      Hi - yes, we are now in beatiful rural Portugal! It is a bit late for cuttings (or a bit early!) but I am no expert...you are probably best waiting until autumn now, wait for dormancy & take a load of cuttings from this year's growth...put them in sandy soil in a fairly sheltered plave outdoors & some should reward you. Cheers!

    Evening Howard, how's it going up there in the blue sky. Hope you are harvesting your veg now as my spuds are going over as about finished, carrots are huge and podding peas all week with one more crop left to pick. More fruit than have seen in years, plenty of Bramleys everywhere. We have rain coming it says over the next 4 days, is just a matter of which day will be light and which heavy, but as you can see the way the cloud has been gathering over the last 3 days I think will be very heavy at some point. At least will save me watering, which is what have been doing all afternoon.

    Evening Howard, your carrots are bit behind, have been eating mine for the last 4 weeks and new spuds. Have great pile of peas sat waiting for podding, but leave for morning as worn out today in the heat 82 this aft. No queen the hive will die. I see the old lady has lost her white hair at last, that's the latest I have seen snow go here since I arrived in 20. Could have done with those bees here in Feb when the plumbs were all out as it turned cold and got very little as too cold for the natural bees to work in. No problem of late as a massive crop of apples an brambles and my citrus is looking ok, but still satsumas in full bloom so can't tell yet how many of them there will be. My Persimmons is also covered i bloom so might get to try them as well.

      Great to hear that you are enjoying your produce - I think that the altitude difference accounts for a big difference in our crop times although we also have loads of delicious peas...Inam going to get a beekeeper friend to "lend" me a comb of brood but first I need to see if the queen cup goes anywhere - you can usually tell a queenless hive as the bees get a bit feisty! All the best!

      @@howardsportugal I wouldn't have thought 600ft would make that much difference, a week maybe, but that is all. I used to buy hives in from Koppert when I was growing for a living back in Blighty. A standard hive lasted 12 weeks whilst a hive with a queen would last all summer. Not honey bees just the common bumble bee, but made a big difference to the crop especially when the bee population was shrinking.

    Evening Howard, you enjoying this English weather as i making things slow but heavy as the water that is going on is doing a lot of good. I see it's been 75 in western Scotland , typical in May as I was there nearly 8 years and a better place to grow things than it was in England as most things were ready 2 weeks even 3 sometimes in front of my farm in the Vale of York.. It has to turn next week as could do a bit of heat now to speed up the citrus which has been flowering for over 2 weeks now. Have got a massive crop of apples especially Bramleys so don't forget to pop in and get some when they are ready.I did a bit of watering last week, did the whole garden took me 3 hours with the hosepipe, expecting warmer weather that they said was coming and am still waiting for it so not done again yet. I wouldn't have bought the rotavator as it doesn't drive it's self so you are walking on what you have done. A Howard Gem or a Honda 800 will do the job far better as both are self propelled and you walk at the side just to steady it. I had the Honda when in Scotland, very useful in the greenhouses.

      Definitely, treading in ground you'vd just turned over isn't helpful...hadn't heard of those machines. It remains rather chilly - the fire is still lit most evemings!

    Homesteading lessons: always know where your buried services are, be sure to store materials out of the way, take the advice of your cat in good grace! Good luck with the growing season, Howard, totally understand the need to reduce video output as you get busier on the land. Look forward to seeing your progress 🌳

      Thank you! The best advice I can give is to get out here, travel around and see what is available...It is very hard if not impossible to do things remotely. Any land you buy MUST have water!

      I am in the mountains over 2,000 ft up and I lifted my first spuds on April 28, carrots a week later and now am picking peas. So you must have been very late planting.

    HELLO. GAVEGADOR FERNAO DE MAGALHAES WAS THE FIRST EUROPEAN TO ARRIVE IN THE PACIFIC, WHO BAPTIZED HIM WITH THAT NAME! 500 YEARS AGO, THE STRAIT OF MAGALLAES HAS HIS NAME AS A TRIBUTE, WHEN A SAILOR ASKED ABOUT THE SHAPE OF THE EARTH, HE ANSWERED, AND THOUGH, I'M SICK OF SEEING ITS REFLECTIVE IMAGE ON THE MOON. HOWEVER, TV PROGRAMS ARE STILL MADE ABOUT YOUR FORMAT! IT WAS PROVEN 500 YEARS AGO THAT THE EARTH IS ROUND!

    Don't you have mains sewage up there. So why not install a soak away is the next best thing to mains and easy to install as you have the fall for it. All my previous 3 small holdings had a soak away which worked very well.

    • @howardsportugal
      @howardsportugal หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, you are right that we could install a soakaway & we may well do that in future...this is a stop-gap & much quicker to build! Cheers from the hill!

    Hope you enjoyed today's thunderstorm as we got about an inch, but much warmer to come this week upto 80 they say and plenty sun. Hope so as need it to make all these apples fill up as have had a very good set in the cooler weather.

    • @howardsportugal
      @howardsportugal หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, bring on the sun! Have had excellent fruit set, cherries, apples, peaches etc, but the cold nights have retarded the veg...the ground is saturated & the grass is growing faster than I can cut it. If it turns warm soon, we'll have a boon year.
