Hi Moe. Was just telling the GF about all your creative original talents after you left a comment on...and then you posted this. When I built the house in 2007 put the kitchen and living room on the second floor. We talked many times about building what you have there. Many good ideas there. Thank you for sharing this info. So neat to see your place. Makes me miss my lake house. Built a boat lift there. Used a Leach company worm drive barn cleaner gear box (I was told but maybe even for a winch?) Found that a a tractor salvage yard. Never knew Leach co was into such but had big letters on the covers. Made similar cable drums like your setup. Got a smile about the brisket. Jackie always have relation bring one up when they come from Texas to Wis. She immediately asked where you were from! She likes doing them too. Had a get together last summer in the shed. Invite friends. Fun time, good food. Thanks again for showing this helpful video!
Brilliant! We'd want this for a senior dog. This dumbwaiter is so incredibly smart 🙃. Loved the very end of this vid too...jumping into the water looked like such a blast. Thank you so much for sharing this! 🙌
I know its kind of late but I just found this video. Great documentation. Ive been planning to use a boat lift mechanism on my own build and its good to see someone else has already done it. BTW the motor pulley has been changed out from the original size. Looks like they at least doubled it to make the elevator go faster. That will have (halved?) reduced the rated capacity on the plate but should still be way over capable of any load that you may likely put on it. Any comments on how it has held up over the years from when you first published this video?
Kind of a unique set up, that's for sure. The whole winch assembly doesn't look capable of supporting the weight of a human being. It also needs a lot of lubrication by the sound of things.
The whole thing looked kind of sketchy. The winch mechanism is supposed to be able to pick up a boat and is the same unit that was actually out on the boat dock. Off the top of my head I think the unit was rated for 1,500 lb but I don't recall.
The great thing about that lift is it's simplicity, bugger all to go wrong lol. Also no dam computers to cause problems. A bit of adjustment and lubing should keep it going, better than carrying heavy stuff up the stairs :-D
I suppose there is one circuit for up and one circuit for down, so you can use two different "sensors" to open the circuits when it bottoms/tops out? Trying to figure out the basics before buying anything. Thinking about using a garage door opener with a fixed length, if I can find one powerful enough.
With the bad shape my body is in these days, you dam betcha I'd use it ! Even if it failed with me in it I doubt it could mess me up any more than I already am ! 😊 When I have to stay in a motel I insist on being on the FIRST FLOOR, hate stairs ! My mouth sure is watering thinking about that brisket, mmmmmmmm !! Thanks for sharing and take care. 👍
We will be installing something similar at my father's house. He lost both of his legs earlier this year and his house is raised as well. It is impossible for him to get inside unless I am there to push him up makeshift ramps. Thanks for Sharing mate, it's given me a few ideas.
I've always liked your show, but bein a fellow Texan as well just seems to make it better. Especially when you throw in the fact that you're also smokin brisket!
Out there on the st. Johns River in Florida here where my mom lives they got the same set up on their boat dock out there he's got his boat out there right now but the river Rises and Falls we has a floating dock as well along side of it the practice pontoon boat out there too it's pretty neat how you see things like that there in Texas
mmm, brisket :-) I had to chuckle at the casual "We'll go check that out." though... Just make yourself to home ! lol I was thinking at that point this was a job for a customer and you could be in trouble messing with the brisket. When you did check it out I figured it's gotta be a real good friend, family, or your own lakeside retreat :-) Cool little dumb-waiter. I have to imagine a few people have ridden it ;-)
Yeah that's definitely not ready for people that's for a boat usually there's like that's a for belts that hold the boat in place could have been made for a jetski as well that's pretty damn neat I clicked on it cuz I saw you have it cuz I'm subscribed to you and it popped up on my phone you're pretty clever of the kinds of things you get into... I've learned a lot from you I like doing that kind of thing.. got to be a jack of all trades...
That's a very interesting thought. I've seen winch lines run cables through smaller pulley snatch blocks and never really have any issues. After repeated used though the cable can get stressed to the point is wants to stay in a tight coil and no longer move freely in the opposite direction. In this case I would think it would simply twist 180 degrees and roll the way it wanted to over the pulley. This takes a lot of force though and doubt were getting anywhere close to that with this setup. This cable is resilient stuff and it only ever seams to fail if it gets cut by rubbing on a sharp edge.
Do you have a link to the mag broom that you made? Just did my roof and probably have a hundred thousand nails lying on the ground that i need to get up. Thanks mo!
You need to visit some abandoned water park and get yourself a big slide and go from house to water in a second or so that would wake you up in the morning😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎
A porch lift doesn't lift anywhere high enough. But that doesn't matter as this is a dumbwaiter and safe doesn't really come into play with a device not designed to lift humans.
Large elevator counterweights I believe only match the weight of the empty car. For such a small elevator like this a counter weight would be a hindrance. It probably weighs in at 75lbs vs a 1000lb elevator car in a building.

Beats the hell out of climbing up and down all those stairs !
Especially with a flat or two of water.

I wish this was my place. This is my Brother's home.
After a thorough going thru and repair, I’d ride it.
That’s a beautiful place, have fun. Happy grillin!
I'm glad you liked it. Thanks.
You don't even know how long I've wanted an elevator for our deck. Well as you clarify, a dumwaiter. For bringing stuff into the house easier.
It makes moving heavy items a lot nicer.
I agree I like seeing other people's ideas. Great idea!!! That Smoked meat with that smoked crust looked amazing
Thanks. The brisket was good.

I Like it, you need to add a fireman's pole for going down quick.
Everything good starts out on a bar napkin!
Except for the AMC gremlin
Henry Ford and Thomas Edison drew the first engine starter motor on a dinner napkin.
I guess Edison had a had that got hit in the :jaw from a hand crank start when it backfired and died a few months later from infection.
Damn is that your new place. A whole tour is in order looks amazing!
It's my Brothers new house. I just get to enjoy all the amenities.
Thats a pretty ingenious solution for an elevator.
It's one of the better "home made" designs I've seen.
That's pretty darned ingenious, thanks Moe!

Last year it was rebuilt with steel. The lifting mechanism was kept the same. The wood beams had warped over the years (10ish)
Can this be moved with hand power? Looking to build an outdoor elevator to an off the grid bird blind tower . This will provide access to wheelchairs
Improve it, make it safe. You are going to get old some day and you'll be glad it's ready for you. Always great videos! Thanks!

Very true. Let's see a 20yr old computer do anything but give grief. Something beautiful about mechanical simplicity.

Going to have a weight capacity limit on that thing I'm sure you have to figure it up by body weight or grocery weight

Brisket, not biscuit, unless they were on the dinner table. :-)
I didn't catch your auto correct when I first read it. I need to make some Brisket Biscuit sandwiches.

Boat dock elevator WOW
What do you think about the cable being flexed one way by the pulley and then the opposite way by the winding mechanism on two of the four lines?
That's a very interesting thought. I've seen winch lines run cables through smaller pulley snatch blocks and never really have any issues. After repeated used though the cable can get stressed to the point is wants to stay in a tight coil and no longer move freely in the opposite direction. With the way my knees are there is no way I could go up and down all those stairs.
This definitely saves the knees when you need to carry an arm full of groceries/water.
I wonder if the cable being one piece is not like a chinese windlass where if the gear box failed it wouldn't fall?
The platform wouldn't fall because cables on each side unwind in opposite rotation.
@@anthonythorp7291 that is what a chinese windlass is
@@neiljensen9585 I see, thank you for clarifying. Still wouldn't need to be one piece and would add a hair more safety.
@@anthonythorp7291 I think you are correct,I made a mockup trying to build a lift in my shop I may try a version like this but with seperate cables

I don't think I'd like to have a deck that far off the ground. Just looking over the side makes my stomach queasy...
They make safe porch lifts with broken cable safteys if you can afforde a lake house you can afforde something safer.
A porch lift doesn't lift anywhere high enough. But that doesn't matter as this is a dumbwaiter and safe doesn't really come into play with a device not designed to lift humans.
