Yes, I certainly agree! The little ancient house that we bought, took us 7 unplanned years to renovate and restaurate, what, with a newborn and a 6 year old and both working. Now, the house has got at least another 100 years in it now....every time we opened up a wall , a ceiling or a floor, it had to come out and be completely renewed But at least,we kept it´s ancient character
It is possible you two! My husband and I are almost finished restoring a Victorian house in the USA. Im Irish. When we got here the house had NOTHING no toilets, no electric no water. I just got done learning how to reshingle a roof! You can do it!
Poor Emily! I thought she was going to cry when she saw that wonky wall 😢 You've got this girls. We know you can do and you've got each other and together you're stronger. Lovely to see both Summer and AJ are now 'free' 😊
I just wanted u two know how much joy and happiness you bring to my life. I lost my partner over a year ago. He left suddenly and I have grieved a full year today. Please keep being awesome in a world where sometimes people can be so cruel and unacceptable of people with different lifestyle choices. I love how much you two love each other and help each other grow. Thanks for being yous and I look forward to more videos. ❤😊❤
Save all those rocks, even the little ones. Lay all out from large to small so they are easy to see for rebuilding any part of the cottage that needs it. Keep a pile of all the small bits for infill.
My 100+ year old cabin could not be salvaged after five months of demolition. I had no choice but to rebuild from scratch. 80 days later I have built, mostly by myself (I was 63 then) a cozy tiny house (384 sq ft) which I totally love. You can do this! I'm cheering for you from the North East Kingdom in Vermont!
Nothing like renovation surprises…also known as The Money Pit. Sometimes old, is just old. But you ladies will make it yours because it will be a labor of your love. Happy birthday, Emily!
As someone who has renovated an old house, that came up with some shocking surprises, one room at a time is easier on the soul! Good luck, it’s going to be gorgeous, one day! ❤

We bought an old Chapel the roof was falling in, no floor, the outside walls needed tying in with four steel girders and tie bars. We moved into a caravan with a baby. It took us 3 years to get it habitable and probably another 3 to finish it. We too did all the work ourselves. So easy when you are young.😊
Omg that was the quickest 36 mins ever. I look forward to your videos and they whizz past. I have to watch them twice. You guys are amazing. My husband and I did this about 20 years ago to our French home. It was back breaking but so worth it. Love the channel so much thank you Lou and Em xx

Stone walls always start really thick at the bottom and narrow to the top. It creates stability. Breeze blocks are an easy/lazy way to fix a stone wall. Ive my fingers crossed it isn’t as bad as it looks
Hello to you both. My friend sent me a link to your video with your traumatic time with AJ…which followed days after my partner and I had to let go of our beautiful greyhound as he had acute pancreatitis and could not recover. The pain of hiss loss is excruciating and watching you two and AJ was a pain and worry that Sue and I could really relate to. Thankfully AJ has come through and I hope he has many years of good health ahead. As for you two…total respect and admiration re your renovation. What skills. Brave and just amazing. I so love physical labor, I could watch it for hours. Much admiration to you two adventurous ladies - from my place in Illinois, USA. I know you will ultimately have a perfect home, built on a sturdy foundation of love. ❤❤❤
If I don't see Emily being rolled around the garden in that tyre next week then I shall be very disappointed lol!!!!! I was willing her to get in it lol. Well done ladies you really are doing such a fab job xxxxx
Bury a coin for luck somewhere in the cottage walls, I have found several over the years. One TH-camr wrote “We are trying to contact you about your loan” under a new carpet.

The most brilliant bit in this video, is where your dog doesn't know whether he still lives in a van, or whether he has a whole new plot of land to roam and explore, and to play in. And, weirdly, you two are maybe at that same stage - worried about a wall which may fall down, or which you'll have to do something about. I'd say this is a good mental and physical space to be in. The van is still there, as your home from the past, but soon you'll move into this lovely old house, and maybe the wall will always be threatening to fall down, but it can still be your new treasured space. Keep going. It's going to be fine.
We bought our cottage built in 1752 and as we discovered had been bodged ever since .. We had to gut it room by room , I was pulling wallpaper off in the bedroom and all the plaster instantly fell off , horse hair and all , and there were massive holes in the walls . Anyway we redid it ourselves and it took 5 years !! Damned hard work and I taught myself so many different trades I swear I could work on any building site now and we were in our late 50’s , so it can be done . ❤
As you are neighbours, I thought maybe Sam of The Irish Homestead, could give you some advice regarding the inside wall of the cottage ? He had to replace lintels. Great that you cleared the hay barn. You work very hard girls and you make AJ and Summer very happy there .Love the outdoor 'salon' well done! Happy Belated Birthday Emily xxx
Thank you and them guys are doing a cracking job, Louis is ok with the lintels it’s more the stability of the walls and what we can do and as great as Sam is we need an engineer with that
I've been patiently waiting for the day Summer gets to roam around the homestead - and here it is! My heart goes out to both of you for the aching muscles. I bet you're gonna go through a ton of work gloves too. Good luck on this massive project, girls!
A one inch gap at the bottom and 9 inch gap at the top either means the opposite wall is also at the same angle or.... there's a 9 inch gap somewhere... You're doing the right thing in getting an engineer in. Whatever the outcome, don't lose the faith. You have got this.

Was he in trouble, half a ton of rubble landed on the top of his dome. So Charlie and me had another cuppa tea And then we went home.
I watch the Irish homestead and he found the same issue...the upper walls being pushed out. He figured it was the weight of the roof trusses doing it. So maybe swing by Sam and Bec and and have a chat. They have the same problem. Never panic, each problem is part of the fun...and honestly, you got it covered.
My Gran had her house renovated and I can remember we kept finding St.Christopher metals underneath old flooring or in the attic crawlspace..The odd thing is that our family was not Catholic and my Gran had lived in that house for over 50 years..I just remembered that while watching the two of you tear out your old walls..I am looking forward to seeing how beautiful your little cottage turns out to be when you are finished remodeling it..Take Care.❤️
St.Christopher the patron saint of one who travels, maybe if your Gran didn’t you’re meant to get a campervan yourself or go on a great journey sometime?
Regarding the office room, note that you might want to colour the limestone plaster in whatever colour you want the inside of the room to be. If you paint on the limestone plaster then it is quite likely that the plaster will come off after some years. At least that is what is happening in the house built in 1901 that I live in. What happens is that moisture containing salt is traveling from the ground into the wall. If there is paint on the plaster then the salt crystallizes between the stone and the plaster making the plaster come loose. If there is no paint then the salt will crystallize on the surface of the plaster and one can use a vacuum cleaner to remove it. The method using coloured limestone plaster was the recommendation from a specialist.
I admire your work ethic! If I had that enormous tire, I would lie it down on a chosen place, fill it with earth and grow flowers or spices for the kitchen in it! It would look amazing!
This is up there with my favorite you tube channels you girls, Tj, summer make me smile laugh , you both took it in youre stride " big job, youre attuide to life we should all take a segment of it to make our life a better place thank you for letting us all take part in yourd wonderful life xxxx❤❤❤❤

It was never going to be easy but you two are such legends that I know irrespective of the challenges ahead you will overcome them with a brew and a laugh, massive love to you both x
Happy Birthday Emily! I kind of think this wasn't the surprise you wanted on your day. However, i believe that you two, with your determination will fix it in one way or another. I have to say that your bravery to take on a task that you never never done before is admirable. Louise, your enthusiasm is 90 % of the tools you need! Always voting for you guys, crack on!
Re: Ticks - Here in tick-central (Massachusetts) we always had a problem with ticks. Seresto collar significantly decreased the number of ticks the dogs got crawling on them, but putting up a 4" livestock fence (like yours, but bigger holes) has made them all but disappear. On current dog, she's 5.5 years old and has never had a tick attach (and has only brought in one). So, I think the fence makes all the difference in keeping wild critters from passing through and dropping them. Hope you stay tick-free! *fingers-crossed*
Happy birthday Emily! Hope the wall issues stay more of a challenge than a disaster, but I know you'll figure it out with the right help! Love seeing Summer outside without leash and exploring! Love your humor, both of you!
Your genuine portrayal of 'We bought our DREAM HOME.. it's FALLING DOWN! Old stone cottage renovation.' is incredibly compelling. Your dedication to restoring a piece of history and overcoming challenges with grace and determination is truly inspiring. Your journey resonates deeply with those who value preservation and perseverance. And I am Floating Village Life
There’s no fun in a straightforward cottage renovation project 😅 Your attitude to overcoming problems is inspiring and something we can all learn from! Enjoyed the video and Happy Birthday Emily!
If you are going lime render the office I suggest investigating the french method of using a compressor to spray the lime onto the walls. It is then roughly troweled. Afterwards it can be lime plastered normally. Escape to rural France used this method on his small cottage. It's a method we will use on some of our outbuildings when I get to that stage.
I love you two, I’m watching this on “Father’s Day” and I just want to sort all your problems out for you. I know you’ll get through all these problems, and everything will work out for you. Stay strong and happy. Chris ❤
My cat brings ticks in onto my bedroom…it’s such a joy seeing them crawling toward me up the bed, just getting ready to pounce 😮 Dead mice are an even bigger treat. I’m beside myself with joy every time it happens…
Ticks are the only creepy crawly I'm scared of, Lyme disease. Being in Ireland we don't have ones that want to kill you but that's close enough for me!
Enjoyed this week's episode, a little tip for loading a skip. Use cheat boards at the front low side and back to give extra height to fill to. You can then fill to full height of the sides. So long as it is flat level with the sides you will be fine. Cheat boards are bits of wood you are throwing away which you can stack on the front to raise the height. Hope that helps, skips are expensive 😊
Sloping walls are normal for old rubble stone houses in Ireland and UK, the walls were tapered partly as it provided a wide base on the ground rather than deep foundations. Amazing that all these stud walls didn't have insulation. As for the office, include some underfloor insulation and underloor heating, with bare walls you'll appreciate the underflooring heating. Where you have ivy, first cut a 12inch gap at the base of walls, that will kill it higher up, do try to remove it, but be careful where it has grown through walls, so it may be wise to chemically kill it first. I use repeated spraying with a mixture of glyphosate (only buy from agricultural outlets as it's much cheaper) and washing up liquid. The washing up liquid helps breakthrough the waxiness of the ivy leaves. Although glyposate is used by farmers I would only use it away from areas animals frequent and well away from anywhere you or othes may want may to grow things, it is supposed to break down in the soil, but I prefer not to risk it. Indeed I have left areas of ground unplanted for several years while I work to remove weeds and pervasive grasses like scutch. Lastly, have you inspected the barn to ensure no corrugated tin is likely to flay away? If it's going to take years to renovate the house I would think of creating a protected living space in the end of the barn.
Hi, thank you, some great tips. Yeah we will be doing some welding on the barn for sure so we have a better area for the long time it’s going to take to do the Renos 😂🤦🏻♀️
Gosh, that’s a surprise - a few thoughts… Do you know if there are any foundations under those walls? Lots of the old stone houses are built wider at the base than the top, I wonder if that could be a solution - remove the cement blocks stick some wall ties in and build up the outside at the same but opposite angle tapering towards the top. The idea is to keep the vertical loading in the centre third of the wall. Also, a structural engineer with experience in traditional stone construction would be good, or a stone mason even. Most structural engineers used to concrete or steel would balk at this.
I bet you've been glad you did all that strength work while you were waiting for the purchase to go through! You guys aren't going to have any problems keeping fit now!! I am in awe of how hard you both work. Love watching your channel and seeing your progress. You've done an INCREDIBLE amount already!
Lou you need to surprise Emily with a long weekend get away for her Birthday. It'll be good for you too. You don't have to go far ... nice park up in the woods by water sounds perfect🥰
Parkour Cat!! I love it! So wonderful to see her adventuring. I have a good feeling about this, Darlings! I can't tell yez how excited I am to follow your work. Peace and love from a very friggin' rainy Scotland!
I hope the engineer who comes lets you film him or her when they're doing the survey of that wall. It would be really interesting to hear their opinions and watch them pointing things out as they tell you about them!
Im renovating a 200 y.o house, and every room is liking opening pandoras box 😅 Ive cried a lot....ive hysterically laughed a lot due to going mental with stress. One step at a time and at least you have the van as an oasis! You guys got this!! Cheering you on from Tennessee 🎉❤
I think you guys need a construction size skip. A really big one! Save the tin for the barn roof. You could repaint that huge tire, fill it full of dirt and make it into a huge planter!?!
You're doing a great job stick with it no matter what problems occur there will always be a solution. I renovated a 200 year old farm house here in co Longford 25 years ago with lots of problems but always a solution. Loving the channel watching from day one. A metal weed eater on your strimmer will clear those brambles. Good luck ❤❤
It's always interesting to see the shortcuts and bodge jobs that people do to finish a property, and then the next person comes along to renovate and discovers all the hidden gems. Great TH-cam material if nothing else! House history is so interesting. Loving this series of videos!
You two are amazing. I can't believe how much you get done each day. I hope that you're taking all of the ivy off of everything. It's horrible for the buildings and the trees. Gets in the cracks and breaks the stones apart and kills trees and smothers native vegetation. Good luck with everything and stay safe. Maybe you need to add hard hats when working on the inside with all of the stuff falling all over the place. Love seeing AJ and Summer so happy. Take care.
You two should have set yourselves an easy introduction to cottage rebuilding by designing and building a five bedroom mansion with a fountain and an attached granny flat, would have been much easier !
Total respect to you girls , in the past ripped houses apart from the insides and yeah the problems behind. But think positive as you both do it will all turn out an amazing house when done 👍.
@@tiddlywinks456 You might be on to something..Thank You for your reply..
Thanks
I admire your work ethic! If I had that enormous tire, I would lie it down on a chosen place, fill it with earth and grow flowers or spices for the kitchen in it! It would look amazing!
We LOVE Summer! She seemed pretty chill with her new adventure playground.
Happy birthday Emily!

We will definitely get there in the end 😀 and thank you
You know I loved this episode. May I make a suggestion? You can do hour long shows. We'd wat h because it's awesome and interesting a fun.
😂 the lives are over an hour long 😀
Re: Ticks - Here in tick-central (Massachusetts) we always had a problem with ticks.
Thank you, I have faith in us 😀
Proper renovation jobs like this are exciting to watch, really looking forward to seeing the lime stuff. Wonderful updates :D
You two always make me smile. 😁 What a beautiful relationship you have! 💗
Oh, and HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Emily!!! 🥳 My younger son’s birthday is the 13th, and I see similarities between you two. Love you fun Geminis! 😍
Aw thanks and thank you 🎉
Your genuine portrayal of 'We bought our DREAM HOME.. it's FALLING DOWN!
Oh def not 😂 thanks
If you are going lime render the office I suggest investigating the french method of using a compressor to spray the lime onto the walls. It is then roughly troweled. Afterwards it can be lime plastered normally. Escape to rural France used this method on his small cottage. It's a method we will use on some of our outbuildings when I get to that stage.
I love you two, I’m watching this on “Father’s Day” and I just want to sort all your problems out for you. I know you’ll get through all these problems, and everything will work out for you. Stay strong and happy. Chris ❤
As thank you 🙂
I love how you 2 always giggles ❤. Your videos always bring a smile to my face. Thank you
My cat brings ticks in onto my bedroom…it’s such a joy seeing them crawling toward me up the bed, just getting ready to pounce 😮 Dead mice are an even bigger treat. I’m beside myself with joy every time it happens…
Oh it’s the worst ain’t it 😫
Ticks are the only creepy crawly I'm scared of, Lyme disease.
You are both young and enthusiastic you will get your dream cottage in time and it will be amazing ❤
Keep going girls, it’s only just begun. In the end you will be sooo pleased and proud of yourselves. All the best M
100% this cottage is going to look amazing when you’ve finished it - no doubt at all
Sloping walls are normal for old rubble stone houses in Ireland and UK, the walls were tapered partly as it provided a wide base on the ground rather than deep foundations.
Soon as we know more we will let you guys know what the plan is 🙂
I bet you've been glad you did all that strength work while you were waiting for the purchase to go through!
Brilliant video. Your both working so hard and its all paying off especially for AJ and Summer x
I'm just imagining the people that did all that plasterboarding etc watching you.
me too , all that money spent sorting the old girl out !
@@janissteadman285 or covering up problems
Same 😂
Your relentless hard work, optimism and cheerfulness is inspiring and as always, very entertaining too. Well done Lou & Emily.
Parkour Cat!! I love it! So wonderful to see her adventuring. I have a good feeling about this, Darlings! I can't tell yez how excited I am to follow your work.
Peace and love from a very friggin' rainy Scotland!
She has been loving it 😀🐈⬛
I like it that you both work together as a team, love the progress your making with the Cottage.
Loving your sitting area. You are both doing a cracking job tidying and making it homely
Hi guys, you are allowed to burn wood and foliage on St Johns eve on the 23rd. From a fellow Uk - Ireland old cottage renovator.
🎂HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO EMILY!
You'll get there, I love the can do attitude and you two have it in abundance, take time but a labour of love always does.
Some people use old doors for dinning room tables, and coffee tables.
And headboards
It's always interesting to see the shortcuts and bodge jobs that people do to finish a property, and then the next person comes along to renovate and discovers all the hidden gems. Great TH-cam material if nothing else! House history is so interesting. Loving this series of videos!
Adding the organic material to the garbage seems like a really good idea to me. Compost for the dumps🤷♀️👌
Take care.
“The Flaccid Candle” sounds like the name of the pub down the road…
😂😂
😂😂
Bit like … The Flakey Tart 😂
Yay!! Summer gets to go out now! That's wonderful. Happy Birthday Emily.
You two should have set yourselves an easy introduction to cottage rebuilding by designing and building a five bedroom mansion with a fountain and an attached granny flat, would have been much easier !
😂😂 where would the fun and hard work be in that 😂
The Irish traveller community will help you out. No problem.
take all the metal, boss!!! :D
Total respect to you girls , in the past ripped houses apart from the insides and yeah the problems behind. But think positive as you both do it will all turn out an amazing house when done 👍.
Thanks for taking us all on your journey with this missive project, think all your followers enjoy and look forward to every week video.
Take care all 🌷❤️
"The NEXy Day" is here to stay 😂
Happy birthday Emily ❤️ hope you enjoyed the coffee and cake. Not a great beginning to the day. You have the sweetest attitude ever and this will serve you well during this renovation.
