Can't wait for the mid-budget movie to make a return. It baffles me, that studios aren't setting aside a small amount of money to give to filmmakers and basically tell them: "Do whatever you want!". Because if you fund 10 projects like these, it's still cheaper than the next Cinematic Universe and there's bound to be at least a success or two in there. Wouldn't that make more sense than spending 200 - 300 million (wtf) and hoping the movie makes 1 billion or more?
I think they are doing that with tv shows now, especially as they can scrap them and remove content if they aren’t runaway successes and get tax credits claiming it as a loss

the voice actor thing being taken over by a-listers really irritates me because if it's a recognizable name/voice then all i can do is imagine them in the booth emoting and it takes like half the movie for me to forget that i'm listening to an actor doing lines to being invested in a character.
I often attribute our growing dislike of celebrities (Movie stars, singers, youtubers, etc.) to an ever-increasing disenchantment with elite culture and the out-of-touch people (often extremely uneducated idiots and talentless nepo-babies) who inhabit that social strata. I didn't used to let that sort of stratification of society bother me, but It is beginning to fill me with a rankling, festering sort of rage.
Also...The Next 5 Planet of the Apes movies?!?!

I just hate going to the theater. Its cold, its loud, I can't pause if I have to pee, the floor is sticky, and snacks require the equivalent of a college fund. So, why tf would I want to put myself through that for a movie that I can figure out the plot and twist of within the first 5 minutes?
If you have to pay an actor 40 mil to be in your movie maybe it's time to find other actors 🤷
Me personally the reason why, out of touch celebrities, are out of touch, is not because they did something, 30-40 years ago, that's because they're doing, the most popular mainstream thing to do. Because if you have to constantly advertise yourself, as famous, you're not famous. But that's just my opinion, on the topic.

I think movie posters are in the same boat to be honest. I really dislike seeing current posters for new movies and noticing the movie star's face or name on there who most of the time, I don't care for.
I like ones that the director themselves snip an image of the movie to show.
I know it's flawed to do that, but most posters just look the same to me, or just copy what is popular at that time like an amateur graphic designer forgot his homework last minute.
I disagree actually, I have never seen more interesting, cool looking and creative posters out there than I have in the last two decades. Before it would be hard to find even a few alt posters for a movie, and usually those would be only for international releases. It’s probably because digital promotion and releases no longer limit the marketing to a few safe inside the theater posters.

I think that it's not so much the movie stars, but rather the power that has been handed over to those stars. Like you pointed out, the studios used to hold all the cards, but now you have certain mega-stars who agree to a movie, but then insist on rewriting the scripts, tailoring them to the image they want to continue projecting. The result of this is the same actors essentially playing themselves (or the manufactured version of themselves) in countless movies, regardless of the genre (for example Will Smith was pretty much the same guy in the Wild, Wild West as he was in Men in Black).
I kinda disagree. I think that streaming killed cinema. Movie stars are the draw because we already know their names. Yeah, we see much of the same stuff, but that’s because there’s so many movies being produced that the best bet is to sell you nostalgia. Big studios are less likely to bet on smaller productions with unique stories and actors because they lose money if not successful. So they bank on the sure things, stuff and people you already know and like. These actors demand more money because the studios keep them relevant, not the audience. I’d say we actually need more, new movie stars. Because if you like an actor you may see them in smaller, cheaper and more unique productions. But people aren’t gonna leave home with countless streaming platforms unless they think they’re going to see something big. I don’t like this bloated and empty approach to movie making. But it’s happening in music as well. Once streaming can be had for a small fee monthly, giving you access to a countless stream of content, the whole system is devalued. Problem is, customers aren’t happy, artists are underpaid (a select few, overpaid and overvalued) and underrepresented, and studios are operating at a loss. None of this is sustainable. And it’ll be a while before it normalizes. When both studios customers aren’t willing to take a chance on a movie they aren’t familiar with this is the outcome.
I’ve heard it said movie stars are dying for the same reason you said, streaming. They try to use them to counteract the desire to stay home and watch, but people aren’t showing up for big names alone anymore
@@mggardiner4066 because there aren’t any new big names. Everybody is in a retention competition. All the biggest stars are at least in their 40s.
Based on the video title, my first thought is those ads before movies nowadays where the big-name actors are thanking you for still watching movies in cinemas, feels so corporate. I also think of how some movies are marketed based on specific actors they got, as if the work that all the other departments did cannot stand on its own.

Just want to say personally (and I'm sure more people have posted this already I've just not looked) but if it takes longer for you to do script because your not happy with it I've no doubt the majority of people who you will still come back. I understand that you kinda need to be consistent to grow the channel etc....but if you're anything like me then putting more pressure on yourself to get something done will make the outcome worse. Anyway interesting take on a subject that's been talked about a lot, it's always the machine itself I automatically think about being the problem with cinema but as you said, often the stars really don't help things by trying to be "relatable" and being on ADs. Also I LOVE the new intro, makes me want to go grab a horse and ride off into the sunset with a cigarillo hanging out my mouth haha looking forward to the next one already!

I've heard Peter's was all set to direct the new Superman with Kevin Smith's script. His daughter had a school report on spiders that he thought was so cool that it inspired him to try to rewrite the Superman script to have the climax with a giant spider attacking the earth. He was let go from the project for some reason.

Movie theaters are made for the rambunctious visual spectacle and the loud noises in heavy speakers. Going to a theater to watch two dudes sitting at a table discussing the quality of home baked bread for 2 hours is big no. I can do that while I wash the dishes in my kitchen in a tiny cellphone screen and the experience wouldn't be worse for it.
Now that I see the new intro, I am completely behind it! It fits your personality and projects.
Also, really loved this one. I’m a sucker for anything film related though.
Sorry for so many comments but screenwriting and film is my interest - I remember recently watching Ricky Stanicky with my dad and being able to guess the entire plot within the first five minutes without having heard of it which is BAD I AM NOT TALENTED. Then I remember an awkward scene at a bar where they were doing this like millennial coded bit before apologizing or something to Ricky and I just remember everything about it being awkward. The framing was static, the take was too long, the delivery was stilted, etc. and I remember thinking "isn't the red haired guy supposed to be a comedian?" and then I remembered they don't allow writers on set anymore and instead just shoot the script as is now in as few takes and go with what's best. After I watched that movie, I felt glad that I never ended up breaking into screenwriting or content creation in general. That is a genuinely depressing realization to have about your dream job lmao

Curious for a part II that explores more of how the studios are contributing. The Bob Iger’s obviously don’t need yearly salaries as high as Iron Man made that one time. It’s all a gross amount but you know.
Yea Kavernacle had a similar video about the slopification of the industry. At this point i haven't seen a film in theaters in YEARS and don't plan to like ever lmao why pay 50 bucks when i can see it for free or super cheap at home
I feel you're concentrating on wrong thing.... Movie studios in collaboration with mass audiences ruined American cinema! Other world cinema is just fine.
American film industry is living under a new studio system only with far less studios than back in the old system (earlier part of 1900's). Massive studio mergers have basically left america only with Disney and Warner Brothers. So again, studios and their homogenizing all of their movies are ruining cinema. Not many movie star actually want to be typecast. They play in the movies movie studios finance. And they finance the same stuff over and over again.
Also like Tarantino said, there is very few movie stars left. Churning countless Marvel roles doesnt make you a movie star. That makes you that guy/women who played that superhero in that franchise. Movie stars salary still makes more sense than the millions paid to studio execs.
final edit. OMG! 🤦♂Actor salaries arent killing the mid-budget movies! Studios have been doing that by funneling most the production money to massive productions where the actor salaries are just a minor cost of the overall budget. Studios want to make billions per movie and in their heads mid-budget movies dont do that. Spectacle does.

I like the video but I think we should stop using the word narcissist to mean egocentric because of the harm it is doing to people with Narcissistic personality disorder who have been especially demonized recently due to the way pop psychology has portrayed it.
A lot of them do act like demons, sadly due to the severity it can be.

Finally please try and consider where this idea comes from. I feel the same way about movies for the most part. I do understand the attempt to reboot The Wolfman and Dracula again though. Universal is about to build a big ass theme park extension that's devoted to their classic movie monsters, so they are locked in on trying to make those monsters have a cinema comeback. Although, I would prefer if they tried Frankenstein's monster. You have a lot of tech bro freaks who fantasize immortality but would want to test all the means on poor/disabled people, and a lot of hyper conservatives who are obsessed with complete control of people they deem less than them, so you could make a messed up variation of Frankenstein's monster based on a combination of those themes alone.
I would actually go to cinemas more often if they chose more experimental stories and actors no one's heard of that are very good. Especially actors that look more ordinary and less dolled up. I mean, I started getting into local theater productions again for those exact reasons. Also, design movie theaters where half of the rooms are for watching movies quietly and half the theaters are for riffing and active audience participation. Pretty much the only movie going experiences I bother with anymore are horror movies and I make a point to only go to theaters where I know the audience is very chatty. That combination has always been some of my best movie going experiences.
