Netflix is a discretionary purchase, and increasing their prices while not offering a better service, at a time when people are struggling with a cost of living increase is a ridiculous move.

Yea I'm not paying more for a service at a time when there's less unseen content on it than ever before, and more competition as well. With the increasing cost of everything we now rotate between services, one at a time, depending on what looks good for a given month or season... no more perpetual subscriptions of ANY kind.

When Netflix was the only streaming service and they were putting out decent in-house content for a reasonable price, they were essential for much of content we wanted to watch. Now they've got competition left right and centre, the quality of their output has dropped off, it's more expensive, and the content we want is split across so many different streaming services and platforms that the only way to get what we actually want without breaking the bank is subscription hopping. And people can't be bothered to do that. Sailing the seven seas is actually more convenient, never mind cheaper.

I think all the companies trying to get their own streaming services is only going to come back and bite them in the ass. People don't want to subscribe to 4 different crap and are not going to pay for a service just for 1 or 2 shows. That was the cool thing in Netflix, they had pretty much everything, old and new.
I think eventually the market will reset and we will some sort of bundling appear, because this is unsustainable. It's like we would have to pay for each channel separately in cable

@@peugas13 I might even consider going to 3 over doing cable, since broadcast television has also improved considerably, but 4 is pushing it.
The worst part is there are even more than 4. It would actually be cheaper to just wait and buy the damn boxsets and build your own media center PC to put them on than to get even half the the streaming services out there.

@@peugas13 Wonder if eventually all the big tv and movie studious will get together and create a central gateway or global hub to watch all their content, away from netflix youtube etc. This could be quite cool and even better if the hub was inventive and easy to browse through (perhaps 3D in nature) but also it would be better if the gateway hub wasn't owned by anyone or commercial in any way but rather seen as a utility. I see all this as feasible now as the tech is there and tv seems to be dying slowly, this could be what saves them.

How naive the "I don't need to buy DVD's or pirate movies anymore, everything is on Netflix and I can watch it whenever I want" people were. Now you have to spend an hour perusing the five different streaming services you pay for just to find that if you want to find the movie you want to watch you need a VPN to access other countries versions of the platforms. Nothing beats your own personally curated collection of physical media. And if you don't have the money to buy Blurays or whatever, the seven seas are waiting and sailing them is actually not as inconvenient as the process I just described.

    Three factors contributed to this.
One: Multiple streaming services have kinda killed what once made it great.
Two: The amount of content they make now is complete dog shit.
Three: Jacking up prices and going after people who share passwords.

The early promise of streaming services was that it was going to give us choice again. Now... I'll be frank, there *are* still things on Netflix that I enjoy, but it keeps reminding me that my subscription fee is going towards over-produced shows about cake illusions, documentaries where ignorant people try to push under-supported hypotheses as absolute truths, dredging up old fashion brands to retroactively shame them, and deciding the second seasons of shows are the perfect time to stop trying to be entertaining and start proselytizing. And putting the ads that bring up these uncomfortable truths in the way of getting to what I actually want to watch. That's Netflix; don't get me started on my late, unlamented experiences with Disney+ and Amazon Prime.

A co-worker of mine called in ten years ago when he said streaming was going to end up just like cable. What little good content there was would be fractured across a dozen different packages, constant price hikes, etc. Streaming was already reaching market saturation in 2019, but got a nice little bump from the WuTang Sniffles. Now, not only are the lockdowns ending, but the economy is in the toilet. When people have to tighten their belts, superflous things like Netflix are the first thing to go. Of course the crappy, low quality, low effort content isn't helping. That was a problem even pre-Cuties. The woke stuff isn't responsible for the collapse, but it is certainly contributing to turn more people off.

If their original content wasn't 70% woke garbage, I probably would have kept the service, because I have no desire to pay for Paramount or Disney or any of the others. Just before I quit, I tried watching one of their documentaries. It was about lions, elephants and wild dogs. This last gets so little airtime that I was actually excited for that... right up until they gave us a "Alpha female raising her pups alone" storyline. That's not how wild dogs even work. Lions and elephants are a feminist wet dream, because you can easily skew their life habits to show the females don't need no man (even though they do, especially lions) and that the males are just lazy and violent. Wild dogs don't work that way. But forcing the agenda on two of the three species wasn't enough, they had to narrate some made up bullshit about wild dog social structure so she could be Strong Female Character. She's an effin' DOG, leave her be. But no. I gave up a few minutes in, and quit Netflix sooner than I'd planned because... well, there just wasn't anything else to see.

I've been against the shift to everything streaming ever since Netflix put Blockbuster out of business. I said back then it was a bad business model that would only result in an ever decreasing quality of entertainment. Even then it was clear that the entire thing was a scam to get people hooked on the convenience in order to secure subscriptions and then pull the rug out from under them by scrapping all the popular, expensive to license content in favor of cheap, low quality crap. The move by nearly every streaming platform to shed all outside content in favor of material they own or made 'in house' is just the inevitable extension of that. And of course when Disney or ABC gets dropped by Netflix and Hulu they naturally will move to create their own streaming services for that content because they saw how popular it was on Netflix. But the only reason it was ever popular on Netflix was because there was lots of content aggregated on one site.
So now we have dozens of streaming services that only have a couple of legacy shows each that aren't getting nearly the traffic or subscriptions that their shows did when they were all on Netflix. And as a result everyone is trying to make more and more content to try to trick people into thinking they have a large and diverse package to offer. The result of course is that we are paying more and more for less and less. Most of these services can't afford to make many quality shows or movies so its all just trash or shows with super truncated season lengths. And its hilarious when you compare modern streaming to what we used to have with Blockbuster, where you would pay 10-20 bucks a month for the ability to rent literally any show or movie, now you would have to pay upwards of $150/mo to get access to a dozen shows from different networks. But this is the world that short sighted people opted for so I have no sympathy.

As it's been pointed out by others, Netflix has hilariously failed to learn from their own history. Just like Blockbuster, who rejected the purchase of Netflix, they refuse to adapt with the times. Instead of offering better services they stand their ground, not realizing they're slowly sinking in mud. Sure, other companies make bad decisions, but they can afford it by being too big to fail. EA might release shit games that are as expensive as they aren't fun, but at this point they've garnered such a high fanbase that they could stop selling games for a decade and still go on. Disney is releasing dud after dud yet they own so much stuff that they're practically unkillable. Nintendo is very slow to adapt and has increasingly bad policies towards their consumers, but they consistently release good games.
Netflix has none of those benefits. The amount of stuff they own is small and uninteresting. They used to be big for a streaming service back when they were a novelty but today their competition is too fierce. They absolutely cannot afford to raise prices and treat their customers like garbage. Yet somehow they still think they cannot fail. They refuse to see the writing on the wall and won't take any sensible advice. They absolutely deserve to go under.

They should have been much more aggressive when they were the only game in town in terms of acquisitions - understanding the risks of new market entrants with far greater back catalogues of IP and additional service possibilities. Imo, Netflix convinced themselves they were geniuses and would supersede all others as the media brand of the 21st century in both service delivery and IP when in reality they were in the right place at the right time and prone to massive confirmation bias and first mover disadvantages. Their answers now seem to be chasing old-fashioned, 20th century glories by sponsoring art house movies and raising prices. In other words - no innovation. I wouldn’t be surprised for them to be bought out for a relative pittance in 5 years.

I can’t be bothered to buy Peacock Discovery+ Paramount+ and all these other stupid streaming services that have popped up the last couple years. The problem here is (ironically) TOO much competition.
When Netflix first came out it was unique and so it quickly became the hot new thing to the point of becoming part of popular culture as the guys said on the stream.
But now there's Amazon (although I agree with Drinker's point that it's probably benefitting mostly from being an add on to the core next day free shipping), Disney, Paramount and even more in the US. All of these "tenner per month" services add up quickly if you want to watch several different shows that are spread across the different platforms. It's too much!
The same thing happened with Sky Sports. Back in the day you paid your cash and you got every football match that was on. Then came Premier Plus which split the content for an extra charge. Then BT, Amazon etc... Again, too much if you wanted to watch all Premier league matches available.
It's no wonder that people are ditching all of these services.

    • @bighands69
      @bighands69 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I do not think the competition is the issue. If you look at those with a Netflix membership you will see that they probably have two or three other subscriptions as well.
The issue that they are facing like Prime is that their original content is trash and they simply are more interested in pushing a message at the cost of entertainment. Umbrella Academy was suppose to be Netflix next big original content but it is one of the worse shows imaginable. Stranger things has descended into trash as well even though it started out well.

The tech for cracking down on password sharing has been around since at least 2019, it was introduced at a tech conference in London. The streaming sites have been sitting on it until now, when they can’t justify raising prices and the overall quality of their content is plummeting. Once one company implements it the floodgates will open. At best this will cause piracy to skyrocket (again), or the entire streaming industry will collapse at worst.

Netflix offered a glimpse of a world where you could get all your favourite movies and tv shows on one platform but once Disney pulled their content and decided to make their own service, the show was over. Now Netflix has to churn out endless crap. It doesn't help that the way these movies and shows are marketed is basically non existent. I find myself scrolling along the list of new releases and I just have no context to decide what to watch. The fact is that trailers and reviews and ads do serve to draw people in to watch content, but that whole part of the process is gone now. I haven't heard of any of these new releases on my feed and I just have to randomly pick one and hope it is good. Inevitably it is trash. It is too bad because the industry squandered what might have been.

No single media company can produce enough good original content to make it worth paying for given different people have different interests and no one is going to like everything any of them make. At the height of Netflix it could pull in shows from all over and their content was so vast and broad it could appeal to everyone. The more you balkanise the content the less you can rely on having enough to appeal to everyone. And eventually people decide you aren't worth paying for.
Interesting aside, Star Trek predicted TV would die off around about the 2020s so could be another thing they got right...

When Netflix introduced that new price hike, it just so happened that we were in need of adjusting our budget. By then, everything worth watching had been moved to another service. All of the nostalgic reboots were a HUGE disappointment. The trouble is that since piracy is so easy, why would anyone pay for content? Sure, there’s the principle of supporting the creators of movies and shows you like, but at the end of the day, when your paycheck isn’t getting any bigger and its value continually plummets, principle kinda goes out the window.
If streaming services started offering improved functionality, “curated” content for particular niches (or at least better filtering systems), and more user interaction (star-ratings, reviews and comments all allowed and integrated), etc, then they could market themselves as a premium viewing experience.
The biggest practical downsides of piracy are that filtering through a pirated library for content you might want to see is like looking for a needle in a haystack, and their UIs are invariably shitty. Premium streaming services could provide what pirate sites can’t. Then they’d make money.

There has been a streaming crash coming for a long while now. There are too many and every studio or network wants their own, which is just impossible to afford. Everyone hated cable, but they at least gave you all the channels in one bundle. It got expensive and people jumped on the streaming bandwagon, but now it is almost the case that with internet access fees, any streaming services you buy in lieu of cable is just as expensive. Then you don't get local stuff and sports. Then you factor in that many of these "big" streamers are woke AF and people are starting to get a clue a lot of the content on them is stuff they do not support at all and it is worse than cable ever was.
I do not think the market can support more than a few of them and they will collapse. People are talking about Netflix and the big boys, but I think it is the smaller ones that will really get crushed.

I keep Amazon for the free shipping and kindle content more than the streaming, in fact if they said $60 off to remove the streaming I'd jump at it... I used it for Whole Foods delivery a few times last year, but then they changed that to $9.95 per delivery (plus driver tip) and screw that. Netflix I signed up for maybe a year ago mainly for a couple series, one vanished before I got to watching it, other content has gone away, I did find a few anime shows I enjoyed but I think I've watched most everything worth watching... Other than trying a few initial episodes of things that were obviously going woke I haven't really found anything new to watch in a couple months, and now they're raising prices *again* in May?!? Less worthwhile content for more money - shrinkflation might work at the grocery because I still have to eat, I can give up Netflix pretty easily though.

Especially with the MGM buyout, and bonuses with Amazon Prime and Twitch. There's just more content and other things to do with the sub.
And personally, I know there's a new Stargate series (TV series canon) being pitched right now, so hopefully that turns out good. I'd love to watch that.

Just watch your own expierience with:
    a) a movie you generally liked
    b) a movie you generally disliked
For a, because there is enough you like in there and nothing terrible, you gloss over some negative things. The movie "gets away with it"
For b, if theres not enough you like in there or something terrible which kills the whole expierience for you, much more of the small negative things will jump right into your eye
These streaming services are the same. They increased Prices while putting more crap on. Now theyre even talking of putting ads on for Netflix. Then theres also that "Exclusivity" hype going on. Its started as, "sign up here and you can watch 60% of what you like here for 10 bucks"
Now, for the same content you would have to sign up to 3 or 4 diffrent Streaming Services and everyone of them cost 10 - 20 bucks roughly and they crapping on their IPs. Im only schocked this didnt happen earlier.

I (probably every intelligent person) noted three years ago that people weren't going to sign up for 20 streaming services, and most of the ones were going to get weeded out evolutionarily. Hence 'The Streaming Wars'. That being said, I don't think Netflix is dying or going anywhere, it's just the bizarro late-capitalistic narrative we have to live with now where being successful isn't being successful, having an exponential profit curve is being successful, and not having one is dying. It was so nice back in the 1990s when people didn't have clickbait inserted into the way they thought yet, networks would struggle for years, and everybody just laughed about it. I can't remember, but I think it was CBS who struggled in the 90s, couldn't find their voice in primetime, then in the 2000s it was NBC. Every primetime drama and sitcom they tried just sucked, where they once had dominated with their sitcoms. And it was just like something for SNL to laugh about.
These streaming services are living in the same world as those networks. You have a perfectly sustainable company that can endure ups and downs, so long as you run it like one, and not according to some ridiculous growth chart that shows you'll have 25 billion subs by 2030.

    • @bmcfonzie

I miss the days where literally everything was produced as a hard copy and you could just take your pick. Some stuff on streaming services has been good but why do I see a point in subscribing to multiple (very expensive) to get a few exclusives and then lumbered with straight to vid bargain bin cr*p. That's all these streaming services have to offer. So in away you're much more limited than ever before on quality, unless you are insanely rich and prepared to throw money away. Also due to wokeness of everything, I wouldn't for example touch Disney with a barge pole. Just release the good stuff in cinemas and then a hard copy later like in the old days.
Edit - But yeah value and quality is severely lacking, I agree.

1)They do not have rewatchability shows...IE Friends or Office. They need mindless shows people will watch over and over again and over and over and over again.
    2) Also they produce junk with 'THE MESSAGE'
    3) They have alot stuff no one knows is out. They need a weekly host to showcase what they got and why the host loves if , as long as the reason they love it is NOT diversity. They can use their current catalog and introduce to a new audience.

At the beginning of every programme they have a list of trigger warnings in the top left corner of the screen: sex, violence, discrimination, etc. etc. It would really help me if they included an additional code: 'woke'. It sounds to me that one of the chief mistakes that Netflix made was, in a sense, not monopolizing. As much as I dislike monopoly, especially in film (hence part of my hatred for disney) Netflix made the mistake of being "one of the first" without having their own PROPER studio to back it up. By this I mean, it seems as though all the content contracts that they wrote up were from before anybody really had any idea streaming would diversify this much, they enjoyed, for quite some time, VERY little competition especially internationally, so they had films from studios like FOX, Marvel, WB etc. then they lost all of them because they didn't protect those contracts and didn't do enough work to build their own Brand in terms of films and TV...and now they're losing. It certainly seems to me that Netflix is the Archetypal Icarus story. It's also particularly entertaining that even people at Netflix had talked shit about the Blockbuster CEO for his Boomer mentality, just to fall to the same fault...which is "Not fully appreciating the gravity of new products and tech"

    Problems for streaming/film might be
1- too many services, I compared the price of seven streaming services to my cable package and it was 50-75 dollars more a month compared to the cable
2- too many shows but not enough good shows, I want to see more mind hunter but its over and done with, the alienist scratches that itch for me but season 3 is going to be in 2016 instead of 1900's like fist 2 so I'm out and that feeling/approach goes for multiple TV shows/films as good ones get gone and then if they are not gone they get super bad in due time like altered carbon really quickly with major changes being done that no one asked for
3- film/tv show story writing has take a big hit in that writing for a good story/interesting/compelling/ entertaining is now thrown away for pushing a message and thus interest in film/ tv show entertainment might be down in general overall as people just get sick of always being preached/ soap boxed too so its not fun or relaxing
4-economy is down with inflation so you gotta make some tough choices and expensive inconsistent streaming services is a want not a need
5- people are sick of bad adaptations, the bait and switch or resemblance in name only has probably pissed a lot of people off as they want to see their favorite books or characters come to life in faithful almost exact adaptations visually as they will accept change to some degree but not a lot but instead fim/tv keeps shitting all over that and it gets depressing going from hope to disappointment a lot as a fan of books

We had the explosion of streaming services, and everyone throwing anything they could at new content. We're going to have a contraction as services can't sustain themselves on a thinly spread audience. But the likely outcome is some consolidation - and I'd put money on Netflix, Disney and Prime coming out the other side. Netflix still makes a healthy profit, has a collection of unique IP and some pretty good shows, and is sufficiently "data driven" to care more about shows that do well than shows that fit an agenda. That doesn't prevent them from churning out a lot of filler, but they aren't hamstrung (like some other services) by IP that they feel obliged to exploit.
