- Hi guys and gals here we have today the all new 2012 retooled Trackmaster Douglas, I got this on ebay as soon as I saw it because it fills a gap in my collection. It wasn't cheap at around $40 delivered but i believe thats just because it is so new and soon the novelty will wear off and prices will drop.
Well he looks identical to his twin except for the face but a couple of areas became apparently different during and after filming so i will tell you here, the buffer on the front of the tender is different on the 2012 and the cab is slightly larger on the 2012. The axles on the tender are plastic and i should have really done a rolling test of the tenders on their own EDIT: I did and they roll equally well, also the plastic on the tender feels cheap and a different texture and hardness to the usual plastic used. The quality of the tender wheels themselves also seems suspect as they are molded as a complete axle and wheel unit. Also the tender is so light that it could affect how it pulls heavier trains around bends.
The locomotive plastic itself is of the normal type that we know for these engines, the drive unit is the flat type as it is in the Hit Donald but this new one is quite a bit quieter. It runs very well and was slightly faster after a lap or so of running than the hit Donald who is the one making all the noise in the video. The way the body lifts off to change the batteries is also very different and I can see why they have done that as there is less parts needed to manufacture this engine now instead of a 2 piece body where just the boiler lifts off. The direction they are heading in with plastic axles is quite disturbing as history will show that toys with plastic axles never last or roll as well over time as ones with metal axles, like i said in the video we will see over time :p
Overall a good toy and i am happy with it despite the tender being a let down, I hope this is not a direction they head in with more locomotives as they could ruin a very good thing. One of the good things about these trains is I have some that are 30 years old and due to the metal axles they roll just as well now and are easy to clean and repair etc. I fear they are making them more of a throw away toy.
I give the locomotive a score of 7/10 it runs brilliantly but the tender is crap if i'm honest.

Coming back to this video nearly 12 years later, we had no idea that those plastic tender axles were a sign of things to come
2008 Donald and Douglas are still the best models, by the way
yeah thats because it is a pretty well made knock off version

yes and something else i noticed on these instructions is the battery change for douglas is incorrect now lol
I'm not sure how I feel about the new face. Yes, the pupils are smaller, and that's a good thing, but there's something about it that looks.. off. Noticed it's smoother than the other, I wonder if it has anything to do with the CG series look. When the Take-N-Play engines were made, engines like Molly had their faces smoothed out, to make them fit in with the current series more.
The number application is far crisper than the Tomy toy, and they look like they run well.

I bought several tomica world city train sets when they were very cheap, i bought track packs when they were cheap and available and i bought ebay lots with track and trains in them. I was collecting track for about 3 months to build this layout.

I have the same problem as well. I took off the stickers and then cleaned it. Using Fox Transfers with the correct numbers and lining it stuck to the tender. You see you are right ucwepn, the glue does not stick properly to the new plastic? The Fox Transfers solved this issue. Try it.
POssibly they are coming back to the tv show or a movie, or theres just good money in having a set of twins needing to buy both etc.
I would like to get Donald and Douglas but they will probably come out in 2013 as Stafford is on the instructions
Yes i agree its terrible that stores in Australia only sell Trackmaster.
I was glad I got Douglas which is the Hit version that I got off of ebay.
I have a trackmaster Douglas (2012 model) and he is a quiet engine, but sounds a bit whiny when put on tomy rails. It has the same cheapy plastic tender as yours. I am waiting for the 2013 Trackmaster Donald to be released in March.
no I don't have him but I did get him for my dad for Christmas so I have seen him run and its a very nice engine :)

yes i agree, there are still some decent engines but those will be all changed soon probably.
How to make a big layout? spend lots of money and have allot of space hehe, good engines!! Merry Christmas all you peoples in Canada!
Energizer and Duracell I prefer Duracell ultra they seem to last quite a bit longer. I have to buy all my batteries myself and i get no freebies etc from any companies.

Thanks for this video! We just got the Hit version of Douglas(2007?) and I was lost on how to change the battery! ( I wrecked his James before so I was scared!)

yes its a surprise and a bit of a letdown, the new packaging hides all these little secrets under the cardboard like the tender wheels

Yes its so sad but true, that toys are not produced in the same high quality standard way anymore! Takaratomy who are still building Thomas & Friends for the Japanese market make a much better model. Good plastic - good paint finish and better packaging all round!

motorized thomas and friends is trackmaster only in stores here, of course they have take n play and wooden but those don't really interest me much (I did buy several wooden motorized james' though and 1 motorized wooden thomas)

Mattel do allot of great lines but they also seem to do allot of rubbish flavor of the month type products and when they don't sell well they move on to the next big thing, hope that doesn't happen here. the first sign will be even more cost cutting.
