I work from home and I live downtown in my city with plenty of public transit around me, so I don't NEED a full on vehicle. The financial benefits of having an ebike and not needing a license, registration, insurance, or (most importantly in these days and times) GAS more than outweighs whatever convenience benefits a motorcycle might offer, for me.
im a cyclist at heart, i like to pedal. no one on a super 73 or a onyx ever pedals. they are just scooters. i love my frey because it is powerful and its an awesome bike overall.
Hey, I'm a new subscriber. I want to let you know I enjoy your content. I'm also a fellow New Jerseyan. Been ebiking for five years. I have two now, but I use the one almost exclusively now. That being 12K enduro I got from China. I'm really pleased with it. I've changed the seat and handle bars along with the grips, little customization to make it real comfortable. I think the ebike you ran across in your last video is a Cad Recon model. That seat is distinctive, and it's 20K in that hub motor. The price for a base model is about 9K, with all the options about 16K. I bought mine for 3.6K and shipping of .6K, so 4.2K total. Keep pedaling.
For me, I feel at some point the goal will be to get a low end (price) electric motorcycle. Hopefully the super 73 version can fit that bill, but I'm sure they're going to overprice it.
Great content and certainly food for thought. If I was younger, I would definitely want an electric motorcycle. But at 65 yrs young, I'm quite content to go 33 mph on my AR X Class. I will admit Kevin AKA the Frikkin' Shredder has me eyeballing the Cab Motorworks Eagle with it's bicycle seat and bicycle like appearance. I live out in the country, and find myself alone on the open roads many times. It would be nice to fly the 3 miles into our small town if need be. I cruise the 3 miles in the low 30's with my AR, but once into town and traffic I always keep it below 20 mph to keep under law enforcement's radar.
According to federal law it ain't an e-bike over 750 watts. You got it backwards. It's the hub fans that are overhyping. If you like riding a bicycle a mid-drive is superior. If you like riding a moped a hub is superior.
Not really fair. I have owned and ridden a lot of both. I prefer mid drive but hub motor bikes are fine for steady state cruising...not that great on hills. Hub motors in fact serve the broader public better because they remove onus on shifting the bike. A mid drive is more like riding a motorcycle where you want to be in the right gear. The average rider is always in the wrong gear and the motor labors and they either don't care or can't hear it. Hub drives are sometimes referred to as 'hot motors' because all that resistance if in the wrong gear and taxing the motor too much, they turn into toasters...windings create heat against an amateur that isn't turning enough RPM.
@@lukewalker1051 Sorry but facts ain't fair. You're absolutely right about a hub serving the general public better. I'd offer a few caveats to your thoughts. 1 is that the broader public is not coming from a cycling background, where gears are necessary as is knowing which is right. The average person shopping an e-bike isn't actually looking to ride like that, they'd prefer a moped like ride where gears are unnecessary. On the heat issue you're only half right because a mid-drive in low gear can spin fast, as electric motors like to do, so they don't have to bog down on hills and build up heat like a hub motor would.
@@michaelsprinzeles4022 Agree with many of your points but have to disagree all day on what motor climbs hills best. Mid drive everyday with the short gear inches only a mid drive can provide. Ride a bicycle in a short gear with rear hub motor only helps the rider and not the motor. On a mid drive, short gear inches help both.
@@lukewalker1051 I'm not sure I understand. By "short gear" do you mean the lowest/largest gear or highest/smallest gear? My experience has been that, all other things being equal (battery & motor power, rider & bike weight), using the gears a mid-drive will climb steeper hills in the lowest gear and attain higher speeds in the highest. Assuming the motor speeds aren't limited by the controller.
@@michaelsprinzeles4022 We must be talking past one another. I agree with your last post and why mid drives are the best climbing ebikes. Short gear traditionally in car, motorcycle and bicycle parlance means 'smallest chainring in front and biggest cog in the back. Gear inches is the traditional reference....you can google it if you like...its the ratio of the front sprocket diameter to the rear sprocket X the bicycle wheel diameter....a ratio of all three as tire diameter affects gearing as well. Shorter gear inches means less gear inches which means the bike travels a shorter distance for each turn of the crank. Maybe you have heard of a car with long gearing. Long gearing refers to a car will travel farther in top gear for one revolution of the crankshaft. For a drag car for example, many run a 4.56 or 4.88 rear differential gear which allows for better acceleration. This is referenced to a shorter gear than a car that would run at the Bonneville Salt flats and go over 200 mph which requires 'taller' gearing. I run a 'tall gear' on my BBSHD ebike for example. I use the biggest front sprocket sold by Lekkie which is 52 teeth. This is because I don't want to spin out with my legs at close to 40mph. If you care to see the math behind this, the great Sheldon Brown made famous, google: Gear inches explained - bicycle gearing Hope that helps and cheers Michael.
I have a 1000watt Fat Tire, and an Onyx RCR. I love them both but I definitely still want a Sur Ron very badly, and will likely get one eventually. I love the Onyx but it’s heavy af and just not a great “dirt bike” even with the DRT kit. Keep up the videos bro, I’m enjoying them. I live in South Jersey.. maybe we could ride together some time:)
Your voice sounds exactly like one of these dudes who acted like the head of a crypto coin I was in and then pump and dumped hundreds of thousands of peoples money

Hey what’s up so I have a question 🙋♂️ I have a GT20 e-bike it have a look of a. E bike / dirtbike. And look of a motorcycle and the top speed is 31 i’m located in Washington DC. The people are telling me it has a look because it has a front light and tail light. On the back of it so I’m trying to figure out do I need to register it to the DMV where I am at? It cannot keep up with the highway or city cars. Only times they go fast when I’m going down the hill when I’m doing like 55 to 60 sometimes going straight line I’m only doing 29 to 30
Wow, the sondors went up $1000! For so long it was $5000. I really have only started riding an e bike but for the price it would be worth it to buy a motor cycle due to how far I drive to work. My issue is battery longevity. I have a very history with radio controlled vehicles. Batteries can hit of miss on life span. Not to mention burn to the ground. We will see how long the new battery I have lasts over the summer.
To me, It boils down to how fast you want to go. Over 35-40 mph, get a motorcycle with motorcycle components. Also, please be respectful of people on paths. No one wants a bike flying by them where there walking, it’s dangerous. Eventually states will forbid ebikes on trails.
Congrats on 2K subs! I'm not sure if you covered it already or not, but it would be nice to see a range test on this set up. (2000w hub (45amp controller, 72v battery)
Have an electro n companys 72v razor kit plus lift kit on a mx650. Love my 52v19ah35amp fat ebikes in city/bike paths/small commutes, but 72v23ah80amp kicks ass but lack of pedals means more legal style riding and needing street confidence at 25-45mph.
Some of the bikes out there qualify as an electric moped. In my state you don't need a motorcycle license although it would need registered and insurance is recommended.
I would check out the xion cyberx if you want a real head scratcher to decide between ebike and emotorcycle. It has a 750 watt continuous motor that peaks at 8k or so which is just dumb. It does not look like a bike. It does 50mph+. However it does supposedly meet all the requirements for a legal ebike.
The one you discovered is like my build except for I don't have no 8,000 watts in it my belt has 5,000 watts and it still considered an e-bike cuz I have to pedal it to make it move it weighs as much as me so maybe 160 lb or more and I think it tops out it may be 50 downhill I know it does 50 something flat out I think it might be able to hit 50 it's a 72 volt 5000 w on 26-in bicycle rims rear hub
Ebike for me every time, Blurring the line between them is dodgy but a DIY conversion is a nice compromise, you can still pedal and so get unlimited range and stay under the radar pretending it's just a bicycle but have speed at hand and a none sweaty ride if you want. If I ever want a motorbike I'd just get a gas one until prices are comparable and range is there too.
Completely agree. Gas motorbikes starting around 9 hp like the 125cc Honda Grom make a lot more sense than an Enduro style ebike which aren't accepted much on MUP's anyway, are slower and more expensive if building big watts. 1500-2000w's is fine on a pedal bicycle.
@@lukewalker1051 yep, even 1000w is ok my lightweight conversions. Enduro looks cool maybe but too much like a motor bike and defo frowned upon both on roads and paths. I also like my Frey ex ( mid drive )for more serious off roading. Nice thing with bikes is you can have a few to suit your needs seeing as they dont take much space and the conversions are cheap enough and no need for mot tax and insurance etc so small running cost .
I'm in. I'm ust getting ready to buy or build my first ebike. But I used to ride motorcycle so I'm into that world too. At 54 yrs. I'm not sure it would be good for me physically! LOL
I would go with an e-bike or e-bike kit, based on the portability and price. Performance and price when it comes to e-bike kits. Anything beyond that I would go with a gas motorcycle, you could get a Triumph 660 for 7,500 less than a Zero SR for the same performance.
I think e bike is great because even if you run out of battery it is still can be pedal.. but e motorcycle maybe they are more faster? But if it run out of battery than you should walk with the motorcycle I more like e bike or e skate board e bike is great for speed and if you worry about the battery run out,you can still pedaling And e skate board is good for someone that need speed but they don't like parking or worry the vehicle get steal It is can be brought in bag like back pack, not totaly "light" but still compare to the e bike or e scooter, definitely more light E scooter great,it can be DIY wheel chair attachment, and i think some store was allowed it go inside store It can be used as shopping cart, and you don't have to worry it is going to be steal (if it was allowed to go inside building/store) if not,i'm not so sure,it depends🙂
Yes I would love to get a emotobike however I am looking for ebike something with power, able to go off road but it's ok to pedal so yea something close to the likes of sur ron but in my area the sur ron is illegal so maybe a moped style something likes of the grizzly but again sadly I can't get it here in Australia. Help me someone! been researching a tun
The Zero is way better. Guys get sur rons for over 4k and then add another 4k into it to get it where they want it. I know this because I have had two sur rons and sold them both because I was not willing to put all the money into them to get them where I would want them. All the rest of the ones you listed suck to me. I personally hate hub motors. I have built two BBSHD mid drive bikes and now own a Lune X2 emtb with 2000 watt bafang 600 motor. I don't ride much on the road like you because I have a new Tesla model 3 performance for that. I put a bike rack on that and can take my emtb to different trails I like to ride. If I ever get a two wheel ev for the street it's going to be that low end Zero. I keep thinking of building another ebike with a 3000 watt BBSHD mid drive just for the fun of it but just can't get myself to do that right now.
I don't think I'll be in the market for an electric motorcycle. The whole reason why I have an ebike is because my driver's license is revoked.. also I want to avoid more fees like buying gas, registration, insurance, etc . A 50mph ebike does me just fine.
Just discovered you today and I sure am glad I did. You have helped me greatly in making my final decision on buying or building an EBike. Keep up the good work man!
Surron and that other bike ur friend took aren’t ebikes..ebikes have been defined by federal laws back from 2002..motor has to be 750w or lower..and states have their own laws on top of that sometimes requiring the bike to be 100lbs or lower as well..surron doesn’t fit any ebike criteria
Electric motorcycle have more voltage and high speed for freeway and more few city town but ebike more like run around city if one high power ebike would go on freeway that would be dope but need more voltage like around 200 volt or 300 volt the problem with the is law need to be to drive lesson
Friends we are living in the best of times when it comes to loop hole culture.I'm flying down the road laughing like a kid no way in hell am I throwing that away for a over priced emoto with when it comes down to it limited power and range with alot of hidden costs insurance, registration, etc .plus riding all these hidden trails are priceless .we are phantoms , kings of the night ✌👍
First let me say, I think you are open minded and think about many of the right considerations of what to build. Each of us are different and therefore we will likely prefer something different. I have a heavy engineering background and grew up building everything from high performance gas mini bikes to go karts and later in life racing motorcycles and cars. I lurked in the ebike space and then made the plunge last August and built my first ebike...a BBSHD road bike as in skinny tires and drop handlebar. I ride it with elite cyclists in town. I raced bicycles as well when younger and still ride top 2% for my age group. You don't pedal much so I believe you lean more toward the electric motorcycle camp. Having pedals on your bike is to allow you to skirt the law which is cool. When I was 12 years old...I am likely your grandfather's age....the minibike I built would do 45mph. So I was an early adopter to mini motos and love them to this day and ran from cops as a little kid and was good at getting away. So let me explain the line of demarcation 'for me.' No pedals? Gas and licensed. Can be any horsepower, doesn't matter. I love 100hp motorcycles and low power motos as well. Comparing to electric moto's, I prefer gas for low and high hp. The 125cc gas powered Honda Grom for $4K which for 2022 has a 5 speed gearbox, full lights, good brakes and suspension and will do 60mph. A guy like me modifying it...put a big bore kit, cam, induction, and it will 70mph for only a grand more or a bit less. With pedals? Electric 'bicycle'...not like what you ride in your videos or the big power enduro style e-moto you reference in your video with massive hub motor. I just ordered a new bicycle for my next build. A Cannondale Trail 6 29er hardtail mountain bike. I will mount a BBSHD on it because I prefer it to the CYC Stealth motor but yours doesn't sound too loud for some reason and I believe that's because you are supplementing power with your rear hub drive which reduces internal gear stresses and reduces noise the CYC is known for. What I learned is...my roadbike at close to 40mph does not have the compliancy aka tire volume and lack of front shock to deal with road disturbances. Road disturbances are magnified the faster you ride and therefore tire volume and suspension becomes more critical the faster you go. If you check out JohhnyNerdout channel, he builds a lot of 29er hardtails with BBSHD and I believe he is onto the best formula for those that 'like to pedal'. I use my e-roadbike for fitness riding. I contribute say 150 watts of human power to the pedals and the motor supplies the rest. There isn't a pro cyclist that can hold my wheel if I go full power and many have tried at over 30mph. So, that's my overview. I believe the success of your channel will be based upon the different bikes you build. Yes it will expensive, but you should be able to sell anything you build. Best of luck in your ebike journey. Its a great ride.
Nerdout mocks hub motors. I am thinking of getting a Grin All Axle front hub motor. After many hours of research, I think it would be the right choice for me.
@@carlyellison8498 Its his bias. I prefer mid drive as well. NPL has both. 🙂 I don't like all the weight over a single wheel. For a front hub, you don't have most of your weight over your drive wheel. Weight distribution on most bicycles is about 60% rear. I don't like an external controller. I prefer the torque multiplication of running the motor through the bicycle gearing. Good to have options. I am not a hub drive hater. I like them too. I like all ebikes as all have their place. Only way to know what you like...same for motorcycles, high end bicycles...anything...is to own it all and decide. Good luck with your build.
@@carlyellison8498 Carly, Grin is one of the best ebike companies in the business. I have bought from them. An engineering based company. Owner is brilliant. Johnny Nerdout has gotten pretty famous in ebike circles based upon mid drive, Bafang mostly but he has built a few CYC bikes too...but please know Johnny is very informed and worked as an ebike tech in an area with a lot of hills. Consumers would buy a hub motor bike and then take it to Johnny because they burned the motor out. That is where he developed his bias against hub drives which aren't very compatible to hilly riding in particular for simple reason, the gearing of the bike isn't in the equation of torque multiplication like it is with a mid drive. So if a heavy rider who doesn't push hard on the pedals in any gear simply relies on a low power hub motor to get them up a steep hill, they run the risk of frying the motor. Mid drives which are ridden...or should be more like a motorcycle with a transmission, if I go up a steep him in a low gear on my Bafang mid drive bike, it will climb like a billy goat because it uses the gears of the bike. All a hub motor does is push against the frame. If you climb hills Carly, be sure to ask Grin if they suggest a 'geared hub motor' versus a direct drive hub motor. A geared hub drive will climb better. Good luck and have fun.
@@lukewalker1051 - thanks again. I will look into their GMAC geared rear hub motor. I do like the mid-drives, but Bafangs won't fit my frame. CYC mid-drives are still an option. I really appreciate your experience and detailed responses - gives me more to ponder! I have another year to put something together, so it really helps.

E scooter great,it can be DIY wheel chair attachment, and i think some store was allowed it go inside store
It can be used as shopping cart, and you don't have to worry it is going to be steal
(if it was allowed to go inside building/store) if not,i'm not so sure,it depends🙂
Help me someone! been researching a tun
i need both.....
now im curious about Emotos vs ICE motos?
Emotos almost sound like a dirt bike rather than a roadway vehicle.
If it can do 50mph it’s above 750watts and that doesn’t make it an ebike to begin with…
Just discovered you today and I sure am glad I did. You have helped me greatly in making my final decision on buying or building an EBike.
Keep up the good work man!
Glad to help!
Ebike. Lectric 2.0✊🏿🚴♂️
And can be modified if you like speed.
I'll stick with my high end e-bike.
My E bike has 1500 W
Electric motorcycle have more voltage and high speed for freeway and more few city town but ebike more like run around city if one high power ebike would go on freeway that would be dope but need more voltage like around 200 volt or 300 volt the problem with the is law need to be to drive lesson
0 to 100 in seconds.
Don't do motorcycles man this is a bicycle channel! They are not the same animal 😂
One can be registered to be street legal and the other can't?
So let me explain the line of demarcation 'for me.'
No pedals?
I don't like all the weight over a single wheel.
@@lukewalker1051 - thank you!
