  • Documentary about George VI and his wife Elizabeth, King and Queen consort of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions. The story of Albert (his name before he became King) and Elizabeth, is one of goodness growing into greatness. In a short reign, just 14 years, they created an ideal of the British Royal Family. This documentary examines the legacy they built, a legacy that lives on in the way that their eldest daughter, Queen Elizabeth II, rules today.

Im romanian, and we have a king,Carol II,the cousin of Eduard VIII,who also left the throne for a woman, almost identical as W.Simpson.In real history books,i ve read that both cousins ( your Eduard and out Carol II),suffered from priapism . That s why,both of them were insclaved by two women who had some sexual skils.And Bertie was a stutterer, like out king Michael of Romania, who was his nephew. And they look alike. Same dinastic family, same problems. I really admire George VI,aș I admire out Michael I. They were both very strong characters, despite their stummering,very inteligent and so loving aș husbands and fathers.

      @pattimessenger6214 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Maybe unbelievable because he was born on the anniversary of Prince Albert’s death. The family was concerned about how Queen Victoria would feel toward the baby boy. They named him Albert, after his great grandfather. This is from Wikipedia:
      “Uncertain of how the Prince Consort's widow, Queen Victoria, would take the news of the birth, the Prince of Wales wrote to the Duke of York that the Queen had been "rather distressed". Two days later, he wrote again: "I really think it would gratify her if you yourself proposed the name Albert to her."[4]
      The Queen was mollified by the proposal to name the new baby Albert, and wrote to the Duchess of York: "I am all impatience to see the new one, born on such a sad day but rather more dear to me, especially as he will be called by that dear name which is a byword for all that is great and good”

      Ugh she was crowned QUEEN at 25 years old. 25!!!! Her kids were barely toddlers! I cant imagine being crowned queen at 25, after loosing your father so soon!!! Also, it wasnt until she was around 12 that her father was considered for the throne. Before she turned 12, King George was still just considered the "spare". It wasnt until her uncle abdicated that when she was age 12 her father became King. He was 41 years old when he took the throne. 41 years old with a 12 year old. Vs. a 25 year old with toddlers! In contrast her own children Anne and Charles were 5 and 3 at the time when she became Queen. She had less time with them when they were younger, unlike her father who raised her until she was 12 when he all of a sudden became King at 41, whereas she became Queen at 25.

      Europe was in the middle of a war. Granting asylum to the Romanovs carried a lot of dangerous political baggage including antagonizing the new Russian government. Monarchs would rather save their own family and put their own countries first. And unlike Russia's divine monarchy, UK's monarchy was constitutional so even if George V did want to save his cousins and their children, his decision should also meet the approval of the Parliament aka the people actually running the country. Unfortunately for the Romanovs, UK's King and the government chose to maintain tenuous peace in the country rather than giving their own people reasons to incite their own version of the Revolution in the middle of WWI.
      Even Kaiser Wilhelm II, who was third cousin to the Tsar and first cousin of the Tsarina, did not offer asylum despite having a better relationship with the Bolsheviks. The other European royalties were also trying to find ways to grant asylum, but they were also blocked by the same wall faced by UK and Germany. And nobody expected that the whole family will be executed.
      Maybe if Nicolas and Alexandra had been less foolish and less stubborn, and had actually listened to the Duma's urging to flee while there was still time, then the Imperial family wouldn't have been wiped out.
