    Hi Bob, I fondly remember playing with you in Emil Palame's big band in Buffalo, back while we both were in college, you at Fredonia, me at SUNYA Buffalo. I occasionally played lead when Howie Shear couldn't make a rehearsal or show when he was going to grad school at Eastman. I'm so happy to see how well you've done in the biz. You sound as great as ever! I'm here to learn this techniques as I'm trying to improve my jazz soloing articulation. Wishing you continued great success!

    Is doodle tongue used mainly for only fast parts? When is it preferable over double tongue?

    • @TiimEKeePeR
      @TiimEKeePeR 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Professor Poison, Doodle tonguing is preferred over double tonguing when you're looking for the smoothest sound possible, such as in jazz improv. However, ultimately it's up to personal preference. Happy practicing! 😄

    How do you get your slide to keep up with your tongue?

    • @rayid2003
      @rayid2003 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      you must coordinate your slide movement with your air and tongue. Way easier said than done though.

    Try as I may, my sound is muddy when trying to doodle tongue or double tongue. I just can’t get a sharp attack🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

  • @TheStickyKey
    @TheStickyKey 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    I've tried my best but doodle tonguing seems impossible. I've just developed a soft enough double tongue so sound like it.

    • @steadilsr
      @steadilsr 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Spencer, as a guy who found it tough to do ANY double or triple tonguing, McChesney's method does have merit but it taks LOTS of TIME and DEDICATION to go back to basics of tonguing and understanding the natural breaks w the method. I still just use a fast single and try to use the breaks as much as I can

    Doodle Tonguing??? I'm simply amazed that most wind instrument players have yet to figure out there are more ways to articulate a sound than simply using the syllables Ta, Da, & La! Just try to imagine Ella skatin' on How High the Moon using only three syllables! It would be laughable, but still that's all that most wind instrument players know how to do. So I invented "Skat Tonguing". When I was a kid I learned how ventriloquists "throw their voices". Of course, they don't throw them at all, they simply form words without moving their lips - easy. I use the same approach to articulation. Simply use skat syllables while playing. No syllables are of limits. Any syllable you can sing can be played on a wind instrument. Roll over Arban.
