Buell Blast Gaskets - Backfiring, sputtering, and dying

  • My blast would start fine, but once it heated up it would sputter, backfire (out of the carb/airbox side), then die. After talking to Harley about possible causes, we agreed this was a probable solution. Enjoy.

    Don't ever use sand paper to get off the old gasket material. That part is made of soft aluminum. Instead, use the 75 cent cheap little BRASS brushes they sell in the paint brush section at Harbor Freight. You must use the brass brush, and NOT stainless or steel brushes, because the brass bristles will not scratch aluminum. You can use the brass brush along with a solvent, like gasoline, to scrub the gasket mating surface clean.

    UPDATE: The gasket WAS the issue with my bike! After installing the new one, no more dying, no backfiring and I noticed a significant power gain! Cheers!

    I just bought a 2011 Buell Blast which does not start. Many people mention the 'Auto Enricher' (or Enrichener) as a problem, so naturally I focused on that. It turns out that calling it an 'enrichener' is misleading, because what it actually does is lean out the mixture as the bike warms up. Inside is a little brass thingy containing stuff that expands with heat. That pushes a pin out, which pushes a plug/needle that closes an extra passage for fuel and air (the Harley 'manual choke' simply pulls that plug/needle out for starting). The heat comes from a little heating element that comes on when the bike starts, and it supposedly takes about 2 minutes to close the 'enrichener'. It sounds like your enrichener is working, and your starting mixture was ok with the gasket leak, so when the 'enrichener' leaned the mixture out, it was too lean. If the 'enrichener' is not expanding, due to no voltage, bad heating element, or stuck pin, the mixture should be too rich all the time, and it wouldn't affect starting. I have a feeling a lot of people have purchased replacement enricheners unnecessarily.

      Though they stopped making the blast in 2009? Think a 2011 would be a very rare bike?

      With an O-ring leak your fuel would lean out more. I would replace the o-ring first and see if that fixes your problem.

    The carburetor (CV 40) on the blast doesn't have an accelerator pump, so it won't squirt fuel when the throttle is twisted, thus making it start, when cold, extended engine cranking. When hor a similar issue, when hot, twist the throttle slightly then crank the engine. even with this technique it takes a tries. Its the nature of the beast...
    I am assuming that the accelerator pump was deleted to meet emissions standards.
    Other HD & Buell modles that used the CV 40 carburetor had an accelerator pump circuit, with the exception of the first year HD used the CV 40's, My thoughts, that the accelerator pump circuit was added to correct this issue, then was removed to meet stricter emissions.
    So, get a CV 40 with an accelerator pump, or just deal with it...
    I just deal with it, once it starts its fine.
    Or, another option is to slightly, increase the jet size, make the mistake and oversize the jets! Thinking more is better, slightly rich gives you better throttle response, and some increase in overall performance. But to large, just wastes fuel and pollutes...
    Their is only so much oxygen in air per volume (78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen & 1% other gases). Once all of the oxygen is consumed the rest of the fuel just goes out the tailpipe unburned, because their wasn't enough oxygen to burn all of the fuel. You need 14.7 pounds of air to burn one pound of fuel, and out of the 14.7 pounds of air, 21% of it is oxygen...

      Do you still have your Buell Blast? Would you recommend the Blast as a commuter bike? I'm thinking to get one as my first bike. I live in Florida, so the weather is pretty mild year around.

    • @BEEBEE159
      @BEEBEE159 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you hold the throttle open, while cranking at the same time? You said this method only works when the engine is hot, what's the procedure for cranking when the engine is cold? Do you hold the throttle open when it's cold, too?

    • @shaneandrew8292
      @shaneandrew8292 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BEEBEE159 What i think he meant for cold start is to hold the starter button....thus extended cranking happens and after awhile it starts. So if it starts in one second pressing in starter, try it for five -ten seconds etc. There are some other videos with people holding in and it eventually starts. Use common sense. Don’t hold it forever. Try troubleshooting everything else. Also google owners manual for your bike. Between that and Buell Blast forums you should be good.

    What's the name of the gasket you replaced?

    • @austinrichards1547
      @austinrichards1547 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The O-ring he replaced was the manifold to engine.
      The gasket he replaced was the air cleaner to carburetor.
      If I remember correctly, in the Buell Blast parts catalog they are listed as "O-RING, manifold-engine" and "SEAL, air cleaner - carburetor".
      Dif you Google "Buell Blast parts catalog pdf", there should be a scanned copy of the catalog within the first 5 links that pop up.
      In that catalog you can find the specific part numbers to order from Harley.

  • @evilstalkerhorne
    @evilstalkerhorne 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ok dude let me guess... it worked for awhile then same issue. You need to check your engine mounts since they support the whole weight of the engine and transmission. The one under your oil fill has a rubber in it that wears out. When this happens the engine sags and pulls the rubber boot off between the carb and the motor. I have done mine 2 times. The first I paid someone else to do. When it went bad the next year I did it myself.... this one actually is the one that still works. As with any issue I have found it pays to fix it yourself. Check your frame supports on the engine.

      Wow, you just solved a mystery that has been haunting me for a long time. Left me stranded twice, same issue: rubber manifold with two ring clamps would break right in the middle but always at the top at the rubber manifold. Now I know why. THANK YOU!!!

    • @evilstalkerhorne
      @evilstalkerhorne ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@nightshifter886 Last fall I had to put a 3rd one in since 2017. I was tired of paying the money for the Buell part. I got the HD one which is different there is a lip at the top and it is a slightly larger metal bolt sleeve inside it. I took a rotor tool cut the top flat, then ground it even. I put silicone on a large washer so the rubber is sandwiched now. I then shot some silicone in the bolt hole and installed it let it sit for a few days and it seems to be holding just fine. Maybe it will last longer than a year and a half. That is how long the others die at. Also, I upgraded to a LED light on Amazon which came no where near 550 HD wants for the same thing. Problem is it sits in the housing but you cannot screw the rim that secures it because the dish is not deep enough. The rim fits perfect and otherwise works. I just took 2 zipties and looped to the dish and the retaining rim to hold it fairly tight and got a tube of silicone caulk for $4 at Menards then calked in once I knew it was in the correct orientation after a night in the alley shining it in different arrangements. So when I want to remove it I will just take a straight blade and cut it out. This will stop the vibration issues, seal the area behind from rain and also keep the light in place. I left a few long strips of painters tape in an X shape for a day or two to make sure it was perfectly held in exact place. Moral to the story is do your own repairs whenever possible and don't always buy the part they say works if you can find a similar one cheaper and modify it a little bit.

      The problem is most likely the ignition module. Symptom: when the bike heats up it sputters, backfires and stalls. Remove the ignition module cover with a thin flat screw driver, it will run much longer. Replace the module simple fix, with a $200 part.
