When I was an ASE certified technician it amazed me at how many people got mad because they bought a $35,000 vehicle and still had to maintain it. Cars don't magically fix themselves, if you let things go, sooner or later all those items will add up to a $5000 repair bill.

    • @NJPurling

People have got too used to tech being essentially disposable. They carry that attitude into other areas. When I was a little guy in short pants my Pa taught me how to recognise the parts of a car engine. Back then a guy could fix stuff at the roadside with spit, baling wire and profanity. Now a small car engine is a briar patch of hoses and wires & you can't understand WTF is going on. It is very easy for the unscrupulous to exploit people.

Was a time when you had to change the oil and fluids, manufacturers pushed service intervals further and further, plugs never used to last long, heads came off to "de-coke" them, now plugs go 3 to 4 times longer, cars no longer have points which need adjusting, oils can be sealed for life, engine oil change intervals are many times longer, instead of weekly checks people just wait for the light to come on.

Tearing down an engine and getting all the parts properly machined is around 3,500 and goes up from there depending on complexity and amount of parts.

Backyard mechanic here. I noticed the trouble you had removing the coolant hoses. My wife's father showed me this trick. Instead of pulling the hose and prying away from the hose connection, grab the stuck end of the hose with a pair of plyers while its stuck on the hose connection, instead of pulling, rotate the hose back and forth til it does so smoothly. Once the hose breaks loose, it'll pull off much quicker. Too each their own. Great content. Take Care!

Gotta be careful doing this on older hoses and plastic parts. I have twisted the nipple or fitting off this way before, hence why I stopped doing it this way. $130 for a new aux coolant pump for the turbo because the hose fitting twisted right around with the hose.

Hi Ray...FYI silicone and rubber type gaskets and o rings are susceptible breakdowns after being exposed to Heptane, a component in most brake cleaner sprays. If brake cleaner spray is used for flush out quick degrease clean up be sure all the fluid is completely evaporated BEFORE you place the gaskets or o rings in their slots. If the gasket gets wet with Heptane it may very well fail in a short time. I found out the hard way on a brand new set of intake seals took a crap after less than 1000 miles. Brake component gaskets/seals are Heptane resistant. Peace Brother Love ur videos

So after I spent 250 dollars on new Chrysler transmission fluid and having to let sit over night to firm up the pan seal black sealer so it wouldn't leak now after a year the fluid still looks new and red so I will change it again in March as this transmission, (a te62) does a wonderful job of keeping the cruise speed even on steep hills at that set. After having several transmissions that over revved the engine this one seems very nice with that Pentastar 3.6l engine I likes it a lot. Must do more work to keep it that way.

I can verify that that indeed was the leak. There are very deep casting voids in that area under the oil cooler that were full to the top. Those voids are 2 1/2 to 3 inches deep. Was really fun soaking all the oil and coolant out of the area when I did mine. These oil coolers are a known failure point mostly due to over torquing the oil filter cap during the oil change.

Gonna clue you in on a little secret here - the components, as well as the materials they are made of and the suppliers of same, are an integral part of modern engine design. You cannot separate one from the other. If an engine is made with shoddy parts, it is because it is designed that way, not because some beancounter stuck his nose where it didn't belong and somehow replace good parts with lousy parts. Chrysler builds to a (low) price point, and this is directly reflected in its abysmal product quality.

New rockers and cams will fix it right up, but it is a big job and the parts are fairly expensive, Each cam is 300-400 cost where I live and there are 4 of them. Rockers are around $12 cost and there are 24 to replace as well as the job pays 6.5hours for both banks. It also requires special timing tools to lock cams and release the timing tensioners.

My brother...With all due respect as someone turning wrenches and more for 35 years...Lots of tips and tricks need to be shared with you to make your job easier and have it go smoother. A simple one: On hoses like you were prying off early on...use channel locks and give a light twist with light squeeze pressure. The seal with pop and it will pull right off. Doing what you are doing can cause splits in the hoses. Another...get a vacuum! The crap in the intake needs to be vacuumed out, not wiped! Snap on makes a great small vacuum that runs off compressed air for just such jobs, but even a shop vac is better than nothing. Wiping like you are doing ultimately gets crap into the runners, and even though you have towels shoved in there, you're not getting all the gunk that falls down there out. I'm a fan of taping off the runners after stuffing towels. Okay, one more. LOL Do NOT use brake cleaner on plastic and rubber components!!! EVER. If you have to degrease like that, use carb cleaner at least but even then...If you want to super clean for gasket seal etc denatured alcohol after removing the major gunk is good for that.
Just some love from an old wrench, engineer and shop owner.
PS. Have fun dealing with stupid owners who are already paying 75% of the labor to get the valve covers off and still refuses to go the extra step. I actually got to a point that if the customer didn't want to do the job right and in full, I suggested they find a shop that will cut corners because we don't. 50% of the time (And I'm being kind) when the other failing parts finally fail and you were the last one to touch it...you'll have that fight on your hands with them how you didn't cause it. They'll MF you, not appreciate you were willing to short the job and then give you bad reviews. It's a losing battle. People love that their 3.5l engines are making 300+ hp, get great mileage, NVH etc but don't want to hear these technical marvels need maintenance. I see people brag all the time that they got 100K miles from their cars and only did oil changes, tires and maybe brakes. **facepalm**

Whenever I remove parts which are retained by grommets (air intake, battery tray, engine cover, etc.), I always apply just a bit of silicone grease to the grommets when I put things back together. They do. It released about 2 weeks after I did the lifters on my friend's pentastar. 🙄

I recently did this job on my Charger and it wasn't until I got the lower intake off that I realized I didn't have the right socket to get the oil cooler off, luckily my neighbor works on cars and had the right one and was kind enough to let me use his snap on electric ratchet which mad the rest of the job much easier.

A metric socket works perfectly fine for removing inverted torx bolts . I used to R&R car seats everyday using them . Try it if you don't believe me !

My take away is I'm glad I never owned (and never will own) an imported vehicle. I've done a lot of hobby mechanic work in my life (I'm 83) and I've never seen anything as difficult as the job shown in this video. Thank you!

This a Chrysler, not an import.
All modern vehicles are hard to work on because everything has a sensor these days and vacuum systems have gotten crazy to comply with emissions.
My ‘04 Mazda Miata has been the easiest vehicle I have ever had the pleasure of working on.

I wish they would have gotten the rocker arm and broken motor mount replaced. It’s best to replace them before more damage is done.

i see the dodge brand is up to their usual quality standards.if it dont leak all over the showroom floor in 12 hours, its good enough for the chrysler execs.its hard to believe people still buy them.they must not do any pre buying research at all.or maybe they love pain & constant misery.

I have had one dodge and it was absolutely through lack of thorough research. Fortunately I got it cheap and was able to at least recoup quite a bit when I sold it, but yeah I'm back to Toyota.
I think dodge/chrysler/jeep (I intentionally excludes fiat in the name) makes nice looking vehicles and therein lies the appeal. I will probably never own a jeep wrangler, but damn they are good looking vehicles.

I had a Dodge Omni and the paint started peeling after a few years. The paint shop said the primer coat was too smooth. For years after that I would notice other car with peeling paint and they were almost always Dodges. This really made me shy away from Dodges. The Omni had other problems also which contributed to my ill will. I was very happy with a particular Dodge Dealership though and was very happy with there work. It is hard to find good repair shops.

Isn’t this the 3.6 pin star award winning engine? Yeah if you go to the quick oil change places they are going to over tighten the oil cap and caused the cracking which causes the oil leak but in your case it’s the coolant leak to remedy this simply put some Vaseline on the oil cap threads or a grease from your grease gun. And that engine coolant definitely isn’t recommended for this engine it’s a red coolant recommended by the Chrysler ram people. BTW if you know you’re going to do a teardown of this magnitude you can order a lot of these parts on Amazon for a fraction of the price the parts stores sell them.Merry Christmas Ray Ray and to all a good night 🌙!

I would highly recommend when on putting on hoses, use a little bit of petroleum jelly on the inside of the house to make it easier to put on.
