "Grow Tents" you can buy where you can put everything into a tent and just put the tent into a corner of your house. The reason tents are good, is because the LED Lights are EXTREMELY bright.
      Best of luck to you!

I know that with some small investment I'll be able to have some return with food, even though it might take awhile, so it all depends if you are able to invest in something. @xBearhug3 ปีที่แล้ว

      seconding what Stefani said! Food grade diatomaceous earth on the top layer of soil, sticky traps, and bottom watering until the gnats are gone works best. Gnat larvae love moisture, so making sure you don't top water ensures they don't have a great environment to develop. The diatomaceous earth will kill any gnats crawling out of the soil or landing to lay eggs.

    I have a small home. I am disabled and my husband is lazy. I have a small home and small front and backyard. They are both a completely void of plants, lawn and a blank canvas. My goal has been to have some planter boxes for my disabilities (raised) but I don't even know where to start? Get most of your supplies from 2nd hand stores and dollar stores. Build your own raised gardens out of plastic chairs and plastic totes or use 5 gal buckets.

    • @rosey_ie
      @rosey_ie ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jennifer! I’m disabled too, but thankfully my husband isn’t lazy 🤭 What I would suggest is to have a look at Facebook marketplace for 2nd-hand plastic flower pots/planters, and (if you can’t use the car) ask your husband to at least pick them up for you. Then you will need to order some appropriate compost for your pots/planters. An all-purpose compost is what you want - you don’t want to be growing anything that is going to need special treatment! 😅 Then I would recommend buying some herbs in plant form to plant into your pots/planters - they are really inexpensive plants, and you can buy them as small plants from lots of grocery stores. I would go for the ones that will want to grow like wildfire, like mint, so they aren’t labour intensive for you. Rosemary is another good one. They are also useful when cooking meals, and of course, they smell delicious 😍 And if you’re going to be putting the plants at a bit of a height so you can more easily manage them, you’ll really get the benefit of the scent!
      If you’d like to then think about what type of plants you’re looking to grow that’d be a great next step. For example, are you looking to grow flowers do you think? Or edibles? If it were me, I’d buy a pack of wildfire seeds to plant if I wanted some very easy care flowers; or I’d look for a packet of a bush-form tomato plant if I wanted to grow edibles.
      Next, you’ll want to get something you can lay the pots/planters on so that you can easily get at them, so again I’d suggest looking on Facebook marketplace or similar to see if you can find any tables, a sort that will suit your garden and your climate. If it’s very dry, maybe a 2nd-hand ikea table would be ok; if it’s not, a 2nd-hand garden table that’s made out of plastic perhaps. Put your potted plants on the tables then so you can access them more easily.
      Oh one last plant recommendation - lavender is a very pretty plant that’s very inexpensive and very easily grown. It’s also widely available and has lovely flowers as well as a lovely scent for you to enjoy.
      Hope that helps! 💐

      Why do you call your Husband "Lazy?" Because he doesn't share the same passion as you for gardening and doesn't want to help you?
      IF you just want to start... Just start, what else is there? Go online and start researching how to grow what you want to grow. Watch YT Vids, visit blogs, etc. You are already on this video, so you already are 1 step in the right direction, great! I am brand new to this, I just researched certain things such as potting soil mix, what sort of container I should use, etc, and now I have a few beautiful plants including a nice little Tomato Plant that is flowering already. So happy!
      I personally got Fabric Grow Bags from "Smart Pots" but there are many choices in pots. I put together my own soil from amendments, which is a more advanced topic so I wouldn't recommend that to new growers. There are many soil mixes out there, and it depends if you want to be organic or not. Many people just use straight miracle gro and cal it a day, others look for Organic mixes such as "Fox Farm(which has a number of soil mix choices)" or other brands to use because they are better quality and have better items in the mix.
      Depending if you are growing indoors(like me) or outdoors you will have different needs, but you will need to make sure the plants are moist, and that seedlings aren't watered to much, just watch videos on the different stages of plant growth and try to learn about plnts and understand plants. Then there are leaf coloration issues that signify a deficiency in the plant.
      Good luck.

      Here’s a challenge: Build a small garden section using only dollar store containers! I’ve built a large amount of stackable plants and bag gardens from dollar store stuff. I can’t recommend the soil they sell (cheap soil BAD!), but the containers are the same as Home Despot or Lowers, and a LOT cheaper. The Army broke my body, but gardening is peaceful and worth the labor of love. Want your husband involved? Give him something he likes to eat as a plant- but DONT “gift” it as a “live fern”, aka “if this dies you don’t care about me.” Get him a small pepper plant that grows upside down, and tell him he’s free to eat ‘em! Or a hard-to-kill berry bush in a pot. My wife doesn’t like gardening, but she knows it makes me happy and out salads are to die for, so I garden while she does something else! Good on you for laughing and loving together! Despite the pain of broken bodies worthy of 80-yr-old stunt performers (and being half that!), we recognize the delight of each other. Good for you both!

    Just watering from the top is not the same as having a plant have time to soak from the bottom. This specially if the soil is very dried out. If the soil is very dried out, lets say you bought it from the store and it has been neglected, just let it sit in the water.. for few hours or overnight. Think of it, taking a shower when you are very dirty, 5 minutes.. no you will not get to all the crevices... or having time to soak up in a tub.. lets say a skunk sprayed you, you will want to soak up to get rid of the smell. Same thing for very dry plant soil. pouring water on very dry plant.. will not give that soil time to soak up water, it will just go through it.

      For me it's watering cactus in the winter. I usually have so much time between waterings due to them being largely dormant, that the soil can become hydrophobic and bottom watering will restore the soil and prevent it from running through. The rest of the plants/year ever I only top water.

    Houseplants bought from retailers are bad for the environment that's just fact. Anything massed produced has its toll on the environment and buying a houseplant doesn't give anything back to the environment. Buying soil, buying pots, buying fertilizer all has its toll. I'd find it pretty tough to grow houseplants without using any outsourced materials and I'm sure pretty much no one is going full scratch on growing. So houseplants in general should be considered bad for the environment, but it's marginal. Pretty much the same level as buying groceries and no one is up in arms over the effect groceries have on the environment.
