    Fantastic idea! I constructed removable perches and scrub them down with vinegar water once a week or so. Afterwards I rub them with an essential oil spray which includes peppermint, eucalyptus, citronella, and neem oil. I keep fresh dried herbs in my coop and spray the essential oils in all the corners and such. I am going to use this tape as a detection method! Thank you!

      Thank you!! Did you make a certain recipe of essential oils? I use herbs, as well.

    Paint the inside of your hen house (a few coats) and caulk up the seams/gaps/holes in the walls and floor.
    Use an exterior paint that will hold up to moisture. I also have used a clear coat waterproofing sealant in the US called FlexSeal - never had a mite issue in 7 years.

      I use silicon mastic on every crack I can find, that and diatomaceous earth and I don't have mites anymore.

    Worth a try, we have mites pretty bad right now, I know we have red mites, had them 3 years ago but also wondering if we have something else. There are bugs on me when I collect the eggs but it’s hot here. Last time I used PSP 2x and still had them after treating the coop and all the birds, it’s exhausting.

    Elector PSP & Permethrin .... Are products you can mix and spray .... Mites come out at nite usually to feast best time to spray the roost poles, walls ect. depending on the infestation ... Faster then the dbl sided tape method

    I'm beyond DONE, but my FAITH is strong but it has been so damn difficult. Living with this problem for SOOO long, and they are not just on my skin, but also under my skin. My feet are so bad, I can barely walk. Had an exterminator come out, and they told us to rid ourselves of any and all bird's nests or birds in the house or around it. I live in a very old house. Probably going to have to move out --😢😢

      Home fly spray and home Flea spray tends to have a chemical called c8 in it.... c8 is known has a forever chemical and once its in your ecosystem you can't get rid... whiles it works a treat at killing fleas etc, i wouldn't recommend having it anyway near anything you will eat.. eggs for example. it also causes birth defects.

      I’m willing to try anything! I have an 8x8x10 coop and I have red mites for the 3rd time! I can’t keep up! I’ve cleaned, pressure washed and painted the whole inside of the coop other than not painting the cieling. Elector PSP didn’t work, they were on the perch 2 weeks later after moving it to the other side of the property by itself. I use pine shavings and Saturday lime and I still find them in the bedding. Sticky tape helps but hasn’t eliminated them. I sprayed peppermint and tea tree all ver the coop and put garlic in the feed. DE did nothing!

    I liberally sprinkle DE in nesting boxes and take a handful and rub on perch. Ive tried various sprays ....50/50 bleach. .... pure white vinegar. ....cooking oil - still have mites :) The only very effective remedy is 1ml of I ver me ctin dripped on back of each chooks neck. Sadly its banned here in NZ incase ppl use it instead of the P hyser option :) But dble sided tape as a detector is a great idea. Cheers.

      You can still get that particular pour on for cattle in N.Z. (off label use for poultry) it was just the human version that was banned as it proved to be excellent in dealing with a certain human virus, but the powers that be didn't want that to happen as then their jab wouldn't have been required.

    • @madaxe4199
      @madaxe4199 ปีที่แล้ว

      First, clean the coop well. You can use a steam cleaner or hot water or a burner. You can also varnish or coat with oil and that will kill most. You can mix the cheapest edible oil and kerosene for lamp 1:1, but use a mask. Or you can whitewash the house with lime. You can do this even if you have already bought chickens, but after you let them out.

  • @berniebass3575
    @berniebass3575 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You're better off spraying all the wood with copper green and that'll take care of the problem because they have eggs and the eggs will hatch and it's just a reoccurring problem spray spray.

    Super idea, I will definitely try it. I've one hen who often refuses to perch and would therefore be at risk from mites. How do you encourage them to perch?

    • @thesmallholdingdiaries7833
      @thesmallholdingdiaries7833  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You cant in my experience. They'll sleep where they want. This is the one issue that isn't perfect with this method. It only really works with chickens that roost on a perch. But at least you'll drastically reduce the numbers of mites in the coop that may bother the one that sleeps in the nest box.

    I've been wondering if I have an lice issue because my chicks (8 wks) have gotten red skin around the beak and face...I don't see lice but what could cause this? They don't seem sick or lethargic at all but I'm concerned about the red color of the skin.

    • @thesmallholdingdiaries7833
      @thesmallholdingdiaries7833  ปีที่แล้ว

      In my experience they come from wild birds that enter the run / coop to steal the chickens food and water. They like warm moist conditions which is why they're so prevalent in the summer and this year the autumn has been mild and warm so far.

    • @aliciaspears7847

      I've heard that Orange oil kills them , but it has to get on them. Hard to spray effectively on all the nooks and crannies. Another good tip I got for prevention of fowl ticks is to caulk every seam/ joint which I'm going to do with the coop we're currently building. Then paint over all the surfaces

    Thank you for this very useful video. Tried the tape at each end of the perch and the next morning coved in mites.
    I only have a small coup so roof of tomorrow and power washing everything followed by steam cleaner in all crevices. Then a tip from another site to spray a mix of 2 parts water to one part cooking oil with a table spoon of washing up liquid. Plus a good sprinkling of DE. Will keep using the tape as an advance warning device.
    Have also dusted the birds and built them a dust bath of wood ash and soil mix.
