NBA legend Dominique Wilkins shares insights into his basketball career and he admits he almost left the Bulldogs, where he averaged over 20 points a game, after his sophomore year to become the first pick for Detroit in the NBA draft. At the time, he chose to stay, largely driven by his team's significant potential. Unfortunately, a subsequent injury affected their performance adversely. After leaving the University of Georgia, Wilkins was picked by the Utah Jazz in 1982's NBA draft, against his desire to stay in Atlanta. He never relocated to Utah, instead, getting traded soon afterward. Reflecting on the time, Wilkins says he doesn't regret his actions or decisions, expressing satisfaction about playing in Atlanta.

He was more than just a great dunker. This man averaged 30 and could have won several scoring titles if not for Jordan's existence.

Absolutely … except for the fact that he would have had the chance to play for two championships, at least (the two they lost to MJ), maybe more with him in the mix? Which means … he would been a bigger star, made more money, and possibly had a better legacy.
So … maybe not?
The Lakers had to choose between him and James Worthy...imagine Magic and the human highlight film during the late 80's?
@@79Glitch good point, talking about exposure: in Atlanta he was able to (freely) display his talents because he was the Guy!!! I also think that in ‘93-‘94 they had a really good and successful team until he got traded to the Clippers for Danny Manning. I’m convinced that they would have beaten the Knicks to be in the Finals against the Rockets that year.

Some you may not know but John Drew was a very good player. He was a hall of fame type player. His downfall was he couldn't quit doing drugs.
John Drew and Freeman Willams were both good players. You know instead of Magic Johnson in 1979, Jerry West wanted to draft Sidney Moncrief. Sidney was a my favorite player growing up, I patterned my game after him, and he's in the hall of fame... But he wasn't Magic, and John Drew wasn't Nique.

On Sidney Moncrief one of my all time favorite photos is the one of Moncrief flying through the air with the ball behind his head when he was at Arkansas. My Hawks had a hard time catching the Milwaukee Bucks.

Just in case some people don't know this, there was another player who played in the NBA named Cliff Robinson, who was a so so player in the league who preceded Clifford Robinson, who was obviously far from a so so player in the NBA.

One of the best players to ever live and in his prime was by far one of the best players in the golden era of basketball. More than just a flashy dunker, he was an incredible scorer , leader and team player. He came close to winning a championship but was denied several times by the Boston Celtics and Chicago Bulls.
I agree he had a legit crew in the 80s, however the Bulls weren't standing in their way in the playoffs. Actually, I would argue that during his peak, Dominique had a better team than MJ. But the Hawks kept getting bounced in the playoffs semis by either the Celtics or Pistons. They could just never get past those teams. And then starting in 1989, the Hawks started dipping... In the same year, the Bulls got better and got all the way to the conference finals where they would begin knocking on the door against the Pistons, and the rest is history... But the Bulls never faced the Hawks in the playoffs during Dominique's prime years.
@@linnstr8609 I was thinking about the early 1990's , specifically in 1993. MJ did eliminate him from the playoffs , but yes, Dominique did have a better team than MJ throughout the 80's.
@@knightdance8377 Yep, MJ did face Nique once in the playoffs in 93. Actually, I reviewed Nique's stats and individually he was still one of the best in the league in the early to mid 90s. So what I said regarding his prime years is not entirely correct. It's just that in the 80s his team was better.

If Dominique goes to Utah, their draft position changes so they may not get Karl Malone. It’s like if Lebron says in Cleveland, they win to many games to get the #1 pick to draft Kyrie.

Utah traded Dominique for one million to save the franchise financially. Had they not been able to make that trade the team probably would have been sold and moved.
Isiah was #2 pick to Detroit. Mark Aguire was 1st.

As a longtime sixers fan I can tell you that is far from the worst trade ever. In the summer of 1986, the sixers traded Moses Malone, Terry Catledge and 2 future first round picks to a team in their same division the Washington Bullets for Jeff Rutland who had bad knees and only played 5 games for the sixers the following season and Cliff Robinson. Then they traded the no.1 overall pick in the 86 draft, who turned out to be Brad Daugherty to Cleveland for career role player Roy Hinson. And more recently they drafted then traded Mikal Bridges to Phoenix for the draft rights to Zaire Smith , who was a bust in both the NBA and the G league. And these are just some of the brutal trades the sixers have made in their history.
na broski i became a fan of the sixers after ai was drafted, the trades they made after they got him were mind boggling, 21 year old tim thomas and larry hughes traded for veterans about to retire in tyrone hill and toni kukoc, unreal, jerry stackhouse for theo ratliff unfreakingreal, i could only imagine what ai could have done with that team had they not gave their talented youth away for washed up vets
Nique came down and stopped in a couple strip clubs while in college. That's why he wanted to stay in Atlanta. Atlanta nightlife catches everyone.

@b9479 but it wasn't as known until 1996 when the Olympics came to Atlanta. That's what really put atlanta on the map but yeah I've heard some stories from my parents about life in atlanta during the 80s lol

Went to Atlanta schools and I remember in 8th grade doing georgia geography which was my social studies class learning everything about Georgia and Atlanta and what I learned (I'm old but I'm not that old) was that prior to 1996 Atlanta was just a regular city it wasn't all that popular no one really goes there etc. Then after the Olympics damn near everyone tryna move there. Still to this day it was getting crowded I had to hop on out of there last year

Dominique wasn’t needed in Utah at the time. The Jazz had Adrian Dantley and he was leading the league in scoring at the time .

You know if he would’ve stayed with the Jazz they would’ve had a sick roster. Next year Jazz drafted Thurl Bailey, then John Stockton, and then Karl Malone… they at least would’ve won 2 or more rings with that roster.
