Soundcraft Si Expression 1 mixer training part one

  • The first in a series of training videos featuring the Soundcraft Si Expression 1 digital mixing console.
    This training session was conducted for a church that was transitioning from a Yamaha MG series analog mixer to the Soundcraft Si Expression. I took the opportunity to compare the two mixers and demonstrate the similarities and differences - as a result this training has a slightly different flavour to the series I have uploaded in the past which just featured the new mixer.
    I hope that this series will give those who are considering making the switch to digital mixing a good idea of the similarities and differences between the two types of consoles.

    Very good direction and instruction, the big problem is the camera person was not able to follow the lead of the instructor. Many times the instructor referred to faders or knobs, and the camera did not focus on where he was referencing. Otherwise, the instructor did an excellent job of explaining and describing the functionality of each component.

    I can get an aux mix out fine but am having trouble with sending the L/R mix to a Matrix. I think my problem is in the LCD window screen (with the XLR sockets and check marks). I can headphone monitor the MTX ok but bugger all comes out the two XLR outs I assign. The manual is a bit sparse here - can you step me through how to assign Outs to a MTX mix please? Would be eternally grateful!

    • @GLBProductions
      @GLBProductions  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Randall, I don't have the mixer in front of me at the moment, but working from memory, the procedure is to press one of the matrix bus buttons eg MTX1, MTX2 etc and then go to the appropriate fader layer in order to determine what is sent to that matrix. You then need to go to the appropriate page on the touchscreen to set up which physical outputs you want to patch that matrix to. You're right that the mixer is really not helpful in this area.
      If you can monitor the matrix in the headphones but get no physical output then double check your patching and especially check easy to miss things like having the master fader up and switched ON - this one gets me all the time!
      This is an interesting issue so I will confirm these directions the next time I'm around this particular mixer.

    • @GLBProductions

      You'll probably just get a bunch of noise as a digital output is not compatible with an analog input.

    Minor question in your sequence list. Making connects should come before powering up the system, is this correct? Even in established systems, any new connects need to be done before powering up the system, am I correct in this train of thought?

    • @GLBProductions
      @GLBProductions  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes Dennis in an ideal world all connections should be made/broken with the power off. However if the system is already on when you arrive, check that the channel you are connecting to is muted and that the phantom power is turned off.

    What about the master fader? That action comes before the gain and fader and adjustments..

    • @GLBProductions
      @GLBProductions  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Master fader should be placed at 0dB most of the time. However remember that its position does not affect the gain-setting operation as that is done pre-fader.

    what if i want a soundcraft ui series connected soundcraft si expression 1? how do i do that. i saw a data lan port on both mixers. but I'm confuse how do i link my ui to si mixer? my plan is to use the ui series 16 as my voice mixer channel for the singers , backup singers, for the host and master of ceremony. Then the my main mixer soundcraft si expression will be my instruments channel , pc Spotify player and karaoke player. how do i all do that?

    • @GLBProductions
      @GLBProductions  ปีที่แล้ว

      If you want to use the network ports to connect these mixers you need to contact soundcraft to determine the correct protocol to use. Otherwise you can connect them as you would normal analog mixers.

    Hey Bruno, I have got a question to you as you are quite familiar with teaching Sound-Engineering. In my local church we are only four people in the "sound-team" so its really hard to get someone for every service. As the inofficial leader of the team I am responsible for training any newcomers. Sadly I have no Idea where to start when these guys have no Idea about sound reinforcement so far and are supposed to handle our Qu24 any time soon. Do you have some kind of concept for a training session? I guess it would be easy to teach them an easy procedure, but I don´t feel that is the right way. I want them to know how things work and how to react, when unexpected things happen.

    • @GLBProductions
      @GLBProductions  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Joni thanks for getting in touch. Are you looking for training specifically on the Qu24 or on doing sound in general?

    • @giesi1997
      @giesi1997 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, both ;)
      Our technicians should know how Soundreinforcement works, but after all they should be able handle our setup (i guess thats the point of the whole story)

    Hello..
    I have expression 2 in my Church.
    I have a question.
    I don't want the effects to go to my 2 monitors which are connected through mix 5 and Mix 7.
    Effects are already coming out through main in house speaks.
    I want to control it in selected monitors

    • @GLBProductions

      So you would press Mix 5, locate the aux return faders (blue faderglow) on the appropriate layer) and make sure they are all the way down. Then repeat this for mix 7.

    How much gain should you use for a live church setting, isn't 2 oclock too much

    • @GLBProductions
      @GLBProductions  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The amount of gain needed is related to the level of the incoming signal - lower level signals need more, higher level signals need less. Likewise what is too much or too little gain depends on whether or not the signal has been raised to line level - there is no 'correct' or 'standard' amount of gain for any given channel.

    that was cool. The only thing I didn't like where the ghetto hardware store rack bolts and the metal washers being used on the mixers rack wings. XD The correct style washers (plastic or material) and bolts are cheep as chips. Looking forward to part 2.

    • @GLBProductions

      I'll let our installer know that you don't approve of his choice of hardware ;)

    • @jouebien
      @jouebien 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's in a rode case that is designed to be moved around - you go punting in metal washers and your going to scratch up the rack wings. Scratches lead to rust and rust leads to a premature electronics failure which leads to hate and hate well leads to the dark side!
      All joking aside. Using incorrect rack bolts is also not a good idea either.
      The rack it's in might fall over, be stored length ways in a truck and transported to another venue or in general not looked after properly (as is the case with most churches who aren't employing someone who knows what they are doing) - you skim on the bolts holding the mixer in and you won't have a mixer when it comes loose in transit.
