    I own one of these to this day. The first guitar I ever bought and its been through the ringer. I own several guitars now (70's SG, USA Tele & Explorer, Gretsch) and this Strat is still a useful part of the arsenal. Very early on I replaced the bridge pickup with a SD HotRail and added some paper between the trem springs. I played through a Marshall Jc900 mostly and I think its a cool unique tone. I have not had noticeable problems with tuning when I use it the whammy. Also, I like that the trem bar stops at the output jack and its easy to catch. The wide neck is cool too. All the naysayers can hate on it from afar because it's the thing to do but if they spent time with it and actually played it, turned a few knobs, they'd find something they like about it I'm sure. I should mention too that most are hearing the guitar through tiny little computer or phone speakers. Its different face to speaker and finger too fretboard. Plus... its cool that its a Strat but not a Strat. Remember when every one hated on Kay's and "Sears" but now they are hip as shit? Maybe the old "Smith Era" will have its day in the sun beyond Bryan Adams "Run to You" video? You never can tell. I just thought someone should defend this underdog. Thanks for your time and thanks for the vid!

    My theory on these guitars was that all the things that were done differently (output jack, trem) were done to reduce routing/assembly time. On this guitar, everything can be loaded from the front, the pickguard can be completely assembled/tested before assembly, and the trem can be dropped in before the pickguard. It doesn't make a better guitar, but it sure is a lot faster to assemble. I don't think many were sold though.

    I own this guitar and I love it. The master tone offers a cool tone on the bridge pickup which you can’t get on a traditional Stratocaster (one tone is for the middle and the other for the neck in most cases). Also the neck is a nice shape (I think it’s a D shape neck, very thin). Mine sounds great to my ears despite all the cost cutting Fender did but it’s all personal preference. If you see one I would give it a try.

    I had an 83’ gold elite strat that was a beautiful transparent green paint job. Same trem system but it had like a micro tune but thingy. Pain in the ass to change strings if you took them all off at the same time. Also push/push for each pickup. Some weird lace sensor pickups.

    Hi Mark and Jen, it’s me George from Santa Barbara. I love my McGuire Blackie Strat Mark set me up with at Norm’s! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I’ll thank you again when I see you. I thank Mark McGuire also for telling me about it! Can you broker for me it’s twin sister? I’ll call you and ask? I was playing it jammy style when I saw this Straturday vid. My luthier Hans Pukke here in SB has a 2-knob DS Strat that is his favorite! And he has had his share of Strats. He will never sell his! He did change the pickups to Lollar’s though. I have 2 early 82 Dan Smith Strats with red bobbins 3 knob Strats. A super heavy??? Black/rosewood and a Sienna burst/rosewood 7.5lb. Necks are thin at the nut for sure! Not my favorite profile. Very very nice guitars! Happy Birthday little Nico! My boys favorite neighbor who is our extended 4th boy is Nico! Nico’s are the best!

      Yeah, I'm super late to the party but I don't think those are the original pu's I have a two knob and the pick ups are super epic. Low output compared to all my other strat pu's. I have lace sensor, Fat 60's, (which are also rare and exceptional), texas specials, Klien Jazzy Cats and some Squire vintage vibe. The two knob's sound nothing like the ones in the vid. Those are awful.

    I have this exact Stratocaster WITH the whammy bar! The case in the video isn't original to the guitar though. That's a 1990s molded case, the 1983 Stratocasters came with a much nicer black case. The X1 pickups are stunningly great on these guitars, really glassy-sounding with a slightly increased output compared to 1970s pickups. Of all the Fender guitars I've owned this is the only one where I kept the stock pickups.

    • @jakubhap7728
      @jakubhap7728 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I also have this guitar in a sienna sunburst finish. But as far as I know, the original pickups in this model is not the famous X1. I think the X1s were put into earlier "Dan Smith" models, and the guitar in the movie is a "two knob" model.

    • @GilgaFrank
      @GilgaFrank วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@jakubhap7728 Thanks for the correction, I was always under the impression these had X1 pickups. And yes, these are categorically NOT Dan Smith Stratocasters despite being described that way in most eBay and Reverb sales pitches.

    I have one of these. I have many other guitars but this is still my main axe, the one I learned on, and it's like my right arm. Still performing and recording with it to this day. It's been highly modified over the years; pickups on it now are DiMarzio Tone Zone in the bridge, DiMarzio Cruisers in middle and neck and they sound great. (I've used EMG's, Hot Rails, and Lace Sensors in the past, but the DiMarzios sound the best to my ears.) Due to odd string spacing at the B & High E, I was unable to use traditional pole piece pickups due to audible volume loss on those strings, thus the rail-type pickups. It's also true the tremolo bars are hard to find; I lost mine ages ago and there are NO replacements by Fender or 3rd parties, which is fine because it didn't stay in tune anyway. Works way better as a stop-tail. There are also no bridge saddle replacements for this bridge! I had one side of the American Standard bridge saddles machined off to accommodate the drop-in string-loader when I replaced the old saddles. This guitar is definitely an odd duck, but the neck feels great and the body is very resonant. I replaced the frets a few years ago and it felt like a whole new guitar. I'll never part with mine.

    Not a big fan of Dan Smith era Fenders, but this one sounds pretty cool. Doing away with the recessed input jack and the rear tremolo cavity makes it not really a Strat.

    Its not a "Dan Smith" Stratocaster ...this is the "Smith-era" Stratocaster which is something COMPLETELY different! Dan Smith Strat = desired and sought after. But the 2-knob version (like shown here) is one of the least ever wanted Strats of all time! Check your research! It was considered the Cheapocaster!

    That is an output jack. It outputs signal to the amp which indeed has an input

    I find it funny how many people call the “output” jack an input jack. There is no input jack on a guitar. A guitar jack is “output” only.
    Happy late birthday Mark. I am a Strat fan, but this one I would pass on.
    Cheers !!!

      You can afford a Mexican Fender with near (or sometimes surpassing) the quality of an American Fender.

      Anthony Kueber I was mostly being sarcastic. Most of the gotd guitars are super rare and expensive but this one isn’t as desirable. And it’s also one I’m not particularly fond of .
