The world consumes a huge amount of chicken meat with barely a thought for the process. We decided to raise some chickens for meat & in this video, the time has come to process them.
Rather than show too much detail, I want to explore the emotional cost of raising our own birds and look at the ethics of industrial scale production of meat in general.
We will never look at supermarket chicken in its aseptic plastic wrap in the same way, but we learned a lot.
This video contains some scenes that some may find upsetting.
We have tried to show the reality of the process without including too many images, but to provide proper context it has been necessary to be honest and transparent about the process and that has meant including some content that will be flagged in case you wish to look away.
Many videos gloss over the emotional
    reality of meat production.
In going through the process we have re-evaluated our attitude to the topic and our views on the whole subject.
After much planning, we left England 2 years ago to build a new life in beautiful rural Portugal #SerraDaEstrela - It's not been easy, but it has been wonderful.
Thank you so much for watching #HowardsPortugal
I don't really know much about bees or farming or fruit, but we are trying to become less reliant on the shops and to grow more of our own produce, so we thought we'd give it all a try!
Ever wondered what would happen if you just sold up & moved out?
We did, so we sold up & moved out! These videos are snapshots of what it is like to rebuild.

Self-raised and self-processed meat sure changes the appreciation of having a chicken dinner! Great video!

My parents used to process their own chicken meat. They were organically fed, had a good life and did not go to waste.

I think that the point about them having a good life is most important...thanks for taking the time to comment!

Great video, I used to do this with my bantams when I was about 10 or 11. Not sure if it would be so easy now. Chicken was quite a luxury meal in the early 1960s.

Funny how it seems to get harder as one gets older!!

You were very determinedly brave. I couldn't do that myself. Although I do eat chicken, I will look at supermarket poultry with even more scepticism now and maybe try to find a decent butcher more often .

Thank you! It did take a lot to build up to it & yes, if you can find a decent butcher that is probably better than using the supermarket!

Bom día, would it help to have some olive oil on your hands while plucking? And I agree, if you cannot think about how an animal was raised and killed, you should not eat meat.
