Despite never being a scottish nationalist myself, Alex Salmond's achievements cannot be understated. When I was born there was no Scottish parliament at all, any interests particular to Scotland were almost considered inconsequential to English MPs who dominated Westminster and who seemed to see Scotland just as some remote county like Cornwall, with no important interests of its own. Salmond was a big part of the process that showed to the rest of the UK and to the whole world that Scotland is not a county, but a country which deserves to be known, which has its own interests, and can stand on its own two legs. I think this will be his legacy and I think it will never be forgotten

He weakened Scotland by helping to remove Scottish influence at UK government level. Both Labour and the Tories used to have powerful Scottish figures in their cabinets and shadow cabinets, but the rise of the SNP reduced Scotland’s voice to mere background noise.

@thegreat_I_am You've just proved the point that the English parties don't respect Scotland. So are you saying we should just vote for whatever England wants?
Scotland has rejected the cons time and time again, but that's who we get lumbered with because England votes them in.
BTW, we've seen it a multitude of times where Labour in Scotland or the tories in Scotland have been contradicted by their own colleagues in London, so it's not just the SNP that's ignored by wastemonster.

@jasalexander-hain2601 what's your point? You was wrong in 1999 and proven wrong in 2014 and still wrong in 2024? Starmer is significantly better than the SNP government. Because of the SNP, Scotland has no trams in Scotland, aside from the limited ones in Edinburgh, and no nuclear power plants. It can't deliver ferries, can't upgrade an A road... there are opposed to new oil licences. Scotland has basically become a 2nd world country under the SNP Government. We don't even have City or regional Mayors in Scotland, unlike in England. We have become the most centralised and poorly run country in Europe. The SNP abolished the 8 regional Police Forces into Policr Scottish, and it's absolutely awful. 1/3 of Police stations shut since 2014. Honestly, those of us outside the Central Belt have had enough of the SNP. Many of us in the Shetlands and Orkney Islands are warming to the idea of leaving Scotland and being represented by the UK similarly to Gibraltar or the Falklands. Who are the SNP to tell us the Shetlands Islands what we do with our oil? We have never elected them.

Similarly my postman could no longer manage the weight of his bag or the climbing of stairs and my hairdresser had to close due to the excessive taxation that allowed people like Salmond to enrich themselves at working people's expense. While working as a waiter I worked an event where he was a guest. He was rude and demanding to the wait staff; clicking his fingers at us, demanding for things ("bring more wine" instead of "could we get more wine please").
I then worked as a tour guide on the royal mile in Edinburgh. Salmond did an act during The Fringe (comedy I think) and he was out handing out leaflets near our area. You need a permit for this. A young woman I worked with told him he needed to move away and canvas elsewhere and he told her to f off.

Unrealistic ambitions? What like a country of Scotland's size and resources being able to be a prosperous independent country? We were told in 2014 by the "better together" campaign that an independent Scotland would be out of the EU, there'd be an energy crisis, there would be a cost of living crisis, etc etc, well guess what, all those things came to fruition, but not because we got independence, but because we didn't.
The UK as a whole is a total shambles under the Cons and now the red tories, so in future, think a bit about things before speaking total shite!
