    I've also found compression helps the sound of electric guitar, when the distortion sound being used by the guitarist is too aggressive. A moderate ratio compression at lower threshold helps take the edge off.

    • @GLBProductions
      @GLBProductions  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, a small amount of compression will often benefit just about any source in live sound. Talking to the guitarist can also help ;)

    i jut stumbled on ur channel and found this so useful. i learnt some of ur quick tips while using the same mixer. however, i need to ask as i couldn't find contents on using a cardriod condenser mic.. we are using out own mic apart from the pre sets which i believe is for the dynamic mic.. so now i can't get the mixer to max the output of condenser which i want it to be covering more thsan 250degree directional sound as i have 3 choristers on 1 mic.. how do i work this on the above mixer? i use a simple zoom mixer so never had such a problem

      The maximum amount of Gain Before Feedback available in any given venue is dependent on many factors, not just the mixer itself.

    I too have a question re: feedback and compression. 99 per cent of the time when you hear feedback it is coming through the monitors .. Like someone dropping a mic down too close to the speakers. We never had a problem with feedback in the monitors in our band until the sound man would try to compress the vocalist. Is there something about the signal path in a mixer that could cause this? He would compress by inserting on the vocal channel.

    • @GLBProductions
      @GLBProductions  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Definitely sounds like a case of too much make up gain. Look at the compressor he is using and look for a knob labelled 'gain' - it should be set at 0dB (ie no make up gain) and the gain should be made up using the console fader. Recording engineers use the gain knob on the compressor because they do not have to deal with mics and speakers in the same space, but in live sound we need to handle this a bit differently.

    • @obergssin
      @obergssin 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know this is old but it may help someone out... It also sounds like the "Sent" to the stage monitors is being sent "Post Fade" or "Post Eq"... If you change it to "Pre Dyn (Dynamics)" it shouldn't affect the monitors.

    GLB, excellent and timely series. Our church is just transitioning to an Si 3. I'm going to get all our sound guys to watch this! One question, I have skimmed thru all 3 vids looking for how to send the L/R mix to a LiveStream switcher/encoder. I think that MTX is probably the way to go and indeed have got the L/R assigned (not sure how I did it) to a couple of outputs on MTX1 but the output level is a bit too hot. Can you advise how to trim it a little? (And, indeed if this is the way to go? - I looked round the back for the usual tape out co-axes - nothing of course!) Blessings to you - great job.

    • @GLBProductions
      @GLBProductions  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Patrick, thanks for the comment! Yes using a matrix would be the easiest way to create a copy of the LR mix. If the level is too hot just bring down the relevant matrix master (on layer D) 6-10dB, depending on how much the signal needs to be reduced :) Hope your team is getting to know the new mixer well!

    • @randallpatrickc
      @randallpatrickc 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry to be so thick (I only get to see the mixer on Sundays pre-service) but how do I identify the matrix master? Is that one of the two "master faders" bottom right? The L/R and Mono ones? I'm guessing it would be glowing yellow?

    • @GLBProductions
      @GLBProductions  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's right - when you're in bus mode with the relevant matrix send button on the top row depressed it will be the MONO/SEL fader on the extreme right hand side, glowing orange not yellow. However when you are in mix mode on layer D, it will be one of four matrix masters that are glowing orange. The L&R fader is always for L&R and is not included in the faderglow system.

    Very good lesson, I'm new in digital mixers, my expression is 3 fader L&R glow light is red in all times, channel 1 is always on, even if the on bottom & master volume & L&R is off, also only one channel sounds (15 or 16, not sure witch one), the other one does heard like equalized and has low volume, I bought the mixer used, do you recommended to do a factory reset? Please, help me. Thank you.

    Will compression make feedback better or worse?

    • @JCH9312
      @JCH9312 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It can make it worse. If there is a small amount of feedback, the compression will bring it up, more or less amplifying (probably poor choice of vocab) the feedback. However, I'm not quite sure it can make it better, other than maybe allowing you to reduce the gain. Hopefully someone comes by with a little more knowledge answers that part.

    • @GLBProductions
      @GLBProductions  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's a great question, thanks for asking.
      Compression by itself will not cause feedback. If a mic is feeding back without compression, adding compression can sometimes prevent the feedback by reducing the signal below the point at which it begins to feed back - this is particularly true when you're using a high ratio and/or low threshold.
      Caleb remember that compression does NOT make a signal louder - it reduces the signal's dynamic range in accordance with the threshold and ratio settings as explained in the video. What DOES make the signal louder is the process of make up gain - most rackmount compressors have a gain knob, or it can be done using the channel fader. This is where you 'add back' the gain reduction that the compressor caused, effectively raising the average level of the signal. This can cause feedback when the compressor is not active, because it is still gain, and gain is ultimately what causes feedback.
      Looks like I'll have to do a video on this topic too ;)

    • @critiquestudios7741
      @critiquestudios7741 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      My reason for asking is I'm a mix engineer bt Ive been doing a lot of Live work recently, and takling feed back with gain staging. Im thinking the best way to handle feedback with a dynamic processor is a Gate right? Just catch the feedback when its low and Gate it out? Then maybe compress afterwards if a compressor is needed.... What do you think? Great videos by the way! Thanks

    • @GLBProductions
      @GLBProductions  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dealing with feedback begins with minimising the amount of system gain needed ie make sure the source is as close to the mic as possible. After that work on physical solutions such as speaker/mic positioning, using directional mics etc. You should be able to get the mic to be feedback free without the use of a gate/compressor - these then act as backups in case things change during the show, which they always do ;)

    When you save and load a show, what exactly is getting loaded and saved? The user guide says "The Show contains all console settings, plus the Cuelist."
    My issue is that it appears that the sound settings (gains, gate, comp, eq, etc.) are not saved or recalled when saving or loading a Show. We have multiple sound booth operators at our church, and it drives me crazy when some people mess with some of these settings. How do I get back to my same EXACT settings for the entire console? I'm wondering if this is part of the Cue list (which I haven't learned yet...)???

    • @GLBProductions
      @GLBProductions  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      A show saves a snapshot of the entire mixer, including all the channel and fader settings. If your mixer is not working this way something is wrong - either there's a fault with the board or you are not doing the saving and recalling process correctly.

    • @jambam6176
