  • Joseph's Summer 2018 trip: Travelling URUGUAY || Montevideo!
    In this episode I head to the beautiful city of Montevideo, Uruguay! I'll spend about four to five days there and hit up all the sights: the centro, the downtown area and more.
    I'll travel through the US to Los Angeles, onto Lima, Peru, Santiago, Chile and probably Uruguay, Brazil and Colombia. Wahoo!

      That's so awesome. I am so pumped that this brought back memories for you. I always wondered if my videos would actually matter, but I find more and more that some people really appreciate. Thank you!

    Nice video! I'm from Uruguay, and you walked almost in front of where I'm living right now, so seeing all these day to day places from your perspective was kinda weird haha. I agree with another commenter that your filming may need some improvement (hope you don't mind me telling you that), but I still liked it. It gave the video like another touch, another "something" that I really enjoyed.
    Although, another thing: in the first bit of the video, with the guys riding a horse-powered cart (Idk if "cart" is the correct name to call the vehicle, I used google translate for the word), you say it's "awesome" and whatnot, but it is actually a pretty sad sight, cause they're people who live in the most absolute poverty, who rely in using those horses to search through the trash and trying to salvage what they can to recycle to make a living, and many times those horses are subject of animal abuse (often ending in their death), so it's a whole social issue, too complex to summarize in a youtube comment (and also, I'm not the most knowledgeable person in the topic). I know you were just a tourist and you didn't have to be aware of the situtation and all that, but seeing them made me want to comment about the subject.
    Anyway, I know this is a 2 year old video, but I hope you spent a great time in my little country. It's always nice seeing tourists enjoying it :)

      I completely agree with you Alfonso! In retrospect it is a sad image of poverty in Montevideo. I had those same thoughts myself as I re-watched after publishing. Thank you for watching, and it brings me happiness that many Uruguayans have followed along my videos. Uruguay is one of my favourite countries - there is nothing like it.

    Walking is the best way to get to know a city. I first visited Montevideo when I was 18 yrs old and would walk around for hours on end. The most I did was 7hrs of non stop walking in one day. I gave The Rambla a go, which apparently is the longest promenade in the world at over 22 kms, but at some point had to head back inland.
    Hope to go back some day. Thanks for the vid. Cheers from downunder.

    Awesome video! Just to mention that plate you saw commemorates the proclamation of independence of Slovenia in 1991, no bunch of Slovenes relocating :)

      But why did people in Uruguay wish to commemorate this event? There must be a connection

    • @Alfonso162008
      @Alfonso162008 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@JosephandtheWorld The text in the plaque says: "The slovenian community in Uruguay pay hommage to their land of origin. Montevideo, June 1997". I don't know the size of the community nowadays or why exactly they came here, but I imagine it must be related to the Cold War and overall conflicts in Europe at that time. Uruguay was always a country of immigrants, and although spaniards and italians were the most numerous, there were always immigrants from a bunch of other countries, and you can find several communities here (although mostly from descendants, not generally first generation migrants).

      @@Alfonso162008 This makes sense. This is the reason I first visited Uruguay, in order to meet some distant family. Although my grandparents came from Hungary to Canada after WWII, one of their uncle/aunt settled in Uruguay around the same time or before. And so I stay with my Uruguayan "cousins" from that side of the family.

    Despite having kind of similar names, Montevideo is less like Montreal (where Joseph and I are both from) and more like Barcelona, in terms of the culture, general appearance, climate, the Rambla by the seaside, etc.

    • @teresasander9173
      @teresasander9173 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Es lógico que se parezca más a Barcelona porque los uruguayos son en su mayoría descendientes de españoles, en menor número de italianos y de otras naciones europeas, en mi caso de alemanes.

    Close your eyes and PRAY (recen)... when we opened them, they had the land...
    Recen is the plural second (vosotros/uds) person for the verb rezar.
