What is TVG?? (Time Variable Gain Explained!)

  • In this video I explain what Time Variable Gain is (TVG) and how it effects your sonar picture!
    A lot of people will tell you to set it at "Low" or "Off", but not many people can explain WHY!
    There's not a ton of information out there to explain this vaguely covered topic, so I found as much as I could and tried to make sense of it. Different brands of fish finders might calculate TVG a little bit differently or have more customization on how to adjust it, but in the end, they all produce similar results.
    I want to add this disclaimer: The information presented in this video is MY interpretation of the vague info I could find online. That said, it makes sense to me, and I think it's pretty accurate.

    Great video! Companies that produce these units do a poor job of explaining their features. Very helpful!

      Thanks so much! It is a shame that great companies like Garmin missed the mark when it comes to documentation on this in particular

    Does tvg work the same with chirp?

    • @jeffdicks
      @jeffdicks  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Now thats a good question and I don't know the answer. In theory I can't see why it would work any different. All CHIRP does is use multiple frequencies within a certain range to draw the image on your screen, so my guess is that yes, it would work the same with CHIRP.

      Thanks so much! I'm happy to hear from someone who would have much more experience in that field than I approve of the video! I have quite a bit of RF experience, but it's not from a marine point of view, but I guess RF is RF is RF!
