What a scene! Knowing the beggining... Cristophe Walltz and Mélanie Laurent are glorious in it! Waltz is sort of a Maestro in the scene. But Mélanie Laurent plays, as it was, an emotionally sensitive violin. Bravo!
Hans was such a troll in this scene, he's clearly toying with Shosanna as he clearly knows who she is but isn't letting her get any insight so she's full of uncertainty. I remember feeling extremely anxious during this scene as I was convinced Hans was gonna do something to her.
I just noticed a little detail I've never picked up on before. Hans pulls out the cigarettes, lights hers, lights his...stares at her... then he puts out his cigarette in the pastry. Even in the shot where he's staring at her and waiting...it's halfway smoked already. Was her staring at her for the *entire* time the cig burned?
Of course he knows, not only the milk and cream but also a Strudel which is an Austrian-German cuisine and German cigarettes, so Jewish girl like Shosanna would definitely hates everything that is German.
But how did he know? Was he having her followed? I don't remember that in the movie. I remember being confused as to how he knew she was the Jew girl he hunted years ago.
@@roguegamer8568 I think it's really jusr one of those movie mysteries. When he's staring at her and then just starts laughing like he forgot what he was going to say. The movie introduces him as being amazing at finding jews, so it's not far fetched that he knows who she is. Plus, at the end of the movie, he knew all about the Basterds' plan and he allows it to happen. So he probably knew what she was up to and since he knew rhe Nazis were going to lose the war, he saw this as his ticket out. Chess master.
@@Lukvader9apparently there was a shortage of certain goods that altered the standard recipe for cream, and these ingredients were replaced with pork products, which she can definitely not eat. Not sure how true this is, but that’s what I’ve heard
I think this scene is that hes basically baiting her into doing something rash as he knows she will, I think Landa is setting up the whole thing from the beginning in order to get his deal. While with Shoshanna he knows it wont work unless she goes along with it thinking shes pulled one over on him. I mean theres no reason why he has to inform her that the top brass is going to be there and that the "negro" shouldnt be there. I think its a brilliant piece of maneuvering and manipulation.
I don't think he recognizes her in this scene. How could he, he didn't get a good look at her in that opening scene. I'm sure she recognizes his name, which is why she's so frightened, but I don't see how he could know it's her.
i got this from a comment on another video. so the reason for being hesitant is her beliefs forbid her from eatting pork. During the war France was having a dairy shortage. so to make cream they made it out of pig lard.
The cream here is kosher, it would definitely be from cow's milk. (Strudel would not be served with any other kind.) The Strudel itself however very likely isn't, during that time puff pastry such as Strudel would have been made with pig lard, and that was commonly known.
He investigated about her before asking her.. So he knew that she is not what she pretends to be... That is why she left her alone there... He wanted to know more about her... He didnt really know it was Shoshana...in this scene He was trying to intimidate her...
The most delicious looking strudel ever captured on film.
He is the best actor in this movie
He is a phenomenal actor.
No doubt
He's very great but Brad Pitt takes the cake in this film

Hans, what a villian.
That is the most distressing piece of strudel in the world

Nah, the more logical explanation is continuity error
Right? He knows who she is...right? The milk, the cremé? He knows she's Shoshana

@@pingpong-dz6ti You can stiffen whipped cream with gelatine, so that may be it.
- I did have something else I wanted to ask you. "Are you hiding something?"
- "Yes I do."
- "That's all I wanted to know."
Immaculate acting by both
The shots of the whipped cream are so jarring.
Whipped cream is dairy. Hans first tried killing her at the dairy farm. Some connection there, maybe
He’s gone…
I know you’re scared, madame.
I’m scared too 🥹
What a fucking scene, amazing no matter how many times I've seen it
To me, this is tarantinos masterpiece. For the most part, I can take or leave the rest.

How can he know she is Shoshana? He didn't have a picture of her, and in the first scene he never saw her face, just saw her back while running.

Tarantino always has to have something to do with race in all his films and always kisses up to the jews....he "aint" that good ..
Of course he would, the owners of hollywood.
