How to Paint Farsight for Warhammer 40k! Beginner Friendly T'au tutorial! No Airbrush!

I could not have been happier with the new design for Commander Farsight alongside his Arks of Omen book and I was so excited to paint him when he arrived from @officialwarhammer ! His new armour is beautiful plus he's simple to paint! I used very few paints to achieve this result, as always you can pick and choose which parts of a tutorial to follow so if you want to add any extra touches go ahead! Farsight will be leading some T'au into battle very soon and I can't wait to see what he can do!

Grey Seer (zenithal)
(FAQ on Primers-I use Chaos Black as a solid coat, and Grey Seer is more of a lighter spray from above. This not only adds light and highlights to areas on the top of the model where the sun would hit them more, but also adds a minute texture to the model which the contrast paint clings to more easily!)

Can’t wait to get my hands on this one. It’s such a shame that both Farsight and Snikrot sold out so quickly. Fingers crossed that it doesn’t take too long for the solo release.
I doubt it will be long, they’ve just churning out new stuff lately, so hard to keep up! It’s a stunning model, even better seeing it in your hand than in photos etc.
Is there any chance there will be other boarding patrol? Or it’s over…?

Red has become my favorite color to paint lately, I definitely think your right that Farsight has a dark red armor Mephiston red is a good final layer or you could have done Wazdakka for a similar result. The new mini looks grear it's nice and sleek too they did a great job with the design.

Nice use of contrasts! I agree that Farsight and his forces should be darker. The material T'au use for their armor is Fio'tak, which is a "nano-crystalline metal alloy" so a metallic look on battlesuits is also possible.

I leave most of the stuff I paint red that dark as well. Especially my leagues of votan minis. Evil sunz is a little too fire engine red in my opinion.

I probably would have gone with a brighter red like Blood Angels or Baal red.
That’s fair I guess. I mean all the original schemes for farsight are a dark red it’s only this new scheme that wants to go brighter. I’m a fan of the darker tone myself.
Now, I don't play Tau. They're not exactly my cup of tea. But if they were, I'd play Farsight Enclaves. I enjoy the idea of a shooting heavy faction getting up close and personal to put a bunch of giant holes in their enemies. Also, commander Farsight being essentially samurai Big Boss from Metal Gear with a Gundam is an awesome idea. The new model also really leans into the samurai vibes and it's excellent.
GW has been on a binge of brightening everything up lately. Personally I do think it's a choice they made to make the box art pop out a little more. Wouldn't surprise me if they decide to push any future Blood Angels models towards Evil Suns Scarlett to keep them brighter than the rest. Personally I'll be sticking to a darker scheme.

Thank you for putting out this tutorial I honestly didn't like the GW one because the red was way too bright and tried to go for a more over the top look. Even then you're red isn't grim dark It just happens to be more tame and deep.

Yeah Farsight is a popular guy! We shouldn’t have to wait too long for the solo version though, they’re rolling out new stuff like crazy lately!
Hey! Loved the video! New to warhammer and just started my first army, tau.
This was my first time doing a follow along painting tutorial and my model turned out great! Best I've done so far. But when it got to the layering parts of apply the khorne red (base) and mephiston (base) all the shadowing contrast parts from the previous layers, especially the nuln oil details, got washed out.
Whats the proper method of layering? Did I need to water down the base paints used?
Hmmm I’m not sure what issue your meaning. Each time your layer it should be less and less each time as to show some of the previous colour.
You made a cracking job of that, is there a reason you don’t do edge highlights?
Time 😄 I paint way too many models to do edge highlighting and it’s not something I’m a fan of on certain models/colours either so I just don’t do it! Thanks so much, glad you liked the result!

Do you have a video where you explain your method of using contrast paints as base coats? Im really curious in trying this method. But i have been reluctant of using contrast paints in the pasts due to them potentially rubbing or chipping off easily?
I’ve done a lot of contrast paint tutorials, they’re just a really quick way of getting base colours down. I use a shade which helps seals them and then there’s regular paint layered over them as well. Once you put a wash over contrast paints it acts like a seal so they don’t rub off anyway!
@@MediocreHobbies thanks 😊 do you use a paint pot mixer/shaker for the contrast paint? And do you varnish your models at the end?
Missed this sorry! I just shake them by hand, they don't settle too much like thicker paints do! And I never varnish any of my models! The shade acts like a varnish/seal over the contrast paints, and then I just leave them after layering them!
Do you think Khorne Red would be a good substitute for the red you used?
It would be a brighter red but yes!

GW is really spoiling us lately and for a T'au FSE player this is really the cherry on the top. Isn't the classic FSE colour khorne red ?

Ye I think so. For sure darker then there currently scheme.
it does feel a bit weird how GW has made Blood Angels, Farsight Enclave, and Khorne marines share the same color scheme, it's like we now have 3 different kinds of Blood Angels (visually speaking). Having all these three factions in their own color scheme makes them feel more unique, there is so much variety in red for them to pick from to make each and every one of the "red" factions feel like they have their own colors.
With GW going brighter on their red factions I really hope we don't go back to the days of orange Blood Angels...

just curious how many coats of the flesh tearers red you put on him, and why you went back over the contrasts with the red and corvus black? on camera they looked pretty sweet to me
Flat panels and contrast sometimes have splotches left over so going over a normal paint helps reduce that visibility.

It’s just one coat and it’s the quickest way to apply basecoats to a model.
@@lachlankren4231 contrasts are also good for speed painting because they offer a base paint and shade so you pretty much work on highlights and clean up. I think mediocre hobbies here shows an excellent way of using contrasts that isn't just babies first painting.

First one way the original battle suit with some
Metal upgrades. Then a full resin version and now the beautiful plastic one.
unfortunately, GW doesn't include the farsight enclaves upgrades for infantry, like Firewarrior shoulder pads... but nice video! love your "simple" but very effective painting style
We’ll those upgrades were resin so not very good. I’d have loved a new plastic set with the box.
You can find some free 3D print files on the internet if you just put enclave shoulder pads.
100% agree, he should be dark red. Is there a reason why you didn't edge highlight the model? Not a criticism or anything just a genuine question.
I find it takes to much time. I try show people how to get models done fast so they can get through there backlogs. So simple and quick techniques.
I painted chaos black as primers. But when I started to paint at Flesh Tearers red, I knew somethings are wrong…Whenever I painted any contrast paint, those are just like black. I made a just black general.

Disappointed the model isn't multi pose like the normal commander.
If it wasn’t such a cool pose I’d agree but I’m not sure what else I’d do! I have already seen another creator modify the feet slightly so maybe we’ll all get some new ideas when it’s released!

Sold out in seconds everywhere, but TH-cam is full of freebee unboxings. GW really annoys me at this tactic honestly. Nice job though
