  • This footage shows a demonstration where a new RAF 'Jackal' drone fires missile at a target. The missile can be seen launching out the new drone as it flies above the ground.
The JACKAL drone capability has been designed and developed by experts from UK-based Flyby Technology, with Turkish partners FlyBVLOS Technology and Maxwell Innovations providing design engineering and prototyping expertise, to fill a recently discovered gap in modern combat operations.
As a Vertical Take Off and Landing (VTOL) platform, JACKAL is designed to satisfy a number of roles, including Battlefield Air Interdiction, Close Air Support, engaging helicopters in flight and killing tanks, to denying the use of runways and roads.
The trial - sponsored by the Rapid Capabilities Office (RCO) of the Royal Air Force - involved teams from Flyby and the technology giant Thales which also manufactures the LMM.

    1) The RAF does not use this drone, this was a test. The person who made this article probably confused it with the "Jackal" lightweight armoured car used by the RAF for rapid paratroop deployment.
    2) The Jackal Drone is made and designed by FlyBVLOS in Turkey (which is the current world leader in combat drones). The missiles are, however, British and if I'm not mistaken the UK-based company "Flyby Technology" essentially purchased the Jackal from Turkey and re configured it to be able to fire the missiles seen here.

@@wharfedale831 There's no "yes and no". Jackal is literally a Turkish drone produced by Fly BVLOS and was sold in April 2022 to the UK. It was merely modified in cooperation with its UK partner Flyby Technologies to fire missiles which was then tested in October 2022 in front of the RAF.
IDK which Turkish UCAV you mean that has the UK-designed component, or whether it's all of them, but having a foreign component doesn't make it a foreign drone or co-production. Turkey has the full export rights to its popular UCAVs such as the TB2, Akinci, Anka, etc and there's never been an export permit required of the UK. Many of the countries that the UCAVs have been sold to could never buy UK weapons themselves. Meanwhile, Fly BVLOS owns the IP to the Jackal overall and therefore Turkey controls its export permit.

In fact, whether it can be achieved depends entirely on political will, how much money and time developed countries are willing to invest in research, and whether bureaucrats will deliberately obstruct it. After the end of the Cold War, funding cuts by various countries caused military research to stagnate.

@@io9883 I didn't mention nationalism and racism. All I was talking about was this. I said that the main manufacturer of this vehicle is Türkiye. However, it was said on British social platforms that this vehicle was of British origin. I just told the facts. As a Turkish citizen, it is an honor to see the demand for such a quality vehicle, to sell it abroad and to make money.

Health and Safety is pretty OTT for ordinary drones, let alone ones that fire missiles. I would think the chain was there in case it decided to go AWOL.

This is still an early prototype. production cost, efficiency, and effectiveness will be tested on the battlefield.

Not quite the same capability as a reaper drone but I feel its lightweight and easy to operate controls may have more practical application in a civilian environment
