I loved my ESPN when I was in high school. I'd wake up, shower, pour a bowl of cereal, and turn on ESPN. It didn't matter when I got the TV on, I would have one hour to watch a full episode for that day since it looped for several hours. Every game, and every major sport had the highlights from the night before. Eisen, Olbernmann, Patrick, Mayne, Kolber, and Scott (RIP) were the men and women who started my day.
Now it's nothing but hot takes and starting with 20 minutes of Lebron/Durant/Brady highlights and analysis. MLB season winding down with close races for the wild card? Too bad, there are NBA pre-season rumors about Lebron's ankle or his finger or his hurt feelings.
YT creators are better, faster, more informed, accurate, and connected to the community. I'd much rather support this content over any cooperate nonsense that is pumped out these days..

You are 100 percent right. In the 90s, I didn't know a single kid that didn't watch sportscaster daily.. don't forget craig Kilbourne. ESPN stopped being about sports and became a male version of the view

Not to mention, regardless of your politic views, that Keith Olbermann has taken a dive off the deep end. Even if that setup were back, I don't think anyone would want to hear his hot air being spewed. Even if he were on the opposite end. Just announce the scores and highlights please. ESPN needs to drop the 'celebrity culture' and politics.

  • @brandondeuber3903
    @brandondeuber3903 ปีที่แล้ว +151

Pat Mcafee's move to ESPN very much feels like a betrayal on everything the show was built on in the first place. It only started because he couldn't get into the closed door boys club that sports broadcasting is and did all of this despite the networks thinking he wasn't cut out for it. Joining them now feels like he's joining the people he was trying to destroy. From what I've seen, a lot of the current audience feels this way and a lot of his potential new viewers on ESPN are very vocal about their distaste for his show. I guess we'll see how it plays out but at this point it doesn't give me hope.

It’s not just disruptive technology. ESPN got too homogenous. Every show was built on the “black barber shop” format. All the shows were contentious. Their programming was 24 hours of arguing. They hired illiterate ex players. They forced gender diversity without regard to quality. They narrowed focus in each sport to a handful of marquis teams and superstar players. So it’s really a failure on the production and programming side. But just like in every business, when mistakes are made at the senior level, it’s the junior people who pay the price.

Overpaying rights fees to the NBA, NFL, etc, didn’t help. Tom Grossi’s 30 In 30 stadium tour for St. Jude was more real and compelling than any hot take from Screaming A. Smith. It’s no wonder that the organic, DIY content of 5PV, Grossi, Flemlo, etc, is better than the Embrace Debate shows. Related note: I’m (really) old enough to remember when ESPN did sports 24 hours a day, when they transitioned from doing a few hours in the evening from when they started.

Slight addendum: ESPN *might* be in some trouble. Not because of anything they're doing, or anything you and the rest of Clickbait are doing, but because Disney is utterly *hemorrhaging* money right now, and who knows what might be on the chopping block or up for sale soon. I'll spare the rant on how bad their output has been, but suffice to say, Lucasfilm, Pixar AND the MCU are all steadily producing more flops than successes anymore, which is part of the cause of this last batch of layoffs across the company. ESPN's on-air personality were just some of the better-known names, but Disney as a whole cut a LOT of jobs.

Exactly where did it all go wrong for espn?

Honestly the biggest surprise to me was shaking up their radio side of things again. They pushed Bart and Scott to ESPN NYC and finally gave Jason Fitz a mid day show at the start of the year and Key, Jay and Max was one of their most listened to shows. Meanwhile Greenie is never actually on his own show. It’s usually Canty and/or Carlin. Then they have a rotating cast of people hosting Canty and Carlin for the drive home show.

One other reason behind ESPN's decline is their self-inflicted wounds caused by 'dropping the ball' (pun intended) on major stories like the Bishop Sycamore H.S. "football team" scam. The sports TH-camrs picked up the pieces after ESPN's news department missed the chance to break what turned out to be a major story.

Jokic though has been putting up historically great seasons so it's hard to argue he shouldn't have been at the top of the discussion.

The problem with ESPN is they’ve adopted the same business model as the CNNs and Fox News’ of MSM and as a sports fan, I’ll admit that I find debate shows so frigging annoying for the following reasons.
    1. The points they argue are worthless.
    2. No one really changes their opinion despite if facts are being unveiled. The commentators never change their view even when their view is clearly proven wrong.
    3. Most of these debate shows argue the same damn topics over-and-over-and-over-and-over. It’s just like, “geez, how many times can you debate that LeBron is the GOAT or Dak Prescott is overrated…or Tom Brady is the best QB of all-time.” It just gets so damn old.
When I was in college, I watched ESPN a ton, but now, I actually prefer watching TH-cam sports content like yourself, Tom Grossi, Brandon Perna, UrinatingTree, FlemLo Raps, Mikerophone, JaguarGator, etc. For one, you guys make SEVERAL different types of videos, some interesting fact-based looks to goofy comedy bits, to streaming reaction to sports news. The best part…you guys are actually authentic with your takes. It doesn’t feel like two hollow sports commentators who are blindly arguing…you guys (Clickbait Sports) actually seem like genuine friends that would get beers together at your local tavern if you all didn’t live in different parts of the country and the most important part of all…you all RESPECT each other’s views, even if you don’t agree.
Now granted, there are some personalities that left ESPN and put together pretty good careers for themselves…like Dan Patrick, Colin Cowherd, Skip Bayless (unfortunately) and Shannon Sharpe. However, these guys made it big because they actually had (somewhat) likable personalities (aside from Skip…people just watch him because they can’t wait to see what stupid thing he argues next). A lot of the people who were released from ESPN I don’t think could make it on their own. I think a few could…Suzy Kolber seems like someone if she did start her own show/channel, she might be able to make it work…but nobody else aside from Keyshawn gives me the impression they could make it big on their own.
Stephen A. Smith actually had a pretty good take on this. He stated that the direction that ESPN is heading is they are getting rid of personalities and acquiring “products.” He even stated that he wants to turn himself into a product (which I’d argue he’s probably one of the few personalities at ESPN that could). Pat McAfee (as goofy as he is) is not a dumb guy. He knows ESPN needs his show more than he needs ESPN. If the Pat McAfee Show fails on ESPN due to the crude behavior of its talent, they know they can go back to TH-cam and bounce back.
The fact of the matter is due to streaming, independent content creators have far more power now and aren’t beholden to a large network to regulate their content. If nothing else, it’s actually BETTER to be a smaller indie content creator because YOU control your channel and your content. You don’t have directors and producers telling you how to do your job.
