I was hoping to meet you this year at Quad State but you were busy when I got to your table so didn’t want to interrupt. You’re way taller than I thought in person! So much cool stuff to purchase at your set up!
"They are not just big squishy things or big smashey things, they are tools." A quote that will be remembered and echoed for eternity, like those of DaVinci and Socrates.
about avoiding the press sucking out too much heat.. clamp down a hot piece of steel in the dies and let it sit there while you heat up your work.. that way when its time to work, the dies won't draw out as much heat
Thanks for the video. This was a great overview for a newbie. I'll have to look back in your videos and see if you provide any oversight to the build of your hammer and press.
Hi late getting into hot forging did cold forging most of my young life but as I am developing carpletunnel I am looking for the right tool to offset hand hammering when having to hand hammer for long periods of time I am fairly new to it but again did a lot of manual labor in life so body at what it used to be this has always been a passion and now I have the money to start any advise would be awesome
+forge52100 yep definitely enjoy having both in the shop. They are both great perspective tools :-) thank you for taking the time to watch and comment God bless
I’m making a small press soon. It’s nowhere near as strong as yours but it suits my needs. 6 ton press for drawing out billets and bars. Love both though
Great video thank you for the explanation! Slightly off topic but I have the same Mankel forge and was wondering do you have the 3rd port plugged or just the psi dialed back?
I know nothing about smithing, but on that power hammer, wouldn't it make more sense for the base platform to be a little larger than the hammer head coming down?
Thank you for doing this type of video. Is really like to see more pros and cons. I live in a neighborhood close together houses. So I’m leaning towards a press cause of the noise. Hydraulics can be loud too. But I’m sure a power hammer would be louder in the long run. I think.
+s@m_nijholt will do and thank you for taking the time to watch all these videos :-) God bless you today and whatever you get yourself into as long as it's legal LOL
+Curtis McPherson I currently do not sell plans for this press. This was my first time making a press and so therefore there is a lot of things I would change before I put it in plan phase. I'm planning on creating plans for this press or one very similar by fall of next year so stay tuned I guess :-) thanks for watching God bless you today
+eviltwinx thanks man! I think it'll be a pretty cool comparison video series. Hopefully it will help Smith's figure out what type of equipment will work best for them :-)
Lou Fazio - the control mechanism is connected to a large foot pedal that you have to use to operate them. Check out some other build videos and you see...
+grayem pepper thank you very much I'm starting to enjoy some of the voicing over as it helps me save my voice in the shop trying to talk over equipment running :-)
Another thing to mention is the fact that power hammers one has and presses one has may not even be directly comparable to pressure/ force to have an accurate comparison in forging time. A 25lb little giant hammer may not be very reasonably comparable to a 50 ton press.
+Paul Wharton you are very welcome thank you for taking the time to watch the video! The next video in the series will hopefully be coming out tomorrow :-)
I've been noticing that there is a lot of people using the press for forge welding would that be better then power hammer? maybe you can do a video comparing the 2.
+bucksmith88 I definitely plan on making that type of comparison video in the future. The one coming out next is the differences between the two drawling out material.
I've used both for 30 years. I mostly used the PH until my elbows were shot. The PH was faster for some operations and not as loud. But for punching and die work the Hydraulics are best, but for drawing billets slower. Now I'm 60 and just can't take the shock of the PH.
I think I have a good idea for a press with a car jack There would be a (cordless) drill mounted to the Jack. The only problem would be to put the drill in reverse mode. I thought about an electric motor with a little circuit in it and a pedal from a sewing machine but that would probably a bit to high-tech for me🤷
So essentially powerhammer introduced heat back into the billet, is more precise. Really expensive and specialised. Build / buy a press first then a powerhammer. Thanks
I don’t think any of them Won. The hydraulic Forge would help you get started and set, especially if using multiple layers. And a hammer forged would help you the rest of the way. I think I’ll have to build both.Because they have two distinct jobs. I’ll build the power hammer first. Thank you for the video.
I liked the video as soon as I saw "Christ centered Ironeorks". I don't usually look at the name of the channel unless I enjoy the video enough to "like" it so I had no idea that was your channels name until I started writing this comment. Keep on keeping on, God bless!
Hi nice video. To be onest this power hammer od relatively small. My power hammer is from old times 1958, simular to this russian. Theo hammer is 80kg and IT hits 50-80 times stronger. In a free timer i can sens you my video with such a metal dice. IT can be comperable to yours press. Metal squising by hammer is much beter. The metal have more spreded and dense structure. Specialy whan you have goodbye quality steel.

#RideLife I’m just about to make a press. I’ll keep this in mind!
Thanks for the video. This was a great overview for a newbie. I'll have to look back in your videos and see if you provide any oversight to the build of your hammer and press.
Do you have a video on making the press ? I’m trying to learn how to blacksmith and would like to make my own . Thanks
Thanks for this!

Press and hammer is complimentary to each other. What one is good at the other not so much. Like having both.
+forge52100 yep definitely enjoy having both in the shop. They are both great perspective tools :-) thank you for taking the time to watch and comment God bless
Where are places for good priced presses?
this really helped me decide what i need first
I'm glad it helped :-)
Thanks for that I’ve been thinking about a build for one of those real soon
How did you make this hydraulic press?
I’m making a small press soon. It’s nowhere near as strong as yours but it suits my needs. 6 ton press for drawing out billets and bars. Love both though
Can you please tell me is hydraulic press or power hammer better
Thank you for the tips
Great video thank you for the explanation! Slightly off topic but I have the same Mankel forge and was wondering do you have the 3rd port plugged or just the psi dialed back?
I know nothing about smithing, but on that power hammer, wouldn't it make more sense for the base platform to be a little larger than the hammer head coming down?
I could be mistaken but I think he said as much.
Thank you for doing this type of video. Is really like to see more pros and cons. I live in a neighborhood close together houses. So I’m leaning towards a press cause of the noise. Hydraulics can be loud too. But I’m sure a power hammer would be louder in the long run. I think.
hey Roy I was wondering where you got that press from and if you built it can u make a vid on it, or link pdfs if there are any thanks.
Very interesting. I have been wondering about this for a few weeks now.
Do you have a video or photo of this hydraulic press?
I built a press smaller than this and I like it because it's much more calmer than any other thing.
I'm curios: what are the power ratings on the motors for the two machines in this video?
Thanks Roy. How about some info on that press you built? Looks interesting, have a blessed day bro
+Joe Gregory I may do a walk-around of it in the future. Thank you for taking the time to watch and God bless you today and the rest of this week
That was very cooooool. Very imformative. Thanks
+Dennis Towns you are very welcome I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Thank you for taking the time to watch God bless
So are the plans for the press on your website? Because I can't find em..
+s@m_nijholt thank you for the great question and watching the video. I will not have plans available for a press until sometime next fall.
Christ Centered Ironworks alright thanks for the response. Keep doing what your doing man!
+s@m_nijholt will do and thank you for taking the time to watch all these videos :-) God bless you today and whatever you get yourself into as long as it's legal LOL
Christ Centered Ironworks thanks that won't be a problem unless blacksmithing is illegal lol
Looking forward to seeing the plans as well! Loving the videos
Vary good comparison.
I just built a 50 pound Hammer should have done a press first do u sell the plans for that press set up
+Curtis McPherson I currently do not sell plans for this press. This was my first time making a press and so therefore there is a lot of things I would change before I put it in plan phase. I'm planning on creating plans for this press or one very similar by fall of next year so stay tuned I guess :-) thanks for watching God bless you today
What hp motor is your power hammer? Thanks
Would be good if you told what tonnage for each machine and what differences you could get having higher or lower tonnage on either of them. Thanks!!
thank you for the video and chat...
Very interesting comparison! Thank you!
Volker
Pretty cool! I don't think I've ever seen a comparison video before.
+eviltwinx thanks man! I think it'll be a pretty cool comparison video series. Hopefully it will help Smith's figure out what type of equipment will work best for them :-)
Fantastic job
How do these things get such usable control of the gap distance?
Lou Fazio - the control mechanism is connected to a large foot pedal that you have to use to operate them. Check out some other build videos and you see...
Eric K Ahh, thanks. That isn't often shown. This tells enough that there is some sort of on-the-fly adjustment.
I think an extensive video o. How you built your power hammer and press would benefit us guys out there that also don't have enough money to buy them
straight up "tooken" bro.. haha nice video man!
i want a press now lol big dog forge made one from a log splitter that works well great way of explaining and great voice over
+grayem pepper thank you very much I'm starting to enjoy some of the voicing over as it helps me save my voice in the shop trying to talk over equipment running :-)
Boy that angle grinder took a while at the start what type of cutoff wheel were you using
Nice video, but it would help if you named your playlists more intuitively. I can't find the other video☺
Another thing to mention is the fact that power hammers one has and presses one has may not even be directly comparable to pressure/ force to have an accurate comparison in forging time. A 25lb little giant hammer may not be very reasonably comparable to a 50 ton press.
Thanks Roy, I am looking forward to further videos on this subject. I really appreciate how you are explaining the pros and cons of each machine.
+Paul Wharton you are very welcome thank you for taking the time to watch the video! The next video in the series will hopefully be coming out tomorrow :-)
Seems like there is more control with the P. Hammer than the H. Press because it would be easier to go too far with the press.
Induction coil the dies I draw out 1 inch stock 45 inches in one heat. I use a mot grounded.
I've been noticing that there is a lot of people using the press for forge welding would that be better then power hammer? maybe you can do a video comparing the 2.

This interesting. I wouldn’t have considered the shock generated by a PH
I think I have a good idea for a press with a car jack
There would be a (cordless) drill mounted to the Jack.

Rostissiere motor. Slow and powerful. Don't know if they reverse, good luck.
I have made several power hammers ,and i find power hammers are easier to make from scrap than presses
So essentially powerhammer introduced heat back into the billet, is more precise. Really expensive and specialised.
Build / buy a press first then a powerhammer. Thanks
Hello brother show us this hydraulic press
+MARCELINO BATISTA I just might in the future! Thanks for taking the time to watch
The major difference is loss of heat!
With the press the work piece is in touch with a the pressing bodies longer than in the hammering process.
You need both. Buy a power hammer and build your own press from a 25 ton log splitter. And there ya go! 😁
Power hammer shaking the World.
Do you have plans for your power hammer?
Yes they are at my website listed in the description :-)
so get both ok
I don’t think any of them Won. The hydraulic Forge would help you get started and set, especially if using multiple layers. And a hammer forged would help you the rest of the way. I think I’ll have to build both.Because they have two distinct jobs. I’ll build the power hammer first. Thank you for the video.
You have video showing your hydraulic press better.
oh thank god, I didn't know power hammers or presses are tools!
+MrChittyChad glad I could educate you :-)
I say press imo it's just so much easier takes a bit longer but not as wild and out of control as a hammer slow is steady steady ud fast
I liked the video as soon as I saw "Christ centered Ironeorks". I don't usually look at the name of the channel unless I enjoy the video enough to "like" it so I had no idea that was your channels name until I started writing this comment. Keep on keeping on, God bless!
👍
First rule of building a press is get comfortable with math. Or have a friend who is.
only 35 pund power hammer
They are completely different tools for completely different jobs.
Algum brasileiro assistindo?

"squishy things or smashy things" are you your real? I'm pretty sure anyone watching this knows the general difference
Can you make some jesus nails.
I don't need the lecture at beginning
Totally turned me off
