    L series is the most reliable Rover engine. I don't mean it as a joke that this engine is also unreliable. This engine is generally very reliable

    1996 was a good year for Rover. New 200, 400,600,800 (getting on a bit), MGF plus Discovery, defender, Range Rover and soon to be launched freelander. If only it was still owed by BAe and in partnership with Honda.

      Developed by Rover with some consultancy work by Ricardo as far as I was aware as a lowly experimental engine tester. An excellent engine.

      As far as I'm aware it was designed by a UK company called powertrain Ltd in association with rover and its associated partners. As for being capable when tuned I can give testiment to that I own a late type obd2 l series with sdi's, darkicedesigns over pipe, de cat, itg filter in a zs airbox, mafam and a manual boost controller it's no slouch put it that way very aggressive power delivery for such a humble design. The only problem you do get is it wants to blow its head off quite literally 🙈.

      @@stephenbates8370 Yeah, i maxed the turbo on my 25, and my old gasket is saying goodbye, starting to build pressure in the hoses. I think i will try to retorque the bolts again, in case they stretched while i gather everything to rebuild it. Are there any stronger bolts?

    67 MPG is really good for an old diesel using older engine technology

      Truth be told I have never got that kind of figure even in the zr but there is no denying it can be frugal even when capable of beast mode lol 😂

      @@stephenbates8370 ive done a acurate measure of 65 mpg with tyres at 42 psi and cheap tyres, now im on rainsport tyres it does 55 mpg

    I had one of these in a nightfire red 600. I took it to over 400k, then my brother in law took it to 550k until it went in under the scrappage scheme.

    Errr… was this not just the a Honda Accord diesel…. A bit unsure about the rover guys spending hours on it..

      Honda didn’t make their own Diesel engine until the 2.2 CDTi N series which came into the market around 2003 or maybe 2004. They supplied petrol engines to rover whenever they were in partnership but I don’t know much about that.

    Hilarious...Rover management dismissed diesels just when all other manufacturers were going full steam into it. Their reasoning ? We're a prestige brand and we don't have dirty , noisy engines. A late friend was one of those who quietly worked under the radar with Perkins keeping it alive. It never got the full development it deserved. The last of these engines were more powerfull , quieter and more economical than their equivalent BMW , Merc or VW engines. But too late to go in a car. Same old story of opportunity theirs for the taking but blinkered management team thinking. It was the only time I saw him angry , he took early retirement soon after .
