  • We typically run a small batch of Cornish Cross meat birds in our back yard once a year. In this video I am covering everything you need to know to raise your own meat chickens from start to finish. I hope you enjoy it.

Hang a pvc pipe about inch off ground in back to push chicks forward so you don't break any legs

I commend you for staying power regarding plucking. I only do 10 birds at a time and process 5 one week and 5 the next - and I shelled out the ~400 for a plucker. It would take me about 40 minutes per bird minimum without it. Now it's about 5-7 from dispatch to fridge. ~15 per bird if I part them on the spot. Less than 2 hours total including cleanup is a lot better than the 5 hours it took before just to get them all in the fridge: so not including cleanup or parting in that case. A plucker is more of a game changer than many realize until they use one. I could not imagine plucking 10 by hand, never mind 26.

It's best to withdraw food at least 12 hours before butchering. It's much easier to remove the crop when it's empty. Definitely invest in a chicken plucker LoL.... makes the process go so much cleaner and quicker. Plucking is tedious but, if it's something you enjoy doing than happy plucking ❤

Great tip. We remove food atleast 24 hours which cleans out their digestive track with our fowl. Blessings

I justified the cost by saving a part of my sanity. Get a plucker, lol.

Definitely the better way to pluck 30 seconds and every feather is gone , it was the first piece of equipment i bought my brother thought I was crazy for spending the money until he seen it in action lol

Great video, the only thing, but maybe you don't eat them is the gizzards, my hubby loves them floured & fried. You do need to cut around the outside of the gizzard to empty out the stones and anything else they've consumed, like tarp grommets LOL! Then you peel off the wrinkly thick piece on the inside and you are left with a nice piece of meat for you or pup. Thank you for this video, I seem to have trouble freeing up the crop so it will come out with the rest of the insides. I love your videos -- they are very informative!!!

We have several chickens at about 3 1/2 months, and have been hoping to see a good instructional video. Thanks, Chris (and Mrs. Chris!)

For my chicken and guinea I put four bricks underneath my pan which helps to level it to a degree but when they scratch ground there is less debris that ends up in the pan. I will also put a few limbs around it for them to gain better access if it seems to high. Godbless

I gather black walnut every Fall, in Southwest Missouri. I've tried so many boots... usually either I do them in, or they do me in, before the month is over (talking TONS of walnuts, not just a couple yards). I used your discount after checking some more reviews and receieved the first two of 3 styles I ordered, yesterday. I bought 2 styles for walnuts, one for cooler temps. The cooler weather Explorer's fit perfectly with plenty of cushion and no foot sweat. I wore them ALL DAY! Just found your channel researching for my future urban homestead in my locality, and you've already earned your keep!
