When I was on a budget attending college, I'd get two dinners out of one can of Chili with beans by adding a can of kidney or pinto beans to stretch it into two big bowls for two night's dinners. Add a couple slices of garlic bread and a salad and you're good to go. Too bad he didn't add Denison's Chili with beans to his list, because it's really good, IMO.

Wolf Brand Chili with beans is my go-to canned chili. Hormel is the country's "#1 Chili" primarily because of the LONG recognition of the Hormel name and a much more extensive production and distribution network over time. It didn't hurt that they were originally a pork producer out of Chicago and sold 65% of their products, including Spam, to the US Government during WW II. Wolf Brand has pretty much always been JUST a chili producer.

@@lindawinegar1311 I find, living behind the granola curtain in Kaliforniastan, Stagg's at most of the major retailers. For example, I see it at ralphs, which might be Kroger where you live. I am pretty sure I've seen it at Stater Bros also. I will add price seemed to be an indicator at least in this comparison, as to which one tastes better. I think Stagg will be in line with Wolf. So it's been 5 months since you asked where you could find it. Did you ever find it and more importantly, did you try it? What'd you think?

I knew Hank Hill was onto something when he recommended Wolf Brand Chili. I bought it once for my chili dogs for that reason and noted it had the highest fat content. The flavor was good but I could beat it on texture with chili con carne chubs. I add cumin, chili powder, garlic and onion powder to them all anyway, so flavor for chili dogs is not an issue. Fat=Flavor.

I am 59 and a born and raised in Texas Texan. I was raised on Wolf brand chili and it used to taste great, until they sold out to Con-Agra Foods. It used to have a sweetness to it that is now gone. I have just recently discovered that the taste is different between the 15oz can and the 19oz can with the chili from the 19oz can tasting much more like it used to. I buy no beans chili I want all the chili in that can as they can put in to it. I'll add a can of pork and beans, which is delicious and makes more meals.

During my teen years in the mid-1970's frequently I would buy a can of Hormel Chili with Beans, dump it into a pot (microwaves didn't exist in my house then) add water to the can, swish it around to clean the can out, heat the chili up and eat it with about 4 - 5 slices of bread. I'm a bread guy so I loved dunking the bread into the soup of the chili. As a young adult in my 20's I would buy the Stagg brand chili. But I since haven't bought a can of chili in probably 30+ years; I enjoy making it for my family and co-workers.

@Jim Burnett yeah you put a little bit and it reduces any bitterness or sour, but the big food companies put in 15 grams of the sh1t in a can of chili, that's because they know we the consumer is addicted to sugar, and since like 1930 they've been adding more and more sugar to more and more things, when they see one product selling more than another simply because it has more sugar included, you pretty much have your business model right there and look what has happened...imagine that, sugar is in EV E R Y T H I N G. I'm addicted to it, you are too though, we all are 98% of us. Oh the healthcare industry has one hell of an insurance policy when all the food companies are pumping out sugar and trans fats that metabolize into sugars when ingested.

'Chili Man' is the best canned I've had in a few years, but since Wal Mart dropped them several months back, I can't find it anywhere. So I keep dry-packaged McCormick chili seasonings on hand to 'tighten up' whatever canned chili I have.

Thanks Larry! New Route for chilli - Restaurant Branded. I've tried all I can find, but by far the best is Lone Star. It is now available at my local King Soopers (Krogers) and also Safeway. Its sometimes sold now as Steakhouse Chilli. This is probably because Lone Star after screwing up their once great franchise for about 10 years, finally closed most of their restaurants and maybe even went bankrupt. But, the grocery store branded is excellent. I don't even make chilli anymore because this is so good.

Wolf chilli with or without beans makes for some good chilli dogs, when I can find it then if not Armour chili, And for those who know who Tex Ritter was Wolf Brand Chili was his favorite chili. His son acter John Ritter once said his father loved Wolf Brand so much he bought the company that made it.

I usually take Camble's' Roadhouse No-bean chili because it has a good amount of vegetables in it, but it's kind of watery so I'll mix it with Hormel No-bean chili.

I found a good canned chili from Steak n Shake a midwest fast food diner. The chiii is mild but you can also buy a bottle of theri pepper sause if you want some extra heat, You may be able to order it on the net if a diner isn't close to you.

I'm 45 and I've never eaten chilli out of a can but now I want to try the wolf brand. Reading the comments it looks like most folks recommend it.
I must say I love Wendy's chilli and if I can ever get my chilli the way I want it I'm gonna try to can my own.

I like Campbell's Chunky spicy chili. It's more of a soup than a spread and has just the right amount of kick to it.

I always doctor-up my canned chili with cumin, chipotle powder and liquid smoke. Then I like to garnish it with crushed tortilla chips, chopped onion, shredded cheese and sometimes a spoonful of sour cream and or Hatch (New Mexican) green chilis.

Chili with or without beans, I can swing either way but my favorite is Cowboy Posole, a can of chili mixed with a can of hominy.

My favorite chili is Bowl of Red seasoning and 80/20 ground beef. The recipe also calls for suet which I don't use. I brown the meat, mix in the seasoning and sever it over spaghetti with a couple of slices of cheese. However, on a chili dog, I prefer Hormel's chili no beans. I also like the soup-type chili where I mix in noodles.

As a native Texan, I can tell you that Texas chili does not have any beans. And, if I eat canned chili it is only Wolf Brand, however, I would never buy chili with beans. They are smart to cover the "with-beans" folks as well, of course, but in my ever so humble opinion, those cans should not be called "Authentic Texas chili."

I am a native Texan, born and raised and never lived anywhere else. I love beans in my chilli but only when I make it. I never eat chilli with beans from a can and IF I eat chilli from a can it's going to be Wolf Brand Chilli 👍
