I was in the cathedral, and Kenny's speech was very, very well received. In fact, he had a prolonged clapping without it going to a standing ovation, all in the respect of Alex Salmond. Outside when the ministerial car came to pick Swinney up there was a very different atmosphere among the crowd with loud chants of independence. He hurried away from the cathedral When Kenny came loud cheers greeted him. What a difference. A great day and a great service Christina his niece and his friend the KC also spoke very well. I was honoured to be there.

Very well done Kenny, you encapsulated everything!!!!
I remember when I was a young quinie and Alex Salmond formed his first government. He didn’t have a majority but I remember thinking he will make it work and he more than did!!
When the independence referendum came i voted Yes because whatever situation we end up in, our country would have been okay because we had Alex Salmond.
Alex Salmond made us believe not just on a false belief but he knew our country was more than capable.

Having read the speech, I was impressed by Kenny's delivery. No surprise there. He spelt out the challenge.

A befitting tribute to Alex would be to take back the SNP from the home rulers Brits, and careerists that inhabit the party at present!. Our day will come, Alex, Scotland will be free!

Far too much bickering between the different Indy parties, that’s exactly what the unionists want, it’s time we came together to get our freedom 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Great tribute to Alex, great to hear the Burns quote at the end. I am totally turned off of Scottish Independence due to Nik Sturgeon's tyranny, after Salmond mentored her and gave her whole career opportunity, what a stab in the back - Sturgeon shows her total lack of class. But I will take a look at this new Alba party, have been away from Scottish politics for a long time. Christina Hendry is very good, Alex's niece I believe. We need to get beyond socialism, particularly international socialism, and get with Trump, then something can maybe start to happen - we don't need to carry the world's troubles on our back whilst we struggle to feed our own children and put a heater on.

Sadly at a memorial service those outside embarrassed themselves by booing and hurling insults "Traitor" at John Swinney, I don't do political parties per se as IMO they are cults of one form or another, although I do support the cause of Independence, this was a memorial service for Alex Salmond, an opportunity for family, friends, previous close associates and political enemies to reflect and pay their respects, Swinney was attending as FM and in a personal capacity of knowing Alex Salmond for 30 years accompanied by his wife who has MS, this was inappropriate disrespectful behaviour those who indulged in it need to reflect on their anger and hatred drove that them to hurl abuse at a memorial service

It was & is also the right of the general public stood outside to show and voice their feelings.
Whether you agree with them or not, they have that right.
None of *us know exactly why John Swinney was invited to attend the actual service but it is likely that it was because those closest to Alex felt that inviting the present FM of our nation was the correct thing to do from a purely procedural/official point of view, and in that case what Alex would have wanted..
I have absolutely no doubt that all of Alex's nearest and dearest - AND John Swinney - were fully aware that if Swinney accepted the invitation that at least some of people who gathered outside St Giles to show their respect and admiration for Alex Salmond and support for his family and friends would also let Mr Swinney know how they felt about *him.
      So, they did.
John Swinney made the choice to attend. If he was truly unaware that there was a liklihood of him getting the reception he got from some of the voting public outwith St Giles, then he is indeed a fool.

It wasn't the general public they know how to conduct themselves at a public memorial service being televised, it was a small angry group of political party activists however, as you state it was their right to embarrass themselves and lose support for Alba, self defeating idiocy IMO as it is my right to call it out
Its none of your business why John Swinney was attending you don't own Alex Salmond, it wasn't your "right" to decide the guest list, forgiveness is a wonderful gift many funerals/memorials see acts of reunion, none us of can know the emotions of those who once worked closely over 30 years with Alex Salmond attending a memorial service, clearly given Alex Salmond stature as a prominent Scottish public figure and previous position as First Minster of Scotland it was fitting that John Swinney paid his respects on behalf of the Scottish Govt and I'm sure on a personal capacity, he was attending with his wife who has MS
As you say I agree that those close to Alex Salmond and the members of Alba party have negative views to say the least about John Swinney, and John Swinney would have been aware, however, it was a memorial service for goodness sake it was not the time or place to voice those opinions, would Alex himself would have wanted what occurred outside ?
Kenny MacAskill made a fine passionate speech on behalf of his lifelong friend and political ally, overall the service was well done a fitting memorial, it was dreadful a minority couldn't behave with respect and decency outside

Well done to the idiots that were shouting at swinny a bloody disgrace you people need to grow up you do more for the unionists than you do for independence . Nothing but petty childish behaviour

I quit my founder membership of the party because of Kenny's rancid, unapologetic antisemitism. It galls me he's the acting party chief. It should be Neall Hanvey.

Alba was virtually irrelevant under Salmond. He at least was a recognisable figure who would always have something quotable for the media. Without Salmond Alba are totally irrelevant. MacAskill could only muster 638 votes in the general election, the Independent got more votes. Sad as his death is, it is good for the SNP. For Alba, he is irreplaceable
