It is hard to go back to controller after being into PC games for so long, but man it was fun at the time. staying up late at night playing Arena. i remember you could spectate, and id end up falling asleep watching spectate
As much as I love Quake Arena Arcade, I wish we could get this version of Quake Arena in modern systems. I got to play it on the PS2 when I was a kid and was addicitive!
Really wish Nightdive would remaster Quake 3. I think they could easily make Revolutions campaign part of the main game I'll be it by sticking to the original gun roster for the sake of balance. Getting the rights to use Revolution's additions shouldn't be hard. Quake 1&2 expansions were done by other companies. Quake 2's The Reckoning was done by Xatrix, later absorbed by Activision and we still got that expansion in the remaster. Quake 3 deserves the love and also fingers cross that we can get Machine games to add some new maps or characters.
THANK YOU FOR ENJOYING THE N64 CONTROLLER FOR FPS GAMES!!!! People think i'm CRAZY but the analog stick + shoulder hold targeting makes absolute sense.
I think with this video it suggests an amazing approach, a Quake 3 remaster (made by Nightdive/Machine games) that mixes all of Quake 3 content : Quake 3 Revolution singleplayer, Quake 3 Dreamcast extra content and a base game of Quake 3 that can switch with Quake Live options and settings to keep the community together, with this the singleplayer aspect is covered and Quake 3 can get an amazing resurgence and preservation! Nice job Ruby! best wishes for you!
Despite me being on console for most of my gaming life, I never really liked playing shooters all too much. It wasn't until I played BotW for the first time in 2019 where I experienced gyro aiming and it just clicking with me. I didn't realized I hated stick aiming until that moment and I haven't looked back since. I view the control and its playstyle similar to keyboard only controls that doom and marathon offered. as for this port it seems cool and I like the hud more then pc quake 3.
You’re gonna be pleasantly surprised when you play the Slave Driver version of PowerSlave. That game is a shining example of remaking a PC FPS for consoles. I haven’t played it with a controller it was designed for, but just from my own experience playing the remaster I can feel how controller friendly it truly is. The level design and game mechanics really stand out as custom-tailored for consoles with a world map, solid platforming, and metroidvania elements in 1996! That was half a year after Mario 64 and four months before Symphony of the Night! I still love the Build version, though, as it has its own cool ideas. Gosh, both versions are great, but comparing them is like night and day. …I got a bit off topic didn’t I? Great video as usual. I’ll have to pick up a copy of Revolution for myself as they are fairly cheap nowadays.
I feel like you may get something out of the Unreal Championship games on Xbox, which is a more developed take on a single player focused arena shooter for console. It adds a bunch of unique cutscenes and mechanics, such as melee attacks and special moves that provide an alternative to guns and help address the issue of respawning and being underpowered by allowing for incoming shots to be blocked and increasing mobility without requiring execution heavy stuff like bunny hopping. It does however get rid of the weapon variety in favour of load outs that use generic ammunition of several different types, which makes for a less nuanced overall metagame due to you only getting the weapons you favour instead of weapon locations being tied to the level design in a more curated manner that requires a bit more planning. I'd have liked the melee and mobility options to have been included with no deductions or streamlining of the ranged game, personally.
@@RubyRangerr also came to the comments to say you should check out Unreal Championship 2, game is quite a bit its own thing. You can reflect projectiles in it with the melee weapon and get the Mortal Kombat announcer to go, "Rejected!" as you kill someone with their own Instagib shot. Game was only on the original Xbox though, never got ported to any other platform.
Turns out aiming well with a controller has a lot to it. A couple videos I've watched said there are games just to test your aim with dual sticks (they have you aim and shoot at spheres that are displayed all over your screen) and you need to use these warm up your hands and fingers. Also aiming higher up on the screen is better (in a lot of your footage you're mostly looking towards the ground). There are different grips to use on the controllers and better ways of flicking the sticks to make aiming accurate.
Didn't know there even was a console port of Q3A. This looks pretty cool! Also: the 64 did have some weirdly great shooters on it. Kinda sad that when dual analogue came on the scene it completely killed single-analogue style experiences.
