Falling asleep under anesthesia is one of the most dangerous parts to surgery. When the anesthesia rapidly hits your brain and body, it causes nerves to rapidly shut down throughout the body, and this can cause chaos in the brain, heart, blood vessels, and other major organs. What happens when the anesthesia doesn't work though? I share a story of a serious anesthesia complication, but from it, is revealed a powerful mind body connection from a patient. The mindset that patients have before falling asleep clearly impacts their anesthesia course, as evidenced by this patient story. It reveals just how much power our mind can have over our body, even when anesthesia complications occur.
While I was asleep and having my first baby by cesarean I woke up when I heard my baby cry and I asked if my baby was healthy. I worked in a surgical ICU on a military base in the 1980s and 90s. I remember one patient who woke up during open heart surgery when the anesthesiologist took a break. As you can imagine, the surgeons were FURIOUS and the anesthesiologist had to be located emergently. I'll never forget them.

I woke up from knee replacement operation after injection in my spine which ment no breathing tubes in my mouth. I could hear drilling going on. I turned to the team. Asked, is everything ok. They replied with a yes. Then they must have gaven me a shoot to send me off to sleep. Amazing experience never felt any pain felt so very relaxed about the whole thing. From UK x

I got poked 12x to get an iv started one time for an upper Gi. That was a very horrible experience. The long term effects were I believe I had a possible stroke while under general anesthesia. I woke up with a very bad headache and felt extremely dizzy for a long time after the surgery. Like months and years after and still till this day.
I had failed anesthesia. It was only ECT so it is quick but the panic and awareness plus not being able to breathe due to muscle relaxers and them not knowing and one guys inexperience to help me breathe. The absolute worst experience I've ever been through. Now I can never have surgery or anything like it again ugh
My Dad went in for a Colonoscopy and he was talking with the doctor. At some point after he was given the sedative they realized it was not working. They repeatedly asked "how are you feeling" and he kept saying "fine".
The doctor realized the needle was not in correctly. The doctor was very annoyed but then the doctor put in the next iv.
We laughed about it as it was not general anesthesia.

I've had anesthesia 8 times. 4 times they told me afterwards, that they had lost me during surgery, and 2 times I was awake. So, my experience has been 3/4 of the time, anesthesia wasn't as planned.
One was for a heart procedure for A-fib and I watched the waves of different colors, and the placement of their instruments, on the monitor screen. I didn't know I was supposed to be asleep, until they took the breathing tube out, and I asked them what the blue pulsating color was. The doctors were shocked that I had beetn awake and watching. They asked me a lot of questions, but
no one ever explained why, just that it had only happened to them once before, etc. Obviously, I try to avoid surgery. I don't use any recreational drugs, etc. I am a yogi, but it was certainly not intentional. Do some people have more difficulty with anesthesia not working as expected?
It hasn't been particularly painful, and I haven't been very anxious, but I didn't know it could cause problens beyond pain. Perhaps doctors could ask their patients if they are asleep, or something similar.

Excuse the personal question and I mean no offence, but how can you be a medical professional with only one arm? I imagine there would be many, many times you'd need two hands to administer medication or physically handle a patient?

Interstitial iv's hurt. Sometimes propofol can hurt, if lidocaine is added, does it prevent people from feeling interstitial propofol fluid pain? You couldn't be more right, establishing that trust is key. When there's a sense of trust, then there's a sense of safety & that would make a difference with someone with PTSD. I can't imagine how empowering it would be to have a surgical team & anesthesiologist that genuinely cared about patient. We all don't have a Dr Kaveh keeping us safe in OR, your exposures to OR does help empower myself when OR team & anesthesiologist here could careless about person or quality care they provide. My Mother woke up during exploratory abdominal surgery. My Mother's surgeon got extremely ANGRY at the anesthesiologist. He never used him in surgery again.
My iron levels were low after ankle surgery. I was given by iv, packed iron. My iv needle came out and the iron started going into my arm tissues.
My arm blew up. Now I have very dark skin on that arm. Yes it is painful.

In the early’90’s I had cataract surgery. I was aware of not liking having a mat and strap put on the eye going to be operated on. A month or so later I went to have the second eye operated on. The anesthesiologist joked”Oh no! I was hoping I wouldn’t get you the second time”. He showed me the charts from the first surgery going up an then down! It was really funny!

This happened to me! C-section. 1982. Brigham & Women's. I didn't want general anesthesia because of previous problems with it. They did the spinal. My legs went numb but not my abdomen--I've got a lot of physical deformities in my pelvis. Once they cut into me, and saw that I was in severe pain, they said they couldn't put me out until they got the baby out. He was premie and didn't really want to come out. That was one intense situation. Very grateful for my training in self-hypothesis! It was my dad's medical specialty. I later worked in the anesthesiology dept at that hospital. Had the most wonderful boss there.

My wife is a genuine orphan. No mother, no father. So panic attacks, anxiety and hyperarousal are so much a part of her whole existence. The comments following this video show other hypersensitive people also.

Hypnosis and acupuncture work well for certain people, not just Chinese backgrounds.
These cultural inheritances are important in my professional area (social work). The military, medical model (ICD 11) and the psychological model (DSM 5) are not yet officially aware of this importance.

After a 6-plus hour bypass surgery, I woke thinking I had been kidnapped. It took 3 days to come out of that delirium 😢

I've woken up mid surgery (emergency surgery both times) I don't remember pain don't remember much but started to weeks later so traumatic
Thank God my surgeon realized I wasn't "under" and told anesthesia I wasn't "out". I was very anxious before surgery and this was in 80's before versed and propafol. The Demerol and Vistaril I had preop really hadn't relaxed me. I had my eyes closed because of the bright lights and was praying. They clapped the mask over my face, eyes shot open and I started struggling to sit up. Old trauma, plagues me to this day. Thank God for the new meds in use today. I am an RN but am still pretty anxious when I have to have surgery or RFAs done for pain control.

Recovery was not as bad as I thought it would be. The anxiety before surgery was much worse
I wish you could be my anesthesiologist on my next surgery. I have issues with certain drugs, so getting anesthesia scares the ___ out of me, but every surgery I've had I didn't meet or talk to the anesthesiologist until minutes before they put me under & all of them seemed to blow off my concerns. Last surgery I had was a major deal, & I had to hunt down the anesthesia practice before my surgery to express my concerns. When I did talk to an anesthesiologist it was not the doc I met minutes before my surgery the next day 🙄
I was having an exploratory on my female parts...I had endometriosis....In the OR I could hear people talking and then I felt a puncture in my adomen...it hurt...the next thing I felt was a burning sensation (they were using a Lazer to burn off the endometriosis)....I wanted to tell them but couldn't because of the paralysis from the meds. Fortunately the doctor saw tears streaming from my eyes and had the anesthesiologist to give more meds...
My doctor didn't say anything until I described the surgery...He was shocked that I knew what happened.
Years later I had to have a hysterectomy...a different anesthesiologist....I was so nervous & about to jump off the table....he asked me what was going on...I said you are going to make sure I'm knocked out right? He said of course...someone did a number on you ... don't worry I'll take good care of you 😊
What is your opinion about acupuncture versus anesthesia. Can Acupuncture be used for invasive surgery.

When I was preparing to deliver my third child be C-section I asked the anesthesiologist to give me an epidural. With no explanation he informed me I was having a saddle block even though I had specifically the epidural. The saddle block completely stopped working while I was still wide open and the pain was unbearable. I started thrashing my head back and forth ( consequently tearing three arteries: carotid, vertebral and one more I can’t remember. ) Long story short : those dissected and occluded arteries lead to a massive stroke 21/2 weeks later. I crossed over and came back for my newborn.

This happened to me. Doc didnt mix the gases right. I was a little sleepy but I not enuf. I couldn't breathe but very much awake. I took the mask off and told them it wasn't working. Adjustments made. I went out.
Certainty, curiosity, confidence. Also ways to go through labor; through childbirth without, or at least, minimizing medical intervention.
I've had umpteen surgeries, seriously, and have never had a bad experience. I've never been afraid or worried about them. I'm a hard stick for IV's. The poor nurses have a rough time. I always tell them, it does NOT bother me so don't worry about sticking me 50 times. 😅 They all know me now and there's a note on my records.

This happened to my baby. He did not receive proper anesthesia due to a faulty IV. It was his only IV. He had an airway revision surgery and scheduled for an MLB. Suppraglottoplasty complete. Intubation initiated. I was told he had a vagal response and coded. He never lost pulses but the code took several minutes to resolve. Is that a laryngeal spasm in medical terms?

I'm terrified of needles even just getting a blood test and seeing you hold the IV needles and talking about their thickness and the nerve block needle in the beginning of the video just scares the crap out of me. I need extensive Oral Surgery and I'm so scared to go in. I don't know what to do, or how to get past my severe fear. I've tried calling many psychologist for this fear, but so far all say they are not taking more patients at this time, or they don't even call back. 😢
I had an infiltration in the ER one time. I kept telling them the IV was really hurting. The nurse kept "assuring" me it was ok. She wrapped a warm towel around my arm. I just finally had to get angry. When they took the towel off, I couldn't believe it, nor could they! My upper arm was HUGE like a balloon. And it hurt sooo bad!
Don't doctors use barbiturates as the most common Anesthesia medication in most cases? Propofol is used as an anesthetic for minor surgical procedures and as an introduction to long-lasting anesthesia.
I know they use Benzodiazepines as sedation medication before and after the operation, especially Flunitrazepam.

I had the iv infiltrate into my soft tissue. The anesthesiologist ask me if I was getting sleepy and I said no. I looked at my arm and it looked the size of a grapefruit! She put in another very quickly and I was otutta there. When I woke up she had put and ice pack and the bump was going down.

I had my first colonoscopy with Versaid ( 1990s). They may as well have given me saline. I could moan but not speak but felt everything. I finally sat up and was able to shout stop!!! Took me decades to go back. Would not go unless they used prophphol ( sp). I had had 3 Natural childbirths and a kidney stone- none of them was as painful as that colonoscopy. Have had no issue with prophophal. Also had a bad experience with Turdol immediately post surgery analgesic. It was a new drug and think they were using it instead of opieds. It did not work and finally the surgeon gave me a narcotic. I came out of ansresthesia in severe pain. Never had another procedure done at that hospital again,. They didn’t listen and were rude. The RR nurse said to a student “ give her a full dose. She is a nurse and nurses always require more for pain. “. Thank goodness I have had some good experiences as well.

Yes, with medical supervision it can be powerful in the right setting!
I'm a nurse and I'm actually looking into it now..I have a.little fear from a possible k-hole effect(dissociative.dis/out of body feeling)...but not worried too bad..this drug has been around for years and they can adjust.it.accordingly...im not sure about Dr. Ks area..but In NC it's usually 0.5-0.8 mg/kg and they measure your body and get weight and HX and all that. I've never used for my issues but I have a consult on 03/22/23. Wish me luck and good luck to you. 😊

@@cris-RN I had ketamine infusion and got very frightened and panicky halfway through and they had to give me some versed to calm me down. An anesthesiologist years before told me I'd probably not like the side effects of it. When it was done I asked them if I had died or had a stroke during infusion. I'm kind of scared to try it again. I'm going to probably get TMS treatment again instead. Both are quite effective for depression though. TMS is definitely not as bad but it can hurt your head.

None of this is helping my fears. Ever since being on IV antibiotics for 4 months I’m a hard stick (17 tries once & was finally gotten in my foot) and my veins blow easily. Do you monitor the IV’s also?

@@terriharmison4090 I'm a hard stick too. The last time I went to ER , and told them I'm a hard stick, they used a vein finder. It uses ultrasound. They put in a IV, one stick, in under a minute. I recently had a medical procedure and purposely chose the hospital over a surgery center as I knew they would be able to request it from the ER. Makes all the difference.
@@lauraphillipson6334 I’ve had ultrasound numerous times. They help find veins for certain (I hate it because they go so deep it’s painful) but frequently my veins blow anyway. I just had back surgery and the EMT who started my IV got me on the first stick! It’s just hit or miss, pardon the pun.

I had a vitrectomy years ago as an outpatient and the guy before me chickened out so they took me in right away. My eye had been frozen but no one gave me a sedative but I thought they had. After the surgery (which I was awake for) I told the doctor “wow, those are some really good sedatives”. He laughed and said you never had one. We decided it was the placebo affect. I was miss party girl. 😂
If the doctor has no explanation for the pain I feel, I tell myself that the pain isn’t real. Mostly the pain goes away. Unfortunately it doesn’t work with my fibromyalgia or IBS.

I seem to need more anesthesia every time I go under conscious sedation is this normal? I have scurvy and need all of my teeth removed usually I would push to have it done in a hospital because of pre-existing medical conditions and diagnosis how do I know how do I trust that they will give me enough sedation so that I remember nothing? Because I can guarantee if they don't give me enough it's going to be bad for all of us. With conscious sedation I come out of it immediately when i am in recovery (directly across the hall) I'm awake alert and within two or three minutes I am discharged and get to go home. Every time I have the procedure done they need to give me more anesthesia and I come out of it quicker every single time. I've had a doctor/surgeon previously reassure me they were going to do a conscious sedation I had to go to a specific hospital get that done they put the IV in and he didn't give me any situation at all. That was the worst thing I've ever gone through the vomiting to ask for it aspiration being unable to breathe and he just kept going like it was clear sailing. It took me 6-7 years and i would cancel/ reschedule the procedure for me to trust but this time they would give me the sedation for procedure I have shunned like the plague never wanting it to be done again. Thankfully my new doctor surgeon reassured me that I would not remember what happened during the procedure. And he did just that and it has gone the same way every time I have to get it done. My trust in him is absolute. The only thing is each time I go in for the procedure I need more sedation. I worry that the time may come when the amount of sedation they have to give me actually can harm me.

@Medical Secrets what can you tell me about it? I was diagnosed with it in 2020 after waking up from surgery and having what looked similar to my regular seizures and whenever I have a procedure I have to be put under yet still have functional seizures afterwards.
