I'm the guy that manages to spot an accident coming and slow down for it, only to get rear ended and sent into the nether. Or get the slightest tap and get meatballed while they enjoy the rest of their race
Dude I had one bad week and lost 800. I managed to keep my safety rating going and will be A this next season but it is so deflating to get beat down by other drivers. I'm going to ease my iRating back up and start league racing. Just do my MPRs each season. I would absolutely love to see official iRacing leagues we could join and still receive ratings. My best races have been hosted. Maybe one day lol. The back markers seem to always kick my ass trying to get around them. Sometimes I'll stay back but then it ends up as a train behind me so then you have to get around them or forfeit a position. Hopefully they keep advancing the rules and ratings system.
Best piece of advice is to just go out and have fun! The minute you begin to take it too seriously and overthink things you're already in the hole. Personal record is 300 lost in a day
Make sure you are aware of who is revving their engine on the starting grid, because they are definitely causing the first major pile up within the first 2 turns, lol.
I totally agree with everything. I was down to 2130 at 1st of January, the lowest I've been after coming out from rookies. I changed my approach. I did everything Matt said. Some of them consciously, some not. But in mid March I had 2920 iR. I believe that practice and know your competitors are the two most important factors. During practice, you not only improve your lap times but also learn the weakness of the car and react much much earlier before it snaps or whatever. Read your competitors. See where they are slow, see where they try to divebomb, etc. Half of the times you let a "dirty" racer get past you, you gonna get two freebies in a couple of laps. He's not gonna dnf alone. He's gonna take somebody else out as well. Don't let this be you. Stay safe, reduce your weekly races and practice practice practice!
I've been lurking for quite a while and just recently began switching my streaming to all Iracing. Your enthusiasm and talent is something to look up to and showing these young whippersnappers us older guys can race! Keep up the great work.
I work hard to make sure that when I do race that I have a great shot to win. I'm hyper-focused on my stats but man I'd really like to get to a point where I race publicly just for fun.
That's how I am with oval racing. So much so, I had to stop and race something else because iRacing wasn't fun anymore. I'm now a happy resident of iGPS. Since I'm not very good at road racing, I don't expect to win or run up front. My only goal is to finish the race without making any major mistakes. For the most part I've done just that, and managed to grab a couple wins in the process.
i watch your videos every night while im laying down for the night. nothing weird lol. just a peaceful time for me to focus. I learn from your racing lines, braking points, different levels of aggression and so on. I have gained so much knowledge, and more than anything i have learned to keep my composure. You have such a great attitude ,and sure we get upset with days like this but in the end it is all for fun. I never imagined my road lic. would be more important than my oval but you have given me something to shoot for. I cant catch you live on twitch but i do go back and watch them all. keep it classy. oh yeah woooooo
I lost 500 in one day when I first switched to GT3 VRS. The first 98 was from getting disco'd using the beta ui, the rest was me trying to make up that 98 until I decided to take a break.
This happened a ton to me the other day, the worst part was right before an accident I felt like I should slow down in case they wreck...I figured that I was good being a few tenths behind them. But I should have listened to myself, in several of the accidents I realized that I could have done more to prevent it. Some of yours were clearly unavoidable, but as I've learned as a newer racer from reddit and other online groups - sometimes you do have to look at what you could have done, or taken differently to prevent it. Or just don't put yourself in those positions. Sorry for your loss! (I'm not blaming you at all, just hoping to help others).
Hey man! Love the videos and am learning a lot. I lost about 800 iRating in one week. It was absolutely horrible lol. Just a series of getting slammed all over the tracks. I have an A safety rating again so I'm trying to safely build my iRating back up. I took a month off after that happened lol. I'm still in my first 6 months of iRacing so I'm not too upset. I'm sure it happens to a lot of noobs. Just hitting a stint of repeat bad races. Even on tracks that I am incredibly consistent at. It's not the racing next to people or passing. I've never been reported or even had someone get angry with me. It's those damn back markers that somehow get into my split. I don't get how someone that gets lapped makes into the race. I'm sure they'll refine things more as time goes on. At least I hope they do. I'd rather race my way back up and not "farm" anything though. Anyway, learning a lot and enjoying the videos man! It would definitely be pretty great if there was an official league we could race in and still gain iRating. I have had some amazing races in hosted racing. Just doesn't count for anything
Hi Matt. I ran some races with you in the past. You overtake me in one video (Nurburging in F3 -get my licence back) and i watch some of your videos and i know that you're a good and clean driver. This record is huge because i experience sometimes theses bad races in a row and sometimes i want to scream... Recently, in about 6 races, i lost more than 300 iratings too exactly because of the same kind of bad luck. In the beginning of the Season 2 of 2021, in Road America in FR2.0, i was crashed 6 times in 5 races. And the most frustating is almost nobody apologies about that. I hope for you that you'll have more clean races in the next future. Thanks for the good advices. You're right about the fact of racing the same kind of car. That's the thing i do (open wheels) and it's not working every time but when i know most of the people, it's useful to avoid some problems with some of them.
Great video. I drive the Radical. We're at Monza this week. Monza is where the Radical goes to die. I'll be starting from the back and trying to gain ground. Safety first and consistency my only goal.
You can be as careful as you want but some fight to the death even if you want to let them pass with lots of room. Some put the possibility of gaining one position over the fun of everyone around. I did only 1 race yesterday, GT4 at Barcelona and lost 0.92SR after 18x. I got wrecked 3 times when driving in a straight line on the white line 100% predictable and they decide to do rapid lane changes or moving under braking to pass each other and hit me while doing so. When I had 16x I was driving super careful, staying away from people but sometimes just have no chance at all. 2x were my fault for slight off tracks but and the other 4x were from a small bump in the back, I needed to lift because the car ahead was slower at the apex, the car behind didn't, that's ok, can happen but the rest was madness.
Matt, put the iRacing spotter in addition to the CrewChief spotter. They may talk over each other, but sometimes they give complementary information. The iRacing spotter says “go left”, “go right” and CrewChief doesn’t.
I’ve lost just over 100 irating in 1 day, every race is different racing’s so close and intense sometimes I try starting from the pits and it helps a bit but not much, I’m at 1800 trying to hit 2000 2k irating but just keep having bad luck, great video Matt I enjoy watching your videos on TH-cam, keep the videos coming dude! 🏁
Ever since I started to play chess I don't care as much about rating any more. I learned to just do my best, race competitively but also safe and I'll give up a position if the other person is all over the place. ratings will go up and down naturally just part of playing the game or any game for that matter.
After having an awful week at Road America at IMSA and Porsche cups and at the Superspeedway with the trucks, this video was helpful not only with the tips but also with realizing I wasn't alone in this lmao Sometimes these bad days happen, better days will always come
I like keep an eye on practice sessions beforehand & see who can’t finish a lap without wrecking or who’s name keeps coming up on the radio/chat for doing bonehead things and if they end up in my race split I definitely keep away from them. Surprisingly, alot of times it’s they guys who set the quick laps that I’ve found to stay away from as a lot of times they’re the ones who put in fast times when they can barely control their cars & keep it on track for a quick lap (which is usually only 1 out of the 15 laps they attempted because they crashed the other 14 times) when they’re around no one but can’t drive for crap when they have to be smooth & controlled around 20 other cars.
during those times, i'll usually drive slow for a day or two and build that confidence. but best advice, stop racing for the day once you get frustrated. that's killed me in the past
I fell into a very very low irating when i started racing and got stuck in the lowest splits, because of that i believe i lost around 500 irating in one day because my mentality was all just "1 more race and ill get back into it" or that i "had to win at all costs" which inevitably left me going for stupid moves, being constantly tired and drained when it came to racing and really left me in a low.... then i decided to just have fun and not worry if i win or lose and pretty much instantly i was in higher splits and doing much better for myself.
I lost 500 failing at VRS Sprint at Bathurst. Combination of my fault / unlucky incidents. Now bear in mind my irating at the time was only 1700. Back up to 1900 now aiming for at least 2k this season. Improving my consistency has probably had a greater impact than improving my pace (I’m working on both).
Everyone is free to do whatever you want. But with that irating it feels you went to soon to gt3. After one season pcc with the mx5 I was thinking the same (going to gt3) but then I decided to stay longer in MX-5. Now 3 weeks in my second season with the same car it really starts to feel like I’m knowing the car. Have more fun and skill then ever
1900 is nowhere close to the bottom of what people doing GT3 are at. It was a combination of factors including me being stubborn and not walking away. GT3s are not that hard to drive. It just meant I had a week or so of easier races whilst my rating recovered. I don't care about the rating enough for it to matter as long as I get a good race. If I really need to get it back quickly I would run Ferrari fixed for a night or two.
@@XanderHill101 that stubbornness is really recognizable. I sometimes still found myself in bad situations because of stubbornness. And after a bad race I used to had the need to make up for it as fast as possible. Resulting in a even worse race.
Im trying to get better . New TLCM’s are making every track like a new experience. Load cell pedals are helping a ton! Thx for the great advice & - what r u bragging about, my iRating IS 405
I’m Dutch so correct me if I’m wrong. But you have a saying ‘you will reap what you sow’. Last race with the Mazda MX-5 on oulton park I was driving in 6th position. The car behind me was closing in really fast on the last 4 laps. So I let him pas easily because he was really faster. 1 lap later he found himself almost tangled up in a crash between the number two and three. So he lost a lot of time avoiding. So I gained three places with one lap to go. :) often you got yourself to blame. Also doing less races on the same day helps. Specially when you had a good one. Stop for that day
Good advice. I usually practise at the start of the week and race at the end, races are normally cleaner then as everyone has some experience but they are usually faster. I lost about 180ir last week in 2 races same day, first one iRacing crashed on me when I rebooted my PC and re-joined iRacing I had a black flag for repairs pitted twice but couldn't clear the black flag, I was disqualified. 2nd race I screwed up all on my own.
I came on near the end of his stream yesterday....now I get the look on your face Matt...lol! Perfect advice Malone! Here is a booger back at ya...unnf!!!
I’ve lost a couple hundred in a day. I just can’t get past the 2300 iRating mark. Once you’re there your basically at the bottom of all the top splits with aliens. So frustrating
368 is probably the highest I've lost on one day. It was right after I hit my peak, and it actually started a downhill that was nearly 1000 iR and lead me to take few years off the game :D :D
"Let the good times keep rolling" Matthew Malone - 31.3.2021 My advice that Matt left out. Learn to race while...WATCHING YOUR MIRRORS. Plus practice and learn the brake lock on the racecar Before the race.
I did Skippy all last season and just started in GT3 this season. In the first 2 weeks of the season I've lost over 500 iRating. Mostly my doing. At first it was lack of pace, then it was pushing too hard resulting in rookie mistakes. Now I've been practicing more to get my pace up and I'm going to do some AI races to work on my situation awareness. I'm hoping I can claw back
I would add the following Install a third party overlay like RacelabApps or Kapps and put the SR in your relatives. Let them crazies with an SR1.x or lower 2.x by. They will crash before the race. I had one of these hit me in my last race. got a 4x for nothing. That guy finished the race in the pit with 16 incidents 🤷🏻♂️ Another thing is, when you have 15 liters left at the end of the race, put your brake balance to the front by two or three clicks. In my last race my rear locked up two laps before the end, because I forgot to change the brake bias.
Many players do not know the rules, and once they are behind somebody. 😢boom. Some drive so aggressive, and some drive so nicely this is disregarding how good they are.
hi matt i would had stop looking for speed go in endurance mode, if you setup, make it safe, not fast this way on case of spin or hit you got more chance to save it.
Mazda mx5 top split at Oran park south: great track. Not so great if you race against a guy called Bora Ciftri. He won’t leave you any room on the outside. He will just run you out of road. Great driver. And also last corner is great for divebombs. -200 IRating in 2 races that day!
What helps: First observe and learn about the other competitors. Where are they slow, where are they fast? How consistent are they? How aggressive are they? If you know these things you are also able to produce a safer situation. The most stupid and unsafe action is to drive the first lap like it is the last one of the race. Seen so many people behaving like this… this ends a lot not only losing safety but also ending up at the end of the field (at best) and losing tons of irating. Better to have +20 than having -100…. forcing yourself trying to do +100 is not a good mindset.
First 2 week of last season i went from 1800 down to nearly 1000. I then created a series for my channel on trying to get to 2k which sort of helped me focus but never really got back to where i was until last week when i hit the 1800s again. Slumps make you wonder why you bother sometimes
253 and it happened just the other day. Hit my highest iRating ever took alittle break. Came back without nearly enough practice and things went south for a few races.
Just started Iracing for the one or two good races I seem to have 3 to 4 where I get wrecked by people who don't understand racing room or are just A-Holes
I don't how much I've lost in a whole day; probably 90-100 something, but I don't typically race multiple times a day. I will say, since coming back to iRacing last year after a few years away, I've lost about 400 oval iRating. I topped out at 3800 in 2014, and now I'm floating around the 3400 mark.
My secret is let them go ….if you’re quicker you will pass them throughout the race anyway. So many idiots think they can win the race on the first lap which they can’t, but they sure can lose it!
I am loosing most irating because of crashes. I have the pace but just not able to finish races, I mean no matter how cautious just get rear ended on lap 1 I was leading a race in Porche Cup series in car 24. Got disconnected due to internet issue.
-195 iR: 1. GT3 Challenge. #19 car, started 1st, wrecked myself lap 4, finished 19th (-90 iR) 2. GT3 Challenge. #1 car, started 3rd, wrecked myself lap 3, finished 14th (-44 iR) So, I thought let's finish the day with a good race... 3. GT Sprint. #11 car, started 4th, wrecked myself lap 3, finished 23rd (-61 iR) The only good thing about these races was: I didn't take out anyone else. God knows what will happen when I make it to lap 5 without a crash. :D
I'm down to 800 iRating now due to just practicing with my new wheel. With controller I could stay at 1200. I seem to qualify at about 8th place, then get wrecked in the first 2 turns because i'm in the middle of the field. Then i'm last place just flying around the track trying to not get dead last.
I don't race that often to loose so much and the other way around. Can't gain too much. So The most I lost per week was last week of 2021s1. Around minus 300, all divebombers and lmp's.
When you stop caring about Irating the sim becomes alot better. Dont set yourself goals and you will be a lot less angry if some idiot crashes into you. It is hard sometimes but the only way to always have a satisfying experience. If Iracing makes you mad you are wasting your free time. And ofc always leave space for cars around you
-415 in a day, i've just accepted that my iR will stay low because im not better than that iR with the way i like to enjoy the game. I could stick to 1 series and grind it out for iR, but thats pointless coz i might be 500 iR more skilled in TCR than i am in a GT3 for example. This is a fantastic video for advice though, I love it.
Matt, if I’m driving down the street and I see a black cat should I drive straight over it or swerve and if I swerve will this provide more luck in iRacing?
I thought it was a good idea to race fixed GT3 at Daytona. I don't know why I thought that. -120 in one race and all I did for 5 laps was try to dodge wrecks and dive bombers.
I am happy when I lose iRating because my oponents get slower. My Races went pretty solid most of the time, so most of the time my oponents are too fast
I just scrolled thru the comments and didn’t see anyone else say how much irating they have lost in a day. I’m not sure but I’ve def lost around 300 in one day
I'm the guy that manages to spot an accident coming and slow down for it, only to get rear ended and sent into the nether. Or get the slightest tap and get meatballed while they enjoy the rest of their race
100x YES to this.

I love how you can see Matts reaction deteriorate with each crash...
I can't film myself in these occasions because i am not as cool as Matt !
One more and the neighbours will report a flying rig out of matt's home window... I bet all my turkey legs on that one

I feel your pain. Especially with a 4k ir and up, because you know it will take 5 or more good races just to get back what was lost.
I lost 436 iRating on my road license alone in one day. The common denominator in all of my wrecks was ME and until I realized that, nothing changed.
In one day I have lost 160 pts and over a bad season, over 600 iRating lost. Thanks! This must be the most relatable iRacing vid I have ever seen.

Yep - that's my day today... I was frickin raging by the time I got a 'Too much damage. We're done' in my fourth race.
If your super speedway racing then it’s not if you’ll lose irating, it’s when
Im trying to get better . New TLCM’s are making every track like a new experience. Load cell pedals are helping a ton! Thx for the great advice & - what r u bragging about, my iRating IS 405
Excellent tips
In the pits, we gather,
SR bruised, but hearts unyielding.
Rubber meets asphalt.
2nd race I screwed up all on my own.
cool vid. using thrustmaster gear also helps a lot
I came on near the end of his stream yesterday....now I get the look on your face Matt...lol! Perfect advice Malone! Here is a booger back at ya...unnf!!!
I have found the A.I. racing (when possible) has been great practice.
I hit my oval all-time high of 4207. The next day I got on and by the end of it I was back down to around 3400. To sum it up, Daytona week...
I feel your pain. My one day record is somewhere in the 200's. I recently went on a run and lost 400 irating myself. Time to build it back up.
another pointer is, don't register for a race with less than 3 minutes remaining. I've had the session not load and lost over 100 a couple times.
Race the track not the idiots. Lol. Best suggestion is to be patient. Especially with the 40 min or more races.

My advice that Matt left out.
I'm hoping I can claw back
I think it's hard going from skips to the tin tops. I also have lost iracing doing this. Hopefully will find pace again
I would add the following
Install a third party overlay like RacelabApps or Kapps and put the SR in your relatives. Let them crazies with an SR1.x or lower 2.x by. They will crash before the race.
I had one of these hit me in my last race. got a 4x for nothing. That guy finished the race in the pit with 16 incidents 🤷🏻♂️
Another thing is, when you have 15 liters left at the end of the race, put your brake balance to the front by two or three clicks. In my last race my rear locked up two laps before the end, because I forgot to change the brake bias.
Many players do not know the rules, and once they are behind somebody. 😢boom.
Some drive so aggressive, and some drive so nicely this is disregarding how good they are.
This are good tips for everyone!
Most IR lost on 1 Day was around 270
Mate the intro was so funny, glad to see it's not just me haha
hi matt i would had stop looking for speed go in endurance mode, if you setup, make it safe, not fast this way on case of spin or hit you got more chance to save it.
I just had a bad series of races and lost a lot of iR thanks for the video!
Mazda mx5 top split at Oran park south: great track. Not so great if you race against a guy called Bora Ciftri. He won’t leave you any room on the outside. He will just run you out of road. Great driver. And also last corner is great for divebombs. -200 IRating in 2 races that day!
My favorite thing now is to talk to them. Because 99.999999% of the time they truly think they do nothing wrong.
I think “comfort” would suffice instead of “comfortability”. Great vid, just my teacher genes coming out.
I am loosing most irating because of crashes. I have the pace but just not able to finish races, I mean no matter how cautious just get rear ended on lap 1
I was leading a race in Porche Cup series in car 24. Got disconnected due to internet issue.
the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result.
I lost 111 in one race the other night. #2, and was leading a Street Stock C race, got crashed on the last lap, finished last.
Great advice that aged very well
-195 iR:
1. GT3 Challenge. #19 car, started 1st, wrecked myself lap 4, finished 19th (-90 iR)
2. GT3 Challenge. #1 car, started 3rd, wrecked myself lap 3, finished 14th (-44 iR)
So, I thought let's finish the day with a good race...
3. GT Sprint. #11 car, started 4th, wrecked myself lap 3, finished 23rd (-61 iR)
The only good thing about these races was: I didn't take out anyone else. God knows what will happen when I make it to lap 5 without a crash. :D
I think me PB is 330 just on Oval and Road is 575. I love your videos and can not wait for the next video.
Matt, you think iRacing will ever be able to balance out incident point penalty distribution? Shit is frustrating lol.
personal shame day was 230 loss road and oval to get out i stuck to 1 car in each and grinded a plus 470 after 3 weeks
top drawer advice right here folks
I'm down to 800 iRating now due to just practicing with my new wheel. With controller I could stay at 1200. I seem to qualify at about 8th place, then get wrecked in the first 2 turns because i'm in the middle of the field. Then i'm last place just flying around the track trying to not get dead last.
Signed up for NiS as a 5200 iR, #1 car, PC died, finished last. -137.
And ofc always leave space for cars around you
Toughest thing, how do you deal with blinkers? I can never figure out how to race them but they slow down the entire course.
i already know how to lose irating
Im the guy to fully accelerate into a crash, thinking theres a gap.
Lost 300 and a bit in one day due to PC locking up in races for a second each time then when it recovered I found myself upside down in the barrier
I went from A to D in a week even loose in week 13?
Matt, if I’m driving down the street and I see a black cat should I drive straight over it or swerve and if I swerve will this provide more luck in iRacing?
"How about a nice game of chess?"
Man that was rough. One of those days I guess
800+ last week. Went from A SR 3.8 to C SR 1.0. I'm still not back to where I was
Never hit a competitor in my life, it was netcode every time!
Everytime I wanna build irating, I just stop racing people, and it climbs by itself cause I survived the race n got top 10
3.2 SA A class on oval to 1.5 SA and drop to B class after a day of racing talladega
The moment I bought Porsche 992 I’ve lost 250 irating in one day and I rage quit. That didn’t help either.
I thought it was a good idea to race fixed GT3 at Daytona. I don't know why I thought that. -120 in one race and all I did for 5 laps was try to dodge wrecks and dive bombers.
Awesome video.
