    Virginia, USA. My wife & I just took a demo drive in the 2023 Hyundai Ionic 5 SEL AWD (one level below the most rare Limited version). This car was quiet (no Tesla rattles!), handled very well for a touring car, had excellent brakes and very strong, linear acceleration. The rear seats were nicely comfortable while the front seat were very comfortable. The rear seats fold down to allow a long trunk area which allows a normal road bicycle to fit inside without being dismantled. As 99% of American drivers expect, the salient car information, like a speedometer, was available on the dash directly in Front of the driver - no need to look dangerously far away from the road view like the Tesla requires. Also the many standard buttons and knobs make may things daily tasks super easy to get to and adjust by tactile feel - you are not forced, like in Tesla, to divert your eyes (dangerously) away from the road, and then flip through many, many menus to perform a simple task like turning on the wipers! And another very nice feature of the Ionic 5 is the huge sun/moon roof has a nifty closable cover to prevent passengers from baking in the sun (another glaring fault of Tesla). Sadly, the attractive 20" wheels you show on your test Ionic 5 do not seem to be normally available on 2023 Ionic 5 cars (available so far) in America, which seem to all come with the 19" wheels. My local dealer said that these larger wheels are an option only on the Limited version, however Hyundai USA is not yet accepting orders for specially optioned Ionic 5 cars , yet. And finally, for me, the hatchback look and stance of this car is very cool. The 3/4 view is probably the best in the industry of all SUV/Crossover/Hatchback designs ICE or EV.

    Great 'real world day-to-day' review of the Ultimate RWD, and glad that I found it...I have just ordered the Ultimate AWD 306ps with tech pack, which will be my first move into not only EVs but also away from BMWs, having owned M's, convertibles and currently X5 and into a Hyundai.
    Having test driven the iX40 recently I am really impressed with the boot load space and front & back seating space of the Ioniq 5 as a comparison, and whilst not as an elevated driving position that the iX, the Ioniq 5 seems to tick more boxes for a c.£50K crossover car/SUV versus a £85K (when spec'd) SUV.

    The Ioniq 5 is definitely on my shortlist, I think it is far prettier than the Kia EV6 which is built on the same platform. I love the retro styling of the lights and I think the body is reminiscent of the Lancia Delta HF Integrale rally car from the 80's and 90's. Loved the side by side comparison with the Range Rover, it really doesnt feel so big from behind the wheel though.
    The Vehicle to Load facility is a killer feature, and I think from memory you can charge from 0% to 80% in about 18 minutes at an appropriate fast charger so yeah, this does a lot to dispel any range anxiety.
    One thing I don't like is that when you put it in sport mode the main screen changes from the serene blue to a vibrant red, not a big thing but you don't really want to be highlighting that to your 'passenger'.
    The long range AWD brings the 0-60 time down to 5.2s and that Frunk looks like a useful space too

    • @SHETALKSCARS
      @SHETALKSCARS  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mike - yes IONIQ 5 is a really great addition to the EV offering I agree.
      Thanks for the kind words, appreciate that. I just wanted to demonstrate the actual size as I feel without something to compare it to, it’s a massive optical illusion!
      Would it be your electric car of choice?

    • @mikeperrett1539
      @mikeperrett1539 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SHETALKSCARS It's definitely on my shortlist, although I really like the drive of the Polestar 2. Ultimately of the two I think the Hyundai will be easier to live with. The rearward visibility of the Polestar is compromised and the legroom may make it uncomfortable on longer journeys. So yes I think the Hyundai is probably what I would go for, in Long Range AWD form RRP £45,145.
      There's a massive gap in the EV market though for a convertible - I guess the 'top-down' drag and the smaller battery size would kill the range, but I'm surprised no manufacturer has teased anything yet in either 2 or 4 seat variants.

    • @bilgyno1
      @bilgyno1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mikeperrett1539 I think convertibles are a tiny niche. Most people will prefer a panoramic roof with proper A/C. And why give up one of the advantages of EVs (quietness in the cabin) for a roof that will be closed 95% of the time anyway? Probably also very hard to make one with a proper safety rating.

The Ioniq 5 is on my short list but my wife won't consider it because our neighbours across the street have already put a pre-order on one - can't drive the same car as our neighbours now can we - even though they've ordered one in blue and I'd go for the matte grey? Got one of the AWD limited on order, sadly in New Zealand they're not showing up until Q2 22. Agree with pretty much everything, love the more in depth look at the screens you had than other reviewers. Hoping the heated seats button gets made simpler, that's something that could be done by a downloaded update. Worth noting that the AWD models make 0-100kph in 5.1 seconds (and I've seen the test coming back as a touch under 5 seconds from reviewers), so definitely an option for those who want something quick off the mark. I've seen varying comments around range and I think a good bit of it comes down to how people drive. Overall really excited to see what it's like having one for more than a test drive mid next year.

    No wiper on the back windshield is a show stopper for me. Backup cams are great, but it can be hard to see what's behind that massive C pillar, even with a cam back there. I live in Edmonton and most of our winter involves sloppy roads wet with snow and sand, and I'm constantly using my rear wiper / washer to keep the back window clear. I can't imagine how often I'd have to get out to hand wash the rear windshield if I owned this car.

      @@SHETALKSCARS Here in Edmonton, Canada, on wet winter days, the sand they spread on the road for traction turns to muddy road spray. After about 2 kilometers driving at 80 km/h, my back window is opaque brown, and only the part cleared by the washer/wiper is clear enough to see through. A half hour drive down the freeway may require washing and wiping the rear window about 4 to 5 times. Sadly, the backup cameras also get coated, so they can't be relied upon as a solution here. I really need a back washer/wiper on a car like this.

    Just ordered mine today in the grey matte. It’s an absolutely stunning car. I’ve gone for the ultimate techno pack also . I won’t get it until October That’s the downside.
