I went to school there for a year from 1970-1971. I was in the third grad, and Mrs. Natschie (sp?) was my teacher. I kept in contact with Mrs. Natschie for abot 5-6 yars after that. She took an interest in me as a stdent...a fery profound woman! She sparked my interest in learning. But as for this video, I don't recall a darn thing except the facade. There's nothing on the interior that's recognisable.
I grew up on the dead end road Indiana street directly in front of the building (torn down now). My grandma still lives there & went to this school as a child. Flavor stop is like a 4 min walk from home. I even took some of my senior photos sitting on the platforms above the doors lol. This area is home.
Have been in the neighborhood since 1982. Always wished I could get inside the school. I wanted to see something made of the place. Sometimes I could hear the echos of days long gone when children ran in the school yard. I took pride in the property and neighborhood Thank you for sharing this video.
It's sad to see all of these older buildings in the city just sitting and rotting and getting scheduled to be demolished. I like older buildings myself. Both houses I have lived in for the last couple of years has been built pre 1930.
well its definantly not beyond repair but it will be very expensive to do so. also for a building thats been abandoned for 30 plus years it doesn't look to bad. someday someone will probly do something with it. if it hasn't been done yet.
There'sa school that's about in as bad of shape 1 mile from where I live, and there's plans to gut it and turn it into condos, so yes, there's hope for Lafayette. I taped it from the outside, because just like your building, the condo developer went through, and found it was totally junk. Anyway, just type in "Leominster carter building" if you want to see it. All the collapsed ceilings I shot is an indicator the floors are gone. Dunno if it'll ever get developed, might be demo'd.
Hope the owner is paying full taxes on the property. Its a shame that they let it go. It is an eye sore and a danger. Owner should be forced to do something.
This building is not driving the home values down, the people living around it are. The school still stands tall, cockeyed to the street, but it didn't put junked cars, tires, appliances, and worn out couches on the yards of unpainted houses and porches. Grass and weeds stand just a little bit taller than the paper bag beer coolers from the potato chips and cookies store.
I've seen through the windows from the outside of the building and it looks as though the roof has caved in. I'd be afraid to even go in there. They need to tear it down.
I feel like this would be creepy, kinda cool maybe. But something that also might make people feel a little nostalgic because it used to be a place for children! o_o
It WAS a good building. It's decaying because no one thought it was worth saving. A few years back there was interest in converting it, giving the building a stay of execution, never happened. The neighborhood is doing the same, decaying, and I doubt anything new will go in that location unless it's a gas station or a liquor store. Sad to see something that brings back such good memories, rotting away. I wonder if they will save any of the bricks, flooring or the steps? Goodbye old school:-(
@@theejoeylee sadly. I know the feeling all too well. I went to Edison and that one was demolished about 5 years ago. It’s sad to drive by the lot where it once stood,
little pewds Amen. I went to school at Edison and the idea that it could end up looking like this saddens me. These buildings could and should be repurposed rather than left to decay.

i don't think it's an eyesore. i think those kinds of biuldings are beautiful and intersting.
Old Irving school at W. 6th & Hawthorne was torn down a few years back. New Irving is at 1115 W. 5th St, site of old West High School.

I live in Lafayette and I remember that building
This building is slated for demolition later this year. I can hardly wait for it to disappear. Then something new can go up there.
The building is still there unfortunately. I went that direction today.

@dsmbear nothing except a bathroom and maybe a classroom or two. when did it close? i still see my kindergarten teacher sometimes.
This building was in fact torn down a few months ago. It is now history.
@LuigiGodzillaGirl No. Several homes near the school didn get water in their basements.

They didn't care what happened to the building. They got money for the sale of the school. That is the only thing they are concerned about.
i live on the other side of the highway froem it
does anybody know what happened to the old Irving elementry? I went there in the 80's and early 90's
They tore that down several years ago. A new one was built where West Middle sat.
@@theodoretepaske8755 wait..irving AND west middle are gone? I went to west middle in the 90s & my cousins went to Irving.

Why was this school closed?
Better to tear down those old buildings. Too unsafe.

What a shame!
Should have been demolished by 1995. Not fair to the citizens to keep a rats nest in place.
nope
That is scary
Another empty for ever
