  • While not absolutely certain I believe this performance by John Prine and Steve Goodman was during The Philadelphia Folk Festival on April 7, 1973. They closed their performance with a medley of Hank Williams, Senior's fabulous hit songs. Information to the contrary is most welcome. I'm having a time identifying this performance.

They both appeared together at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis in the late 70's...suddenly Steve asked for a cowboy hat and boots from the audience. Some got thrown on stage and he put them on. They did another 40 minutes of Hank...they wore out the full house from clapping and cheering. A fun, wild night with these two guys...never saw a better concert in my life...

I first had a connection with Steve in Jan '73. Riding a motorcycle from Houston, Texas back to Ft. Lee, Va after Xmas leave. Somewhere in Alabama or Georgia I was slowly passing a loooong freight train riding about 200-300 yards north of the highway and realized I was singing "City of New Orleans". To this day 47 years later riding towards my next adventure I find myself singing that song not knowing if I'm singing it again or never stopped.

John Prine used to brag that he knew the first verse of every song Hank Williams ever wrote, jokingly he and Steve called it total partial total recall or total partial recall and then dissolve in giggles. Then they would straighten up and give a performance like this!

Used to see Stevie and Prime in tiny clubs in rural PA. What music they make.(made). They rarely did each others songs, back in the early 70's, except You Don't Have To Call Me Darlin, Darlin. Two uniquely talented troubadours with a hellofalot to say. We were just kids then, though we felt "fully grown up"!? My tears rolled on hearing of Steve's long anticipated (&dreaded) death. Prince's fairly recent death hit me where I live as well. Miss you bozos. See ya real soon, boys.

Can anyone out there help me?......my 63 year old memory isn't as good as it once was......
I was at the Philadelphia Folk Festival one summer evening specifically to see Jim Croce.......who was probably the headliner that night because he was being played on the radio regularly that summer.
Sitting there on the grassy slope....enjoying the earlier acts......and who do I see for the very first time is none other than John Prine.
I've been a fan of his ever since that warm August evening.

if the date of the recording is indeed April 7, 1973 then the show was not the Philadelphia Folk Festival which is held in August. From its inception until the mid 2010's the festival was held the last full weekend in August annualy and now has been moved to the 2nd weekend I believe to avoid conflicts with labor day - I know this as fact since I went to every PFF between 1967-1984 - My sister had many a birthday at the festival which is on Aug 29.

Saw "Singing Hank Williams Medley" & had to give a listen. GRESAT STUFF! I think Hank would tip his hat to this medley! Love those old movie clips, too. Is that a Dumont television in the beginning of the video?
