Instant Pot Sweet and Sour Spare Ribs Recipe
    Ingredients:
1 tablespoon cooking oil of choice
    4 pounds spare ribs
    1 small onion, sliced
    1/2 cup brown sugar
    1/2 cup rice vinegar
    1/2 cup shoyu
    1/2 cup water
    5 garlic cloves, minced
    1 inch ginger, sliced
1 can (20 ounces) pineapple chunks
    3 tablespoons cornstarch
    2 tablespoons water
    Directions:
    1. Set the Instant Pot to saute mode.
    2. Add oil and half of the spare ribs to the inner pot of the Instant Pot. Cook until browned. Remove the ribs and set aside.
    3. Add onions and saute until translucent. Then add the remainder of the spare ribs and cook until browned. Add the previously cooked ribs back to the Instant Pot.
    4. To a bowl add brown sugar, rice vinegar, shoyu, water, garlic, ginger, and the juice from the pineapple can. Do not add the pineapple chunks yet. Mix to combine and pour in to the Instant Pot.
    5. Place the lid on the Instant Pot and set to sealing.
    6. Cook on manual high pressure for 25 minutes. Allow 10 minutes natural pressure release then quick release.
    7. Mix the cornstarch and water then add it to the pot to help thicken the sauce.
    8. Stir in pineapple chunks and ENJOY!

I'm gonna try this one! I really like that you took the time to speak about pineapple not being Hawaiian. Drives all locals crazy & I feel like no one listens lol.

Aloha and MAHALO!! My grandparents brought this recipe back with them after they honeymooned in Hawai’i and .. well.. she changed the pork to beef ribs and her process was a little different.. she made a paste with the sauce ingredients except for the pineapple juice, coated the ribs with the paste, browned them, and then covered them with the pineapple juice always baked them in the oven… the pineapple was added on top in the last 20 minutes.. a major undertaking …but it was always what I asked for on my birthday, my favorite, thank you so much for sharing, I don’t have an instapot, but maybe one day I will.
YOU… are AMAZING with the way you explain everything clearly and concisely.. and then that little history segment, that was brilliant.. liked and subscribed! MAHALO!

Oh emmm geeee... THIS! Lol Im known for getting small kine irrated when something is called "Hawaiian" just because it has pineapple, so of course its now become a big joke to my haole husband and MIL. I once reminded him it was culture day at our sons daycare and he asked if he could just pack a pineapple in his bottle bag and call it a day🤦‍♀️.
Ok, since I actually dont have any on hand, does this for reals need the pineapple though? Also, and I may just not be remembering correctly from when my Grandma used to make this, but does anyone recall there being ketchup in this recipe before?
Aloha from FL and thanks for another great recipe from home, sis!

The pineapple adds a touch of sweet and tang. I like it with it. Never tried it without. If you try it let me know.
