    “The first step occurs when a foot, or both feet, touch the floor AFTER gaining control of the ball.”
    I.e. gather / zero step
    I wouldn’t suggest that you try any of these as they would probably get called. I’m only clarifying the rules. Again this video is only to teach rules not teach moves. I DON’T suggest you try these I DON’t suggest you teach these. I’m only clarifying the rule and what it allows. This is a huge part as to why Harden Giannis and Kyrie are amazing finishers around the rim because they have incredible footwork but these are some of the most advanced moves. I would only teach them in person when I can monitor every movement.

      Salt a lot of people would! Even me after watching this video.
      If you think about it,,, you can take as many steps as you want in between your dribbles,, and then two more steps before finishing,,, you might as well take only ONE dribble and run with the ball (as long as it’s not a carry) and then pick it up to the finish it. That wouldn’t be fair. The rules of basketball doesn’t need changing! Get better if you wanna score; don’t try to bend the rules.

    So how does palming play into this? It's hard to tell from the video but it seems like for some of these in order for the ball to stay in your hand when your hand is behind the ball, you would have to be palming it. That counts as picking the ball up, so wouldn't that constitute the beginning of the two steps?

    Half of these were travels because in the middle of his gather he gained enough control of the ball to pass or shoot. He just chooses to extend the gather in an unnatural way to create enough ambiguity to exploit the rule. But the rule says that while a player is gathering, as soon as the player is ABLE to pass or shoot, the gather is completed.

    2:00. This perfectly articulates why I disagree with the legality of these moves: I don’t think you can still dribble. If you did, any referee worth his salt would call a carry and a turnover. So, most of these plays are either a travel or a carry (if you dibbled after). I do appreciate the care you took. The principle is something we agree on. We disagree on the execution. 2:30 is an example of what would be an easy carry had you continued your dribble to the left after that palm and juke to the right.

    Thanks for the slowed-down videos - makes all the difference in trying to understand things. I agree these are all legal moves, except one. As a ref I would have called you for carrying the ball in the move shown in slow motion at the 1:41 mark (also shown at 0:12 and again at the 2:02/2:03 mark). You can clearly see the ball stops falling naturally due to gravity (watch it compared to the wall). That's because more than half of your hand is under the mid-plane of the ball (all except your thumb) and your fingers are adding a slight upward force. That's the definition of carrying the ball, and it has nothing to do with how many steps you take while dribbling (you can be called for carrying even if both feet are stationary). Any good ref should catch the hand under the mid-plane and the resulting unnatural ball movement, and call it for what it is: carrying.

    • @onlyfacts3178
      @onlyfacts3178 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      you can also carry the ball sideways...gathering its about gaining control of the ball, people focus on the feet when its mostly about the hands..
      if you are moving forward with the ball sideways (far from your body ) that means that you have control of the ball.
      Gathering the ball doesnt need to be with 2 hands...its when you gain control of the ball, if you are carrying the ball the steps start counting immediately even if you didnt even grabbed the ball with both hands...
      2 scenarios can happen its a travel or if you dribble the ball again its a carry.

    You are travelling in several of these. You cannot change the momentum of the ball for it to be a true gather. The hand under the ball is irrelevant. Hand on side or even on top of ball still allows you to slow/change the momentum of the ball. It is a DISCONTINUED DRIBBLE. Allen Iverson cupped side of ball, Jordan palmed the ball from top. The NBA wants excitement so they let it slide and now we have Harden step back and Isaiah Thomas discontinued dribble. If you change the down dribble timing you are carrying/travelling.

The dribble ends when the ball is in both hands or when the one hand on the ball goes below the equator of the ball. In this position the foot that is on the floor or first foot to touch the floor is the pivot foot. If the dribbling hand goes below the equator of the ball when dribbling, then dribbler continues dribble, then this is a CARRY violation. Also, if the player starts to gather the ball without first going below the equator of the ball, then officials will consider this an end to the dribble as well.
