    The Sony MDR7506 headphones have long been a stage and studio standard, despite being a relatively old design. One of the main issues of the stock headphones is the vinyl earpads, which look and feel cheap and wear out extremely quickly, developing cracks and flaking away. They are also very hot in use, especially in warmer climates such as where I am.
    In this video I show how to replace the stock earpads with an aftermarket set of velour pads that I got off Amazon. Fortunately these are widely available and very affordable. The process is also relatively straightforward, requiring no tools apart from a bit of patience. The results really do transform these headphones in my opinion - they don't sound any better but boy are they more comfortable!

    This is exactly correct: Takes extreme patience! Work it back and forth, back and forth, be prepared for slips and frustration, but just keep at it.
    Unfortunately, I also had high-end headphones that required this type of fit and it is very difficult to find the correct replacement pads too. Make sure you have the correct pads for your model headphones (mine have about 6 different types all with very similar model names).
    Good luck! This is a severe patience test!

      Well I don't think it takes *extreme* patience on this model - fitting the pads to my Beyer DT770s, now THAT was a test of my patience for sure...

      I was considering the DT880 fo save the faff, but the grey sheen design looks tacky compared to other models. Would you say you prefer the Sonys over the DT770's? Im still struggling to decide. Ill be using my solid state amps to power them and i dont mix or try to isolate sound, just music. Cheers

    Thx. Very helpful. I’d just like to add that I’ve been using these headphones for studio tracking for many years. They’re lightweight and very comfortable compared with most headphones. My only criticism is the stock ear pads fall apart, as you mentioned. Thx

    Some of the third party sellers of replacement earpads for this headphone give you a flat plastic hook with the new pads. They work very well. Never replaced such pads before, it took me just two minutes with the help of the plastic hook to replace one of the pads of my old Sony MDR and i was finished in under five mintes to complete the replacement with the other one.

    Its annoying that Sony has never updated their obviously flawed earpads for the 3+ decades the MDR7506 has existed. Pretty sure its intentional as so many replace the entire headphone.

    I figured out an easier way. I should make a vid but use his method initially but use a couple small pieces of masking tape and when you get a section in--lightly tape it down. Its like having 4 extra fingers. This way it won't pop out and force you to start over, they are more robust then you think. I used a different brand though.

    Thanks, have you seen what original pads looks like? I bought one, bit expensive compared to competitors- but the material looks really cheap like wrinkled thin skin, foam is not thick and diameter not 1:1 with the plastic rim where it wraps. 🤔 . I beginning to doubt if really genuine pad.

    • @GLBProductions

    I have the Sony MDR-V6 which are supposedly identical to the 7506. Do the velour replacement pads last longer than the original Sony pads?

    • @GLBProductions
      @GLBProductions  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes they do - ironically the pads you see in the video have some vinyl piping running around their outside circumference (the same material as the original Sony pads are made of) and this is the ONLY thing that has worn out on them so far 😂

    • @dragon-ly2xf
      @dragon-ly2xf 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GLBProductions Thanks for the info. I bought my MDR-V6s and used them only a few times and put them in storage for many years in the box. when I looked at them years later, everything, including the carrying pouch, had rotted. Most of my audio/video is Sony, but the longevity of the MDR-V6 material is awful.

    How much are you familiar or care about acoustic? Have you measured the HP before and after the mod? Is there any difference in the cups sealing against the listener's head to get the same bass response? How about changes in HF resonances? You need to verify the consistency in sound quality before recommending viewers to replace the original pads with aftermarket models.

    • @GLBProductions
      @GLBProductions  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fair points! However I regard these as utility headphones - I don't use them to make critical mix or EQ decisions, just to check the integrity of the signal. Hence I'm not really concerned about any minor change that the new earpads have on the sound. What I do know is that a pair of headphones that were previously unusable are now resurrected!

    • @elpibe2020
      @elpibe2020 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      GLB Productions ok, so what headphone you use to work in your mix?

    • @GLBProductions

      I rarely mix on headphones but if I do I use Beyerdynamic DT250s.

    • @omidool
      @omidool 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fair point. This model is very popular among the studio/sound mixers/engineers, therefore I pointed out a few concerns that may be important to more professional users. But generally, if you get a good seal with any earpad (to make sure of a decent bass response), the rest of the effect on the frequency response happens at much higher frequencies that most people may not even realize.

      My first reaction is that their may be a slight difference, but, the low end is still strong, and yeah, they're $100 headphones so...I'm putting the old pads on my other, older pair which had no pads, If they end up back at home (they're at work) I'll do a side by side.

I had a 30 year old pair of these Sonys snap in half as I tried to get the old flaking earpads off because the plastic build had become so brittle.
