Converting a Log Splitter into a Forging Press, Part 1

- We are always looking to build tools on a budget, and we are in need of a forging press. The logical thing to do was to spend about $200 in equipment and materials, and build a press out of a log splitter. More to come!
We bought our log splitter at a local auction, but similar ones can be found online.

Must be at least a dozen vids showing similar builds. Yours is no better or worse but its your build so a little different ! I watch them all and pick the good and bad so when I an ready to build I get the best of everyones ideas! Thanks for sharing!

It definitely did a faster job than just hand forging. I always wanted to try to make one of this, since i have a really small workshop and it would be just enough powerful for the knives i make, thanks for sharing!
Of course! I highly recommend making one of these, as it's really the most affordable way to get into pressing. Check out part 2 if you haven't already, as it makes quick work of hot steel!

I've been wanting to build one of these from a cheap 5-8 ton log splitter but everyone keeps telling me that I need at least a 20-30 ton and where I definitely can see that 20-30 ton would be the best I however can't afford one that big but I can afford one like that one. I think it'll do the job for what I need it for. Thanks for sharing your build and demonstration of it. You definitely earned my subscription and like. I'll check out some more of your videos. Keep up the good work.

I was wondering if it could work, if you don't have a log splitter, using chizzle, air chizzle or electric jackhammer would work awesome I think

I've got their 12 ton hydraulic press..I never use.. I'm thinking can I combine it with this log splitter and make it horizontal and beefier..

What size tube is that?

What tubing did you use for the posts? Also how did you make the dies?
We used 2 inch square tube. I don't recall how thick the wall is, but roughly 1/4 inch. We made the dies by cutting square bar and welding them to a small steel plate. The dies were also sanded with a belt sander to remove any sharp edges.
Get your steel hotter and it’ll work even better!
hey i dont know if youll see my comment but i tried modifying my logsplitter to work like a press it worked great for two weeks eventually it busted and now it wont start i got all new wires and a new circuit breaker but ro no avail can you help me
What exactly happened? Without knowing more about the problem we can't help much, did the motor just stop spinning? First step is to figure out which part actually broke.
What tonnage splitter did you use?

I did a conversion with a 20 ton gas to electric and a 7 ton gas to electric
The 7 to. Gas to electric had a 3gpm pump it came with stock and now has a 16gpm waiting on a bigger motor now
I also just enjoy the builds more than anything
I'm with you! It was an enjoyable experience to build this press. However, we are ready for an upgrade, and we just began a series on our channel on building a 24 ton press 👍🏼

I have a feeling you’re going to burn that poor motor out by constantly turning it on and off. Ideally the motor would actually be running all the time and only press when you actuate the lever.
The problem is that the press doesn't retract when the motor is running. It only retracts when both the motor is off and the hydraulic lever is released. But no worries! Later this summer, our 24 ton press build will operate properly as you've described it. 😉

Electric, 220v
Make the gap smaller. Possibly a heavy return spring if it will freely return when the lever is released.
