Its funny seeing negative nancies in the comments complaining about this not being Glorfindel, like it was in the book when this was the scene that made me fall in love with The Lord of the Rings in the first place. Its sad, beautiful, terrifying and mythical. Just think of it from Frodo's perspective. All he wanted was just to do the right thing, but now evil is closing in on his friends from all sides. He's has been stabbed. He's been poisoned. He's dying. The end is near... But then an angel appears. She speaks a language he doesn't know. She tells him everything will be alright. There are so many scenes in this trilogy that make me cry without fail, and this was the first one. I would not have wept in the cinema as a kid, if this was some random male Elf. The fact that its the love of Aragorn's life who comes to help him and complete his mission is what *makes* this scene.

    • @hindsightpov4218
      @hindsightpov4218 4 ปีที่แล้ว +35

Glorfindel comes and goes quickly in the books. He barely makes an impression in the story. You can get away with a sweeping character like that on the page, but it would not translate on the screen.
Even in the Ralph Bakshi animated film of Lord of the Rings, they replaced Glorfindel with Legolas in this scene. To have Arwen come to Frodo’s rescue and bring him to Rivendell, her home, to be healed by her father, Elrond, it made a lot more sense.

For me glorfindel would be better. We see enough of Arwen already, I'd like to see Glorfindel. In the book, Glorfindel arrives and meanwhile Arwen is in Lothlorien. I think this is ridiculous, they only show her because she is Aragorn's lover. Likewise, they show less of Legolas' scenes just for this reason. So they skipped Legolas' scenes in Lothlorien and his conversation with Frodo. Still my best and favorite movie series

In the books, it was Glorfindel the one who came in aid of Frodo, not Arwen. And since Frodo was able now to see the “unseen”, he saw the true form of Glorfindel, the had the Ligh of Valinor. But because Peter Jackson didn't add Glorfindel to the movies, he put some of the aspects of Glorfindel into Arwen (the light that Frodo can see) to build the relationship between Aragorn and Arwen.
I'm still waiting on a movie or series in which we get a proper introduction to Glorfindel. Like when the Witch King flee once he saw Glorfindel, or watch him fight with a Balrog.

I agree with you. There is really a big problem in the books in terms of the development of the love story between Aragorn and Arwen.
I read the book for the first time in 2000. When Aragorn got married with Arwen, I basically had no idea who Arwen was. Last year I downloaded a PDF copy of the books and found out that she is almost not mentioned after the Council of Elrond episode.
When the movies were released, I was not happy to see Arwen carrying Frodo to Rivendel. However, Lyv Tyler did a perfect job. She is beautiful, feminine, wise and brave.
She even spoke in Elvish to the fans a few times. She is the opposite to Morfydd Clark portrayal of Galadriel.

@@diollinebranderson6553 I am talking about Eowyn in combat. Yeah I know Beren and Luthien she went to Morgoth's palace and put them to sleep with her voice but I was talking about being able to ride and wield a sword like men. Arwen in the movie was expanded to save Frodo and attempt to duel the Nazgul even though this never happened in the book because women were not expected to do such stuff

stfu! if it was given to others they would have been corrupted. there weren’t many beings capable of resisting the influence of the ring.

In the books Frodo wasn't nearly as useless. But in the films they really did him dirty! I love these movies so much but there are some Frodo scenes that I still struggle with. Sam was the real MVP. The Ring would never have been destroyed if it weren't for Sam.

Frodo was a hero. He risked his life to get the ring to Mount Doom.

No it takes lot of strength to refrain rings temptation..Frodo was the only one who could do that for a long time. Sam almost fell for the ring at citith ungol until Frodo snatched it from his hand.

I've never heard why PJ chose to switch out Arwen for Glorfindel at the Ford. Anyone know? I've always been disappointed. Watching this clip today I realied for the first time that PJ stole the name of Glorfindel's horse as well as the scene from him.

@@shannong5074 to be fair the ONLY woman important to the plot in the books is Galadriel, which is why i thought the fandoms reaction to Tauriel was ironic because Arwen is the Tauriel of LOTR yet she's so celebrated by the "true" fans

@@shannong5074 That's ironic 'cause in the other movies, Arwen is not anymore the badass woman character she is in the first but only a crying damsel. It's Eowyn who becomes the badass woman character.

From my understanding, it was because he had no role beyond this, so he was replaced with Arwen for filmmaking purposes.

Bro, not Sam making jokes as Frodo's bout to become a wraith.
I understand that he's trying to make light of the situation, but at least get some elms that can relieve the pain like I- 🗿
Edit: I know he does get some weed to help Frodo, but he should've known sooner since he is a botanist.
