    This video seriously changed my life! I’m a teacher that hates getting up at 5am to do my hair and I hate sleeping in the plop with a wet head. I just tried this last night and woke up to perfect hair that was dry!!! I had so much free time this morning which I NEVER have. So thank you so much!!!!

      I have the same curl type and i just started my CG journey. Do you have any advice? my curls currently look stringy and messy. I can tell it hasn't found its curl pattern yet.

    • @EvaToad
      @EvaToad 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Same! My waves definitely are on the stringy side right now, although I’m amazed at how much more curl is there when I use the right techniques. Trying to figure out how to create softer, larger curl/wave clumps now.

    Of all the curly hair people I follow, you're the most helpful for me, and THIS video was a life changer for me. It's now my routine on washday to do it at night, squish in LA Looks gel and spread my hair up on my silk pillowcase. In the morning I have the best, luscious curls I've ever gotten by any other method. I just wanted to thank you for this video especially. My results were amazing. Thank you.

      Me too! Letting my hair drape over my satin pillow case and finish drying has saved me.

    I always wash my hair at night and scrunch out in the morning. There's just no way I'd have time for a whole hair wash routine before work - I'm up at 5.30am as it is! ;)

      Yea me too, 5:30 AM for an 11 hr work day (health-care) and this method works so great for me. I just clip up the front-sides with a small clip so it's out of my way when I see patients and I have great hair all day without spending way too much time on my hair!

    Thank you for this video. I’m one week in on my curly girl journey and I still have so much to learn. As a working mom of 3 kids, I don’t have much time to get ready in the morning and I am definitely going to try this because if I can wash and style my hair the night before, it’ll save me so much time! Thank you once again

    This is how i actually refresh my hair at the moment, i don't like washing my hair in the morning because i take a lot time washing and styling my hair it takes me 20 minutes to wash and style my hair and the drying takes 1 and half hour since i only airdry (cause i haven't bought a diffuser yet). I got great defined waves the next morning, so dar this is the most effective way that i can do avoid messy refresh waves

  • @prayerangel1
    @prayerangel1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I do the same thing! I find my curls have more volume when they finish drying while I sleep, especially since I sleep on my stomach. They don't get much pillow contact, but just enough to work out the crunch. Excellent video and it's a relief to see someone else not using the pineapple...it seems to pull out what little curl I have, so I don't use it.

  • @AlishaHerbiederbie
    @AlishaHerbiederbie 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This is so helpful for me! I've been struggling so much with finding a way to sleep with my curls and this works for me. Pineappling/Medusa clipping doesn't stay in place because I move so much in my sleep, but at least with this method I don't have to worry.

  • @passionpersian
    @passionpersian 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I’m genuinely shocked your hair turned out perfectly after sleeping on it loosely. I did not expect that at all. I’m still nervous to do this myself, but I’m going to try this anyway to see how it works for me. I have waist-length hair and the only products I have are gel and hair milk that I use after shower, so fingers crossed!
    I always do a pineapple bun and wrap my hair AND sleep on a satin pillowcase too, so I’m terrified. LOL

    Speaking as a new curly (wavy) girl who doesn't like to spend a lot of time getting ready, I SOOOO appreciate your efforts (especially before coffee!). I'm learning a lot from your videos and my shopping list keeps growing. lol. I'll definitely be trying this method though as I like to take baths at night, so this should fit well into my new routine as I figure out what the heck that is :-) I hope school continues to go well.

    I wish I could sleep like a Disney princess like you but it’s impossible. I sleep in the plop with an oversized t shirt towel by Hair Repear. I found a video from The Clean Curl called “Sleeping in the Plop” that demonstrates how to wrap the towel. It has changed my life and my curls for the better. I highly recommend all curlies watch it.
    I love all your videos and have been a fan girl for a while now. Thanks for doing all the footwork and product experimenting for me. I trust the recommendations and your techniques are so very helpful.

  • @amratis
    @amratis 6 ปีที่แล้ว +34

    I don’t get how you put so much product on your hair but it doesn’t just go really greasy?? My hair is also fine and about 2b/2c wavy and if I put five products on it it just dies and goes straight as hell? I just don’t understand how you get that result with SO much product on the hair?

    • @jessicabowdoin6856
      @jessicabowdoin6856 6 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Amy Hogger You have to apply products to soaking wet hair to dilute them and then scrunch with a microfiber towel to absorb the excess product and water. I also recommend plopping for 10 minutes or so too. I didn't believe it either but it does work.

    • @AnaGarcia-wk1in
      @AnaGarcia-wk1in 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      There's a chance you're low porosity, so your hair doesn't absorb much, but what it gets stays in. You don't need as much product, it's better if you don't use much.

    • @empressvee
      @empressvee 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yeah, I know what you mean. I do all this, sleep with my hair in a plop, the next day it looks amazing!. It's the day after that's the problem. I'm experimenting with different ways to deal with this on the weekend. I mean, do I get it wet again and diffuse? I actually had straight hair ALL MY LIFE and then it just turned curly on me. The time and money I've spent on my hair the last few years is ridiculous. But I kind of love my curls when they're perfect so..........

    • @cathismith2624
      @cathismith2624 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Do you mean that you sleep with it in a plop while it's still wet? After using a microfiber towel? I'm trying to work out what works best for me, but I seem to have a lot of frizz no matter what I do......

      @alysonlupo  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're so welcome! I hope it works for you. I have to do a little more refreshing in the morning with this routine now that my hair is shorter (mostly from sleeping on it--the back gets crazy and flat), but it's still a major time saver on my end.

    You were the first curly girl I found last summer when I decided to try the CGM. I'm a fellow wavy. And yet, I'm now circling back to this video because I'm going to try this tonight. I hate trying to squeeze in doing my hair every morning before work - half the time it looks like poo anyway. But I'm hoping sleeping in the crunch is the answer I've been looking for!

    Great video. I love your curls & waves!
    You use so many products though that it is intimidating! If you had to pick one to splurge on, which would it be?

    • @alysonlupo
      @alysonlupo  7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Well, they each have a very important job. It's rare to find one product that does it all. Cream keeps the frizz at bay in summer temps and helps my waves 'clump' better; the Deva foam enhances my curl tremendously; the Ouidad gel also helps with clumping and frizz control in summer temps, as well as definition and shine; and the Biosilk Rock Hard Gelee (BRHG) gives me the crunchy cast I really need to 'set' my waves. So, it really depends on what your hair needs. I know Deva just recently changed their foam formulation, so I can't recommend that one yet. Knowing how important a crunchy cast is to me, I would recommend splurging on the BRHG. You could also try Got2Be Glued gel in its place, which you can find for a few dollars at Target or CVS. I live by the crunch! :)

I'm still confused, but better. Thanks for the video and for showing us how you do it. the overnight techniques are something I could use. Do you use a satin pillowcase?

  • @AthenaPadilla
    @AthenaPadilla 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I give more attention to the hair just up from the back of my neck. The way you are doing it is keeping the first several inches underneath flat. And sleeping by pulling it up behind your head also makes the underneath layers flat. I think this works for you because your hair is long, but it wouldn't work for shorter hair. Looks beautiful though! ;)

    I have type 2a with 2b strands underneath. My hair refuses to look wavy after sleeping. My hair is very short , so I can't pineapple it or really put it up at all. And I'm a messy sleeper so baby pineapples fall out. If I try to put it up, it just bends in weird directions and looks all messy. I've found products that work for me and make it look nice on wasg day. But by the next morning it's frizzy and messy. I've tried the silk case, doesn't do much cuz I move around soo much. And I've tried the t-shirt but it just kind of bends ny hair in weird directions. Ugh my hair. It's so hard to work with. I've come to an annoying conclusion. If I can't figure out what to do with it, I may go back to straightening it every day...

      Day 2, I usually spritz my hair with a little moisture, scrunch it, and plop it in a t-shirt while I take a shower. Give it some time to cool off and then take off the t-shirt...and that often refreshes the curl. Maybe worth trying?

  • @CLE-EA

    I tried this the other day and woke up with perfect curls. Personally I think the best reason it worked is because I was not awake to eff up my curls. My issue has always been to keep messing with them and TOUCHING my hair when I should leave well enough alone. I woke up with the best curls. Tonight is going to be my second time to see if it was just a fluke. Lol 😂

    Yay, I wanna try this method. My hair is too short for a pineapple and I'm not sure I'd love the look or feel of medusa clips or a wrap/scarf at night. Now to figure out if any vegan pillowcase material can work as well as silk.

    Omg your kids are adorable!!! Ok so I get the whole overnight routine which I hope works out for me because I shower at night because I get up so early. However, my question is what do you do the following night after the wash. Do you do the same routine except not wash your hair? Do you wet it or just condition it? I have low porosity hair course dense hair. I just recently discovered my hair even did this. I have straightened it with blow dryer my whole life. Thank you great videos. Also how do you discover new products you seem to stick with a couple same products but not all.

    • @alysonlupo
      @alysonlupo  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! Thank you so much!! I do a pineapple of sorts. When it's longer, I do the pineapple style I demo in one of my videos, and on shorter hair I do a 'Medusa clipping' style pineapple as demo'ed by my friend FitKat Style on her channel. Works great! I usually wash again the following night, so my 'sleep in the crunch hair' is slept on twice before washing again. Glad this one has been helpful to you!

    Awesome video! I'm about to start the curly girl method soon so this video helped a lot! Also, how do you style your hair depending on the weather? This Texas humidity makes my curls frizz all the time and I can't seem to find my way around it :(

    • @alysonlupo
      @alysonlupo  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Frizz is so tricky because it has so many potential causes. Yes, humidity is definitely one of those. But well-hydrated hair will frizz a lot less than hair that's still thirsty. So be sure you're scrunching and pumping water in your hair at every step possible, starting with when you're rinsing out some/all of your conditioner in the shower--this is called squish to condish. Also since you're just starting CG, try to deep condition once a week if you can, as your hair will likely be a bit dehydrated. It takes some time, so be patient. :) I also find that styling at night and leaving the gel cast in all night makes a big difference for me. The longer I can leave the cast in, the better my hair behaves for longer. Hope that helps!

    Hello from San Diego! I love your channel and am so thankful to have found you! I often wash and go and try to stay away from heat and diffusing, do you happen to have an air day routine that you can share with us? Cheers and gratitude! ❤️

    • @alysonlupo
      @alysonlupo  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nah, I'm not an air dryer. I lose SO much volume that way. But you can always clip your roots and go about your day until it's dry. That's what I WOULD do, but I like to have good hair. LOL Wish air drying worked for me!

    Thank you for this! I have hair similar to yours and am trying to get back into a curly routine after several years of drying my hair straight. I feel like I'm going through a learning curve all over again since my hair is much drier than it used to be (and it seems curlier somehow...) I'm finding much better results by letting my hair set overnight instead of rushing through the morning with wet hair (one word: toddler) 😊

  • @maggiewendt9577
    @maggiewendt9577 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Also please tell me the order of products for styling that’s really my difficulty and the refreshing is my very difficult for me as well. You Co-Wash then squish to condish then you put a curl enhancer then gel, then dry plop, then you added more gel this time. I have the curly girl handbook and it’s basically gel after washing. The refresh part of the book is not helpful. I have attempted the lavender spray with essential oil and water Although it does not work well in my hair makes it frizzy. Thanks again.

    • @alysonlupo
      @alysonlupo  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yep, that's the order I do it all in typically. In summer, I use a cream before my enhancer for extra frizz control. And like you, spraying water on my hair to refresh makes it SO frizzy. I have a refresh demo you can watch, which is almost identical to the way I do it now. The Raw Curls anti-frizz spray is absolutely key to my refresh. I've found absolutely nothing to replace it!

    Do you have any suggestions for people who workout in the morning? I feel it'll all just get messed up with a hair tie when working out. And I don't have time in the mornings for a full dry. Also do you have a substitute for the Deva Curl products? I keep seeing from the CGM reddit they make you lose hair.

    Awesome video, I haven't tried washing at night yet, 3 weeks into the curly girl method and still having issues with straight pieces and halo frizz in the crown. Could this routine work with fine wavy shoulder length blonde hair? I tend to have problems with hair too soft and lacking curl definition, and products feeling too heavy. Also, with shorter hair and being a side sleeper, wld you recommend this overnight routine, do I have enough length in my hair to do it? Any advice? Thanks!

    • @alysonlupo
      @alysonlupo  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You'll never know until you try it. And you may find you have to make some modifications since your hair is shorter--like sleeping with a buff, or on a satin/silk pillowcase, or even with your hair in a pineapple after you've dried it. For me, loose on the pillow is part of the 'magic.' But everyone's hair is different. And I'm a hardcore side sleeper, so I say go for it. You might have to spray down some pieces in the morning. Re your straight pieces and halo frizz: You're only 3 weeks in; it takes time for those things to resolve themselves. That said, everyone has different curl patterns on their head, especially wavies, so those straight pieces might get some bend to them later on, you'll see. Halo frizz could be caused by a few things: The need to clarify your hair with a sulfate shampoo if you have buildup (I have to do this monthly), new growth coming in (which is pretty common after starting CG), or just your hair adjusting to this new routine after possibly being coated with silicones or being straightened for so long. Those curl clumps are just trying to find each other!

    How did or do you sleep with shorter hair for 2nd day after sleeping in the crunch? I can’t do a pineapple with my shoulder length hair and satin caps make it flat and smooshed. Even with the satin pillowcase my hair is an absolute mess when I wake up. Thanks for your great videos!

    How many days do you get on that night time routine?

    • @alysonlupo
      @alysonlupo  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I just recently chopped 8" off my hair (video coming!) and have easily been getting great days 3 and 4, wearing it down, using this routine! I found my longer hair much harder to maintain, but I always got 2 great days with this routine, which I called day 1.5 (the day after washing at night) and day 2.5. So I'd either wash that night or wear it up the third day. Does that make sense?

  • @thereisa

    So you don't have to rinse any of that? You go from putting all the product in, to the t-shirt, add the gel, and sleep? And do you do this every night? O_O

    Okay, I have a question, how long should I wait to scrunch out the crunch if I am not sleeping in the crunch? I usually do the sleeping in the crunch thing, but when use the products with the harder caste, I don't know how long to leave the crunch in for if I am getting ready in the morning. I don't like going to work with crunchy hair.

    Hi, I have a question, I bought the tube of biosilk rock hard gel, the 2nd ingredient listed is ALCOHOL, but on Ulta.com, Naturallycurly.com etc, alcohol is not listed at all. Do you find this gel drying? Do you suppose with the new silver tube they changed the ingredients to now include alcohol, that would be disappointing. Was just curious if you had the same ingredients listed on yours. Thanks!!
