From Storyboard to Animation (A Pro Guide to Stop-Motion)

  • In this video I break down my animation process- from the storyboarding of preproduction to the set design of production to the magical VFX work of postproduction. To demonstrate, I have documented my completion of a shot from my new film LEGO Minecraft: Night of the Nether (Part 1 is out). This video is not exactly a tutorial on the specifics of equipment and software, but you should be able to find plenty of great videos on TH-cam that cover that, such as the behind-the-scenes videos from Brotherhood Workshop.

From doing a little stop motion, I realize how hard it actually is lol. It requires you to brainstorm and plan beforehand, and have loads of patience. This video was super informative! Thanks brotha

For me, stop motion production and post are about the same but I tend to skip storyboard and script completely.
This is because I usually have the story in my head, the main idea, which I hold onto throughout the whole production. I write the script for longer projects tho.
I think that the only useful time to create a storyboard for stop motion projects is when you are working with other people. This helps other members of production to understand what the entire film is all about.
But when I do all the work alone, no storyboard is needed, since there is no one else working towards the same goal.

I’ve always struggled with two aspects: getting good, cinematic, yet colorful lighting and just trying new animating techniques in general; it takes me a lot of time just to learn a simple punch animation that’s different.
Watching stop motions, mainly Linkinpop13, as a kid inspired me to eventually make my own, and from then on I learned to develop a passion for VFX and now I know what career I want and am working for. I am forever in debt to what Brickfilms have done for me in my life.
always great to here from you, and we are awaiting the next continuation!

Thanks for making this! Your my favorite Lego Stop Motion Creator, and you've inspired me to do a Lego Stop Motion myself too! I'm doing Lego Minecraft, but I need to have a Village setting, and the actual Set that Lego made is over 800 dollars! So here is a video idea that I hope you can make: Could you please make a video of what pieces I need and how to build your MOC Villager House and Town Hall? If you do actually make that a video, then thank you.

Great information. I write a script and then go from there, as I can see it play out in my head. My first animation was like a comic strip and little movement (I chose dolls that have limited articulation). But I learned from watching, reading, and just trying new things. I'm still really choppy as I have a camera that cannot use stop motion software and so I simply wing it and try my best. What I found interesting was that the improvement from my first comic strip limited motion first video to my 5th is a huge jump. It takes time, patience and perseverance. Stop motion is so much fun and a rewarding hobby.

Next idea: Lego 🧟‍♂️ APOCALYPTIC BREAKDOWN SEASON 1
Episode 1: The Start of the Undead Pandemic
A man is seen coming out of his grave with a very damaged and bleeding face. Cut to a city, where a cafe worker is seen with her boyfriend. They suddenly hear a loud explosion and check to see the whole city in panic.
They also see the man from the start, with a lot more zombies. The zombies approach the cafe and some people, including the boyfriend, get bitten and die in the spot. The last scene in the episode is the cafe worker running while crying from the loss of her boyfriend, without knowing someone is watching her run into the woods.
    Episode 2: The Woodlows
The cafe worker is gasping for breath and checks clearly that there are no zombies in the woods, but soon find out the zombiefied man from episode 1 is chasing her. He soon gets shot and faints for a moment. We see that there is a man named Louie and he shot the zombie.
While running, he explains to the cafe worker that his name is Louie and that the zombies never die. The only way to kill them is to wait for them to starve for two years. Until then, they have to stay in “The Woodlands”, which is a place that used to be a homeless shelter that got transformed by people from the wilderness.
They predicted the zombie outbreak and decided not to go to the city, and Louie was in charge of rescuing people from the city. The episode ends as they reach the Woodlands, to see the people there called “The Woodlows”.
Episode 3: Time, Patience and Blood 🩸
Cut to an year later. The cafe worker’s name is revealed as “Jane” and she has been staying in the Woodlands for an year now. Her new boyfriend is now Louie, and they plan on getting married the next month. Suddenly, while they are eating breakfast, the rescue team comes back with 5 survivors from the city, Emmit, Jack, Lester, Anne Mary and Parker. It is revealed to us that Anne Mary has discovered a cure and begged the rescue team to rescue them. Cut to a month later, Louie and Jane are married and are friends with Anne Mary. Meanwhile the four men, Emmit, Parker, Lester and Jack have formed their own group called “The City Hounds”. Sounds more like a football team to me. People from the Woodlands are slowly moving to support The City Hounds, hearing that they will be raiding the city the next day. Although Louie suggests that they should wait until the next year, when the zombies starve to death, but they refuse saying that the food source is dirty, and soon, their food will run out.
People make weapons for the raid and start going out. The remaining people in the Woodlands is Anne Mary, Louie, Jane and the Rescue Team. Also 3 people named Jason, Tania and Howard. Their food source is running out, so they decide to hunt for a little bit. Luckily, they find undamaged cows and pigs, along with some carrots, potatoes and fresh water. The episode ends with a bad feeling of the raid going wrong, a feeling that the city hounds are losing the raid.
Episode 4 (Finale for Season 1): Time is running out, Impatience and Flesh 🩸 🧟
Anne Mary has now finished the cure. She plans to meet up with the city hounds and release the cure to the open, yet Louie and Mary are not a fan of the idea.
First of all, nobody knows if the city hounds are alive and secondly, they don’t know if the cure works or not. Anne Mary becomes very frustrated and leaves with the cure in the night, looking for the city hounds.
We see Anne Mary reaching g the city and finding Emmit, Parker and Jack, hiding in a corner, seeming frightened. When she asks what’s wrong, a zombified Lester bites her, which causes all the cures to splatter all over the place. Emmit manages to save one bottle of the cure, and the men are seen running back to the woodlands. We also see Anne Mary getting eaten alive by lots of zombies, just like in most zombie movies.
All the zombies storm to the trio of men, eventually almost catching up. Parker suddenly apologizes and says that he should never have asked them to raid the cities, before jumping into the storm of zombies to buy time for the two to run. The two push the gates of the Woodlands open and close and lock them right away, screaming like girls. Louie and Jane punch them in the face for being idiots. The four suddenly see the storm, hundreds of thousands of zombies coming to the gates. They barricade the entrance with spiked walls and cannons. Jason and Howard shoot at the zombies while Tania and Jack drop the remaining bombs to the zombies. Louie gets a bow and starts putting fire on the arrows. This burns lots of zombies to the ground. Emmit is a big wussy so he hides with lots of food and water in the basement. The zombies manage to make it through the gate and start overpowering Howard and Jason immediately. Howard and Jason retreat, letting the zombies detect Emmit, eventually biting the little man to death. Meanwhile, Louie knows that if they stay like this, they will all die anytime soon, so he asks Jane and Tania for the bombs and a jacket. They don’t get what he’s saying but does as he says anyways. Louie suddenly says that it was great knowing all of them, after stuffing over 30 bombs in his jacket. He says that he loves Jane before jumping into all the zombies, eventually killing him and all the zombies. Everyone is seen crying for Louie.
The next scene is a cut to 5 years later, there is a giant statue of Louie and The Woodlands has developed into a village. Jane is elected leader of the village, and Tania has released her own hit bakery. Howard and Jason are best friends now, they own a very big company called “HJ Corps: Woodlands”.
The first season ends as Jane talks about civilization developing again, and that there will not be further chaos.
The post credit scene shows a infected Anne Mary in the basement of HJ Corps, locked in a tube full of green liquid. She manages to break out, making us think that the zombie outbreak may start again.
