  • Fiber Optic Lollipop Tester - amzn.to/3IqRaYz
    Hey guys, today's video is some old footage from last year that I put together. In this episode I show how to test the MMI system and find the problem. 99% of the time, it is due to a receiver in the back of the car that is not completing the fiber optic loop. When there is a break in this loop, it will shut the whole system down causing the screen to turn off. This was a very cheap repair!
    To find the cause of the issue, order the fiber optic lollipop connector and then disconnect the fiber optic connector on the back of each receiver. Once you find the problem, the screen will power on. You can leave the lollipop installed for temporary fix while waiting for your used part ordered from Ebay. Your screen will remain powered on once the fiber optic loop is complete.

    • @Mechani_Cole
      @Mechani_Cole  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Even if it's built in, the fiber optic loop needs to be tested to confirm that it's actually receiving signal. If there is a break anywhere in the fiber optics system then it won't work. The tester completes the loop, bypassing the amp (or other modules) to confirm its good

    Literally just ordered my piece! Thank you for the link as well. One day my battery died and all of a sudden I started dealing with this issue. And just like you the mechanics are talking about $2000. But I just couldn’t understand why it just stopped working because my battery died and had to jump my car. I didn’t spill a drink on the hardware or anything major. Just doesn’t add up, so hopefully it fixes the issue somewhere with maybe one bad part that isn’t too much to fix.

    Hey man my amp on an 09 S5 got damaged from water going through the trunk, I ordered a very similar replacement just a 2011 amp instead of a 2009, my local mechanic "who identified it being the amp which was the problem by using the same method as you) attempted to code it for me but says he needed a special type of system which he didn't have, I took it to audi dealership and they could also not code it because one of the modules but somehow didn't want to get further into it because I had originally paid an hour labor just for them to try to code it. I noticed there is a fiber optic cable laying there with a red light pulsing out of it. I don't see another module it could be connected to so this unused fiber optic plug with the red light pulsing that is just sitting there unused off the harness is causing a break and preventing the stereo MMI from turning on?

    • @Mechani_Cole
      @Mechani_Cole  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not usually no. The red light you are seeing is the fiber optic signal. It appears red.
      You can always try plugging it with the tester and see if that fixes it. The tester completes the loop, which needs to be a complete circuit.

    Hey bud great video. Having some intermittent issues with my screen not turning on, particularly in cold weather. Same thing buttons don't light up either. If it's intermittent, is it most likely still the tuner? Or is there a connection I can fit tighter or dry out if there's moisture?

    • @Mechani_Cole
      @Mechani_Cole  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question, and thanks for the comment!
      First thing I would check for is moisture damage on/in any of the units. The MMI controller located near the gear shifter could also be bad. I replaced the circuit board pretty easy on mine first thinking that was the issue when it wasn't. But drinks get spilled there easily due to the cup holder being located right there next to it. So very much a possibility too!

    i was able to isolate my problem in being my amplifier, yes that is a shock! haha. anyway, do you know if the power supply must be connected to the amp if you are checking the loop? i took my amp apart and cleaned off all of the corrosion on the inside, and am ready to test and see if it works. However, the power connector is a real pain to plug in and unplug. Without plugging it in, just plugging the fiber optic loop in, will that make the connection??

    • @Mechani_Cole
      @Mechani_Cole  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question! I don't believe power needs to be hooked up. Main reason is all the fiber optic lollipop tester is for is to complete the fiber optic loop. When the amp or something fails, the fiber optic loop is broken somewhere causing the whole system not to operate. The loop by passes whatever module is dead by connecting the broken fiber optic link if that makes sense.
      So if you unplug your amp, plug in the tester, and you see your radio and other things work, then you most likely need a new amp. Best place is ebay, hope that answered your question🤙🏼

      I have a similar problem, no screen at all, not even briefly. I have just tested the optical loop for the four components in the trunk. One by one, I replaced a component by a lollypop bypass, nothing changed. The CD changer in the glove compartment has its lights on, but I cannot make it do anything else except a long hold on the main button to turn the lights off. So, it may be the board itself, since no lights are there, or the screen (doubtful) since all the buttons are affected, or possibly the CD changer (not clear why the screen doesn't come up at all).

I took it to Audi, firstly they said it was the unit where the buttons are and they replaced it. this didnt fix the issue and now they are saying its the module in the boot, like in yours. however, as you can imagine, Audi want lots of $$$$ for this. do you think replacing this module will fix my issue? even though everything is working?

      @@Mechani_Cole no, not yet. I went back to Audi as I recalled the service manager called the part in the boot the 5F unit and upon looking online, the 5F unit is the main mmi unit in the centre console. So I queried this with Audi and they very very sheepishly said I was correct. So I am now looking into changing the main unit but I have been told that I either need to get one with the exact part number or get a similar one but it would need to be coded by Audi. So I am a little stuck as I don’t really trust what Audi are telling me. They had changed the control module at a cost of over £1000 and they now want an additional £3500 for the main unit, which I kindly told them to get lost. Hey @mechincole how do you going about doing this for a Audi A7?

    • @Mechani_Cole
      @Mechani_Cole  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Similar process. Locate the modules in your A7 (Google super helpful here), then remove the bracket holding them in.
      Remove the fiber optic connection on 1, plug in lolipop tester in link to the wire harness. Then turn the car on and see if any difference.
      Repeat this process until something changes on each module. Once you find which plug makes a connection with tester, then remove and replace module.
      You can also leave the tester in as a temporary solution.
      Basically the fiber optic tester creates a complete loop in the fiber optic signal. When a module fails, the connection is broken/interruption. The connecter completes the circuit to by pass the module is all that makes sense.
      Best of luck, thanks for watching🤙🏼

    • @Mechani_Cole
      @Mechani_Cole  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Unplug the connector from the back of the module, then insert loop into the end of the plug that you just removed. Then turn on to see if any changes. If it turns on or changes when plugged in, then that is your faulty module.
      There is 4 or 5 modules;
      - AM/FM Receiver
      - Navigation
      - CD Player
      - Amplifier
      Test each plug. The tool completes the fiber optic loop, if one of these modules is failed then it breaks the loop, therefore shutting power down.
      Hope this helps🤙🏼
