    Wow, nice pulse transformer you got there! Never would have thought that a flyback could survive such an abuse. By the way I did a small calculation and I believe the pulses you get out of this transformer are on the order of several microseconds in duration. So 12 cm seems about right for 100 kV ;) Pulse transformers do in fact prevail over Marx generators in any sort of pulse power application where you don't need a standardised pulse (so everywhere besides insulation testing).

    • @PlasmaChannel
      @PlasmaChannel  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Vidduley, thank you! Yes, I stumbled across this method....just was experimenting around and found it. blows my mind the flybacks survive. I fried one...but i was pushing it past 5 inch arcs. CRAZY.

    • @enriquethethird7253
      @enriquethethird7253 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      is that 8.3kV/cm? i apologize, for the past week i've been figuring out how much mine produces.

    • @Vidduley
      @Vidduley 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@enriquethethird7253 well it depends strongly on the waveform and the shape of the electrodes. The only accurate way of saying is to measure directly with a voltage divider and an oscilloscope. I really don't like this 10 kV/cm thing that people seem to use at any time they can, but here for needle electrodes and microsecond pulses it's about right (say +-25%).

    Great to see a new video from you. Nice bit of work. Glad you tell people the one hand in pocket. It worries me a lot of channels on here play with high voltage but don’t show no safety to the people. Sometimes I think it would be good to show a video of the dangers of high voltage and how to stay safe before playing with microwave transformers and fly backs.

    • @PlasmaChannel

      Thank you. I appreciate you commenting! The one hand rule is super important. I myself fail to remember it from time to time. However, it is good to enforce. To be certain I dont hurt myself, I rarely work around high power levels such as MOT high voltage sources. Too much risk for me.

    Very cool! I work as a high voltage test engineer, and our device to generate up to 2.4 MV lightning impulses is about 35 feet tall. It's basically a marx generator (charges caps in series, discharges in parallel) with 14 stages, but each stage has two 2.0 uF capacitors each rated for about 100 kV. Each stage has an air gap and after the first one triggers at discharge time it's a fast chain reaction discharging all the stages. For practical purposes we dump the lightning impulse into things like transformer bushings meant to go in those huge transformers you may see at power generating stations or substations. I've only had the impulse generator up to about 600 kV though...

    • @PlasmaChannel
      @PlasmaChannel  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Techno, first off 1) Your job sounds AWESOME. 2) when your supervisors are not around, crank up that Marx generator (that is exactly what you described). Turn that sucker up to 100%. I am highly jealous that you work around such power. Cheers mate!

    Very impressive demo, as usual. I believe I understand the circuit, but a schematic would be helpful too. Either way, I'll try this. It differs from the usual flyback circuits in that it uses the primary directly, instead of winding an external coil around the ferrite core.

    • @PlasmaChannel
      @PlasmaChannel  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe in using the wires already built into the coil. As, they are designed by people with years of experience, so they likely are better than what most people could design.

    Have something kinda simmilar for my potato canon igniter.
    It's made of an electric fly swatter that charges up an capacitor and then I have an extra button to discharge it into a automotive 12v coil.
    Not having a spark gap like you have and only one spark but it does reach about 10cm so I have two 4cm spark gaps in the canon in each end, and it always light at first try.

    I may be totally wrong but this seems eerily similar to how old-school tesla coils are activated with spark gap interrupters (except for the lighter drive circuitry of course), but the idea is taking a relatively high AC-voltage, half-wave rectifying it, which then charges a series capacitance, which triggers the spark gap in parallel, closing the circuit with the primary of the flyback, forming a series LC circuit, driving the flyback secondary. If this is the case, I cant help but wonder about matching the resonances between primary and secondary by altering the capacitance! I suppose it might affect other things though like pulse frequency

    2 thoughts, if you're still monitoring comments:
    1) You show (and I have) a twin-arc lighter. What's the best thing to do with the second pair of HV wires in this case?
    2) I remember hearing an anecdote (no idea if historically true) about Tesla, when he was experimenting with his
    Wardenclyffe Tower, specifically feeding UHT into the atmosphere.
    The story goes that after a space of time 'unnaturally rhythmic' lightning started discharging not that far away, even though there were no clouds in the sky.
    The science of course, is that he was theoretically using the ionosphere as one 'plate' of a capacitor, which being a conductor at those voltages, lead to the wireless transmission of energy.
    I'd be interested to know your thoughts re the story and the possibilities, thinking of your hankering to 'make real lightning' :)

    • @PlasmaChannel
      @PlasmaChannel  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Chris, great questions. It is best you wire those transformers in series, and use a lot of insulation if you’re tucking the wire connections back into the lighter. Don’t want it arcing to the case.
      As for the lightning. I’ve never heard this story. I’ll have to look into it and get back to you! Sounds awesome, and, plausible.

    • @PlasmaChannel
      @PlasmaChannel  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are correct. However, since the power is being pulsed into the transformer, you can divide the 5 W, or 5 J per second, by the amount of sparks per second. When you do so, each 100,000 V spark is less than a joule, or less than a watt. Thank you for the input, I figured the output of those lighters was several watts.

      I fried my one too, But the Electronic works fine But the voltage of the lipo went down so the driver didnt switch of the mosfet and more than 5A are flowing for 3min from a little 250 mah Batterie (i disabled it as fast as i could to disconnect the Batterie.)
      This killed the lipo But i use now 2 of my older lipos Made for small racing Drohnes, becourse i had them and the capacity isnt Anymore the Best for flying. (300mah original,now only 180)they can be discharged at a very high A count like 4-5A for a longer time and its a Good use for them. A lighter is also Not used for more than 3 minutes

    I destroyed a wireless keyboard with one of those lighters, haha.
    My guess is that the high voltage impulse fried the circuitry. I’m happy that only the keyboard took damage, not the computer (maybe the aluminum case of it shielded it).
    Even if I love my coils, I’m turning back to low voltage: like using the heat of my hand and turn it into a fan using thermoelectric modules. It’s not as sparky, but it’s interesting in it’s own way. Also it’s kinda hard to find components (like motors) that will run on 0.2 V and 0.05 A.

      Hey, sorry to hear of the keyboard! Yeah, there are inherent dangers when working with high voltage. I'm glad to hear you're being safe. Also, thermoelectrics are rad.

    I'm surprised you managed to measure the resistance on the secondary. Did you later test to see if you had blown the internal diode ? I bet you were disappointed, considering the input volage, the output should be much higher than it appears (with the internal diode still functioning and without). /watch?v=4UFKl9fULkA&t=46m11s normal "flyback" operation, deflation mode. I'd like to see you illustrate exactly what's happening it the core (using the left hand rule for electron current) , I'm planning on doing that myself, if you don't beat me to it. it would be a good oportunity to explain what's happening in the so called "Leedskalnin PMH", perpetual loop magnetization, which bleeds off in ferrite HF cores such as this one. If you get your hands on a huge pure iron core, you could store a hell of a punch in it by running high power DC on the primary, and getting HV DC again on the primary /secondary when you sheer off the polished ended core breaker. A lever mechanism would make things easy.

    cool video for sure, recently i got euhm enchanted by plasma (cosmology).. a few years ago i almost got hit by lightning and i will never forget how impressive that was.. now what i wanted to say/ask is what do you think about the theory lightning is not (only) the result of static being built up in clouds trough convection but rather it being part of a larger current circuit, implicating its sunrelated also its linked to the theory of all weather being forced by the sun.. i think its very fascinating, also anthony peratt's (sure you know about his work at los alamos?) later work on linking petroglyphs with global observation of z'pinches most likely caused by a big flare or micronova.. there's so much things i could refer to like the valles marineres plasma-scar on mars and other plasma related possible evidences found around our solarsystem.. i find it just so crazy our whole universe could be plasma/electric in nature and popular science feeding us info about space rarely mentioning it.. (sorry for my bad english i'm belgian, dutch speaking :p )

    I was wondering about making best use of a dual arc lighter. It's not clear in the vid how you used the output(s) of the lighter you disassembled. It looks like there are two independent windings on that output transformer, so did you wire the outputs in series or only used one of the arc winding outputs? Dual arc is the only sort of lighter I can get hold of, so that's my interest. Many thanks.

You're sending chopped up DC into the flyback transformer (though the series capacitors arguably block the straight DC component), but the changing magnetic field in the core will make AC sparks on the HV side. Can you put a neon bulb in the big spark without frying it? It'd be interesting to see if both electrodes light up (AC) or only one (DC).

    That's not 100Kv ; that's 381Kv!!! Breakdown of air is 3kv/mm, if that's 5 inch that's 127mm, each taking 3Kv = 381Kv
    Can that be used to charge a high voltage capacitor?

    • @PlasmaChannel
      @PlasmaChannel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The 3kv / mm measurement is only if using rounded, smooth electrodes. Specifically 1” brass spheres. With sharp points such as ends of a wire, it is much easier to form sparks with a lower voltage.
