    Welcome to this special Wisecrack Edition on the Philosophy of Shia LaBeouf, exploring the motivations behind one of the most enigmatic actors and internet sensations around. After bouncing from one tabloid scandal to another, Shia LaBeouf emerged as an auteur of the bizarre with his #IAMSORRY installation - a performance art piece aimed at apologizing to the world with sincerity. Drawing from pop culture references like Deadpool, Spring Breakers and Brittney Spears, we dive headfirst into understanding how sincerity and apology works in a world of post-modern cynicism and disillusionment.

    Shia LaBeouf is a genius. He masterfully walks-the-line between fame and infamy. He toys with the juxtaposition between art and life. He's like a modern day Andy Kaufman.

      I think the reason that it was a good translation, where translations of other books fall short, is that Holes is a book that even an average paced reader could finish in a day. Putting it into a 90 minute movie without leaving anything out, is very possible, and therefore likely to make fans happy. Trying to do that with a longer books, i.e. Harry Potter, is bound to leave fans annoyed that their favorite book seems to feel abridged or hollow. Of course there is a decent amount of skill from the director, writer and actors to thank, but a manageably sized book is crucial, if not mandatory. I can't think of any really long book, translated into a single movie, that satisfied fans of the book.

      Wouldn't it be cool if they started adapting books like LOTR and Harry Potter into TV shows to give it time to fully flesh out characters and events and not leave anything from the books out ? ... That would be awesome !
      And yes I remember holes, it was good too.

    • @peterr6205
      @peterr6205 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sam D It would be awesome. Problem is money. Movies make a lot more bang for your buck. Shows like that would cost a lot of money. Licensing the source material alone would be a nightmare and put the production over budget. Whoever owns the rights to those books, will probably never let anyone else do a TV/Movie adaptation, until they do a reboot in 10-15 years.

    • @eps3154
      @eps3154 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      I agree. I'd guess it's both. Don't think pranks as art is anything new. 'Hollywood' is basically an eponym for industrialized art/cinema. Of course growing up in that Laboef would be bored... His method of coping seem genuine, he seems to want to be 'a real artist'. I can see why metamodernism would be his post-adolescent rebellion of choice. It's refreshingly self aware & he's obviously intelligent. Just not sure if I enjoy it. Maybe his work is more profound in person (like the #sorry exhibit.) This Wisecrack video on him is definitely interesting though..

      @Elle P - Wow, thank you. I said when Shia was on Even Stevens that he was going to be something special. My friends kept making fun of me. Then he started doing Transformers and stuff, and I was starting to doubt my statement, but held firm. I said these are his nestegg movies. Then he will be able to do what he really wants and what I think he is capable of. Then I saw all these strange things online. First thought was drugs. Then I was like, nahhhh. That's Shia. This HAS to be intentional and calculated. It wasn't until your comment that I started to get it. I never even thought of him starting as a child actor. So many want to break from the image they had as a child and appear grown up. Shia actually wants to shed the image as someone creating commercial art and be seen as a true artist. That's so profound. And we have to remember...Shia is delving into this just like anyone else who starts something new. The early stuff might not hit a homerun and click for people because he is learning to "ride a bike". The more he progresses, the better he will get. I am psyched to go along for the ride and say I believed in him.

    I've always liked Shia, even in his low moments. I think the phenomena of metamodernism is definitely an apt way to approach how Shia acts, and is similar to the process of, much like his 'Do it' video, "dank memeing". Hold on, allow me to explain. When internet memes became commonplace among mineal groups on the Internet (4chan), they oftentimes invoked feelings of sincerity, which was apropriated by major groups and so became "cringey". Organizations adopting memes was seen as a way to say "how do you do fellow kids?". As such, the creation of memes became cynical, and the phenomena of "dank" memes was embodied by those who perpetuated popular memes. However, by creating a meme that makes fun of the nature of memes, one may feel hypocritical. Now we enter the golden era of memery with the creation of the meme: "Born too late to explore the Earth. Born too early to explore the galaxy. Born just in time to browse dank memes". This functions as a form of metamodernism in that it simultaneously acknowledges the trivial nature of memes but accepts their now everpresent spot in society to which we must indulge in or be upset by. h3h3 expressed this phenomena as "embracing the meme," and by one doing so, can enjoy memes while also being cynical about their presence in modern society.

    Oh, so it's called metamodernism... Spring Breakers stuck with me for a very long time because it seemed impossible to me. On one hand, a lot of it is superficial and trashy, just like many consider the whole movie and everything about it to be. But on the other hand, I can't deny I felt *something* genuine and sincere in it. I couldn't come to terms with the fact that it could be both, like a cognitive dissonance in my head. I thought I might be reading too much into it and that it's really only trash. But... it isn't. So yeah, I can now let it go to rest by classifying it under "metamodernism", because all of it had to be intentional. A very fascinating movie indeed.

      It's the belief that, while there are pure, perfect experiences, you can never show them or embody them; the only way to achieve them is to experience the moments in which they live. Thus, you attempt an open parody of them because you know being a "good bad" example is the closest you're going to get.

And the reason I originally stated that it'd never be done is because this show usually covers more mainstream stuff and not alot of ppl have heard of him(hyde), and also idk he might be a little too rated R for this show lol but this channel has given criticisms to PC culture so idk maybe they'll be open-minded to it lol. Sam Hyde has definitely inspired many-a-thoughts in me haha which is why I wanted it to be done so bad. Maybe one day :)

  • @theeNappy

    So metamodernisim is just being non-committal.

    • @timetochronicle
      @timetochronicle 7 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      I find postmodernism to be more non-committal. At least both the metamoderns and the modernists would agree on some kind of truth and ideal

    • @theeNappy
      @theeNappy 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      True, but this metamodernisim stuff tries to attain that truth without putting in the legwork nessisary for impact. At least postmodern cynicism doesn't pretend to be something else.

    • @timetochronicle
      @timetochronicle 7 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      I guess its one of those things where, we have to understand why the metamodernism movement came about, as a response to postmodernism.
      See, cynical as postmodernism is, its also a philosophy that does "not" work with many previously established systems. Nor is it a system, I find, would be relateable to certain movements that ahve been associated with postmodernism.
      To explain: we live our lives with purpose. Or rather, at least most people do. If you go to work, go to a bank, or even if you are just a basement dweller watching anime, you can at least say you are having some form of reason or motive. Aristotle would consider this the telos, Kant mentioned the categorical imperative and so on. But the postmodernists took Nietzsche's "On Truth and Lies in a Nonmoral Sense" and pushed it further by saying there was little to no truth and nothing really mattered. This sounds fine and dandy for your coffee drinking hipster or pretentious art student, but its not just relevant to, a sI said, previous belief systems. Thats not to say they are wrong either - there are people who, afetr some form of tragedy or loss, lose reaosn or meaning in their lives because a belief system may be found to be lacking (a point, I find, Nietzsche was trying to convey. amongst others)
      That, I find, is the strength of metamodernism. If I have to use a superhero example, there is a scene in the Avengers where Nick Fury says "its an old fashioned thing". Which it is. Working together, as a team, is old fashioned. But it works. And while it is nocommittal, that doesn't mean you can't believe in it, or have some semblance of it be relevant to you. Sure, Shia's video may be seen as a joke video. But, sometimes, I have found people who were motivated, ironically enough, by the Shia video to actually do things. That, I find, to be the goal of metamodernism - a means of accepting the lacking objectivity of a belief system, yet, working with it because "it still works"

    • @theeNappy
      @theeNappy 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Nice explanation. I still see metamodernisim as modernism without the conviction nessisary to stand by the sincerity, allowing distance from the tender core of itself through the "joke," but now I can respect the basis of the philosophy more.

    • @EionBlue
      @EionBlue 7 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      I wouldn't say it's not putting in the legwork, it's just putting in a different kind of legwork.
      Instead of just outright telling you the truth, it shows you how the "insencerity" of post-modernism can be counterproductive, kinda like instead of just telling you to believe in a truth, it shows someone ridiculing it, then becoming a hobo because of drug addiction and going through a sincere experience of the truth.
      Basically, delivering the truth through the antithesis of the modernist ideal, a modernist ideal with a postmodernist methodology.
